can't sort my group list - argh!

before upgrading to 6.21 I had all the newsgroups i subscribe to listed in my own particular order.
after upgrading they are in alpabetical order - sensible maybe, but not for me.
so i tried dragging them to the position i want - and nothing happens!
am i missing something really obvious?
