The file containing the groups list is missing

Postby Bedlam » Thu Mar 15, 2012 3:54 pm

I keep getting this error message, for the past couple months, and I can't seem to get around it.

I get the dialog, and the group list is empty, so of course, I try to download the groups list from the server, it seems like it works, no error messages in the log, but I never get new groups to update in the list. Refreshing the list does nothing.

I've been a user for years, and never had this problem. I can access the groups I have just fine, but for some reason, I can't see any groups in the master list.

Can anyone help?

Wow, I just solved this.

I went to the newsbin dir, renamed groups.db3 to groups.db3.bak, and relaunched the app, tried to add a group, re-downloaded the group list, and refreshed, and magically, it re-appeared.

I guess my groups list database got corrupted somehow.

First I'd try:

- Open the options, click "Open Data Folder".
- Close Newsbin
- Look for the file names "Groups" or "Groups.db3".
- Delete this file then try downloading the groups again.

If doesn't work.

- Exit Newsbin
- Right click the shortcut you start it with.
- Select "Run as Administrator".

Try downloading the groups again.

If the second one works, it means Newsbin can't write to the data folder probably because of permissions problems. Your choices are, always run as administrator or change the permissions of the data folder to Newsbin can write to it. You other option is to re-install from scratch.

This is a common problem when switching from say, XP to Win7 and using the same configuration you did on XP.

Edit: Simul-post.

Good job fixing it.
