Large Newsgroup only shows 180 days no matter what

The largest newsgroup I download seems to download for a VERY long time and observe the download age of 1200 days I put in the options (with display age of 1200 days also). But it only shows 180 days of headers no matter what I do. All the other groups seem to behave normally. Anyone understand what's wrong here? Thanks.

Think this is related. A number of the servers will only deliver 125 million headers which means the largest group have a limited header range. 125 sounds like alot but, for some groups it's only a couple months.

Interesting. My server is Usenetserver. If they are doing that, they shouldn't. But it does seem like that's what's happening. I'm going to ask them. That kind of crap isn't what I'm paying for on a "premiere" server.

YOU'RE RIGHT! What a bunch of deceptive CRAP! These guys are lying about their retention. I may change providers over this. I tore my hair out trying to figure what I was doing wrong. You can only get the headers with nzb files or mid files whatever they are. Thanks for your help, I was blaming Newsbin or myself!

It's only 12 million headers! They are "working on a plan" to increase it. What a bunch of crap. Do you know which providers lack this restriction and are also excellent all around? I think it's time for a change.

So if they don't use headers what do they use? The only alternative I know of is binsearch......

There's basically 3 ways to get the download information.

1 - Headers (which I use)

2 - Newsbin's built in search

3 - NZB search websites.

That seems an arse up back to front logic to me as a step backwards , What is the point now then in buying newsbin. ?

That is like going to the book Libary only to find that all the books are locked away and you have to know the name of the book to give to the Libarian at the desk or to only have a choice of book that someone else has chosen without ever seeing the full contents of the Libary to browse for ideas and pick from.

I'm not saying it's a good thing. Get a good server and it's not a problem. This is a server problem. It has nothing to do with how Newsbin works. Pay for a good server and you get good retention. Roger has in fact, upgraded to some other server. I suspect it's Giganews so, he can have the full 1300 days.

Newsbin doesn't care. It works with any server and any retention. If I was Roger and I liked the old server. I'd sign up with giganews. Download 1300 days worth of headers from the groups I care about and then have them locally. They'll work with his old limited retention server just fine. Giganews headers can be used to download from any other news server.
