Windows 7 reboots

Postby weedhopper » Mon Dec 19, 2011 8:36 pm

Since installing the 64 bit 6.11, build 1342, my system periodically restarts. It has been getting worse and now fails a couple of times a day. Is it a 64-bit issue? Should I try installing the 32-bit version, and if so, can I migrate my database without reloading it?

Thanks

If your system is restarting then there is something fundamentally wrong with it. Nothing in Newsbin can cause a restart by itself, although it may be doing it indirectly by loading a part of the system that is faulty. The fact that you are using the 64-bit version should not be a factor. A system restart indicates either hardware issues or something in a kernel level module such a a hardware diver.

I would suggest that you start by using a memory test program such as memtest86+ to make sure that you have not get any RAM that is failing as that can cause the type of symptoms you describe.

Another thread mentioned that SSD disks can be an issue as some of their drivers fail under heavy load.

Might want to pull the lid of and clean the dust out of it it.

In Control Panel/System/Advanced System Settings/Start Up and Recovery. Uncheck "Automatically Restart".

Now when it crashes it should blue screen instead and perhaps tell you why it's crashing. Had a dude the other day with a new SSD report this and the problems was in the SSD drivers.

Thanks for the tips. Since posting I've upgraded to build 1534 and the problem has not repeated. Here's hoping ...

It never had anything to do with Newsbin. For Windows to crash, there has to be some problem with the hardware or drivers. Modern windows just doesn't crash any more. My Win7 runs for months at a time with no reboots.

I expect that it was a weird coincidence, as this machine has been stable for a couple of years.
