6.31 (1858) PARs falsely marked as downloaded

Postby rh » Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:28 pm

So I'm downloaded from a custom list. Some 500+ day old postings. The download is stuck in the list - actually 5 different ones. Expanding the post indicates all pieces downloaded, including 5 pars. No pars exists in the destination folder, only the .r?? files. I pick the last (largest) par in the list and force it to download. It actually downloads, the unrar runs and all associated downloaded files are erased - per my config. The post remains in the download list.

Checking the unrar destination reveals the download intact. So I guess what I'm saying is that the expanded post shows the pars were downloaded when they were not.

Hmm, after manually downloading the missing pieces, I just notices several .par2 files in the Override UnRAR Path. Never seen these placed here before.

I'm not really following.

Add a set to download, the small par should download and then the files. The rest of the pars will download if needed when the rars finish up. I suspect you have a file or two in the set that simply aren't finished yet. You can right click "Properties" to see the current state of the download.

All pieces were indicated as having been downloaded. The primary par file ended up in the overridden unrar path. None of the other pars were in either the download path or the overridden unrar path. Going back and forcing the par files that were missing to download did work.

I did the properties too, all files were shown as being downloaded there too. When in fact they were not. The .r?? files were all there though.

The primary par that ended up in the overridden unrar path surprised me. I've never seen that before. In the previous build, the download behaved exactly as it always had - just as you described.

Went back and grabbed a few more. First 1. Then 6. They all worked. If I can come up with any better info I'll post it. Could have been connection issues. I also recall some errors.

Speaking of errors. Why can't that dialog that offers 'hide till restart' be on a tab? I don't want to complete dismiss the errors but I hate that it pops up on top - apart from the app.

Been noticing the same, since RC4, thought it was just me.

Almost 50% of the items I downloaded in the last few days have resulted with all lines greyed out in the download list, but only the par2 file and the base files are in the download folder (missing parts are not in the recycle bin). Run autopar and it indicates parts missing. Go to binsearch find the pars and add them, and it all completes nicely. (Tried the retry option on, but it didnt do anything) Downloading from Giganews europe.

This seems to have occured since the Aggressive Assembly mode has been added, though my settings have not been changed from RC3 so might it be something associated ?

When you say "base parts" what do you mean? The rars and pars and no unrar? Just trying to get a handle on what you're seeing. Gray means Newsbin decided to assemble the files because enough time had passed with no additional downloaded data. Aggressive mode won't work for everyone. I'd be interested in knowing if it's one or not.

Might want to check in the options and disable aggressive assembly if it's on (Autopar tab).

I have a screen grab of the forum list to illustrate what I was seeing. It occurred again last night with about 7 of the 30 posts I selected for download. Forcing the pars that it thought were downloaded to download again fixed all but 2 of the 7. Those 2 really didn't have enough pieces to complete.

*edit* ok, figured out how to post it...

After a complete download, all files get marked "downloaded" even the PARS. Even if they didn't really download.

The question really is whether the files actually unrared or not. The implications are that the download completed and unrared and the only problem is that the small par got moved to the unrar folder too. By default all rars and pars deleted after an unrar.

Edit: I just noticed that the files are red. That means they're probably sitting in the failed tab and that's why you don't see them in the download folder. Might want to check the failed tab.

That's 'my' Red, not your Red. Note that I said the files in red were downloaded to their normal location.

The answer to your question is, no, the files were not actually unrared. All the .r?? files were lying in the normal place. As soon as I forced the .pars to come down, the unrar took place followed by the cleanup.

Next time it happens, check the "Properties" of the set in the download list. The question is how many valid par blocks you have. I

You know you can tell Newsbin to always download the pars now too. It's the checkbox above aggressive mode.

Ok, I'll get a capture of the properties dialog too next time.

I do have unlimited but I try to be conservative, so I've intentionally left the get all pars unchecked. Up until now, it was rare for NB to ever fail to get the pars needed and complete the download. I'm not always watching the download but I've seen it doing the repair before. So it's served me well I'm sure many times without me knowing how much work it was really doing.

The problem for me is that it always works so, cases like this require some fishing to figure out.

I get the par2 file and all the rar files but none of the repair pars. though they get greyed

Aggressive mode is off, or should I say indicated as off.

One thing that did come to mind from something your said. These are greying out in quite a short time, though have not determined how short , but definitely less than in the past, Will try to get a timing during tommorrow morning download

One factor in most of the cases when I have run quickpar, there are less than 10 blocks missing and sevral cases it was 2-4

Above Aggressive Assemble mode i have... Ok this may be a clue... "Disable Automatic PAR unpausing" ... It is ticked ! but I dont remember selecting it. Now assuming this is ticked, could newsbin assume there are no other parts it can get so trys to assemble ?

I will try with this deselected too in the morning

If it's ticked, it should be downloading all the PARS.

How many servers do you use? Is one failing many of the chunks?

I use europe as Master and US as Slave

OK got one this morning, but i don't think its related as it downloaded the pars, so will keep looking

Retry 4

Right click properties of file in download list
Number of source files 16
Complete files 16
Damaged files 0
Repair bloc count 186

If I right click, quick par, I see 9 mising filed but all the pars are showing. The missing files are in the download folder but where there is an "n's" in the name we have "n(? in a diamond)s" where ? in a diamond is a symbol.

Changing to "n's" and running autopar repairs. Dropping teh files without remane onto autopar and it repairs.

right click unRAR /Join Files will not work. Has to be manually unRAR'd

How about PMIng me the subject for this file. Subject and group. Sounds almost like a unicode filename issue.
