Downloading headers takes forever

Postby ThePrimal » Sat Feb 25, 2012 7:06 am

I switched back to Newsbin from Newsleecher after a loooong time and like Newsbin just fine.
There is just one major problem which drives me insane:

When I update a group which has let's say 600.000 new headers it takes over an hour until the group is updated. I went through several betas with no change.
In Newsleecher this would take about a minute and I would be done. What could be the cause?

In the options, make sure "Background Update" is set. What kind of download speed are you seeing?

I have a fast connection and while downloading files got, 600,000 posts from a group in about 30 seconds. I'm trying to figure out if the issue is download speed or something else.

Thanks! It was not activated and that did the trick... Now it is 200.000 headers every minute :)

Why download headers, why not use a website that has raw usenet search engines? I personally use this one http://www.newzbin2.es/ and http://binsearch.info/ is another great one.

I use headers pretty much exclusively myself.

- I have them locally so, I can browse at will. Don't have to worry about sites being down or being shutdown.

- With header compression, they download fast. I get an effective 400-500 Mbps header download speed to Astra

- It's much easier to browse locally than on a website.

- I find things just by browsing I'd never see searching.

if you're on a modest computer or slowish connection, a website makes more sense.
