getting old filters

Technical support and discussion of Newsbin Version 6 series.

getting old filters

Postby markeh » Tue Jan 17, 2012 1:06 am

Just -
changed to a new computer
Changed to a new OS - Windows 7/64
Changed to 64 bit

Overall, the transfer (of Newsbin at least) went OK, if not painless.

What I can't do is recover all the old filters. I have moved the file Filters.DB3 as listed in here, but that doesn't matter.

Any suggestions??

thnx,

Start Newsbin, in the options, select "Open Data Folder". Is the folder that opened the same folder you copied Newsbin to? Your newest filters.db3 should be in this folder.

Yeah - thanks. That was it.

I must say its the combined file complexity - where Newsbin puts things, where they were on the old (XP) system, and where they go on the new Win7 system, can be somewhat confusing, to say the least.

Newsbin lets you put them anyplace you want. It's just a matter of editing the NBI file and moving some files around. For example, my data folder is "X:\Data\" and download folder is "X:\Download\"; You can edit the NBI file with wordpad. Newsbin doesn't even really need to be installed, you can copy the program files into any folder as long as you make a shortcut to the new location.

I agree the file locations can be confusing when upgrading windows, but it's 100% in microsoft's court. They keep changing things with every release. At least now they have a proper user space set up for data files so hopefully things won't be as cluttered moving forward as they were when leaving virtually permission-less XP behind.

My approach is the opposite of Quade's - I like to embrace whatever installation I'm running and do clean installs, then in the case of newsbin I'll copy over the files and edit the nbi to match the default install. To me, that just means less things to go wrong in future. Either works.
