V6.1x upgrade problem

Postby SaneMan » Mon Dec 05, 2011 5:57 pm

Hello all

Long time user of the application, I've upgraded successfully through all the 5.x builds. My current version is 6.0 build 1019 - ever since then if I get a new build for registered users it fails to recognise that I already have a version installed. After Choose Install Location it asks for News Server Setup where previously it would notify me that a previous version had been detected and just keep the settings and upgrade.

On Vista, installed to C:\Program Files\NewsBin with the data in C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\NewsBin. The Newsbin.nbi file in the latter location and has all the server settings with passwords and news addresses. I've upgraded several versions on this computer, I'm not trying to do a fresh install on it.

Any ideas why anything from 6.1 doesn't recognise my current version?

I'm having the exact same problem, with the upgrade from 6.1x to 6.21.
I have newsbin on a Nas, and never had any problem with it.
I checked the paths in the Windows 7 registry, they all point to the installation on the Nas.
Last used nbi is also correct.
Anyone have a solution?

I've pointed this out to Dex. He does the installer.

Still you ought to be able to install and then simply double-click the old NBI file to feed in your old settings. I'd protect/backup your current NBI file first before I did this though.

Installer asks server settings and installs to c:\program files.
Don't see an option to change install path.

If you make any changes outside the installer, like move the location Newsbin was installed or create your own shortcut to launching Newsbin, the installer won't be able to perform an upgrade correctly. If this happens, you can still let the installer do a full install then revert back to your original configuration manually. Follow these steps:

1) Locate your current .nbi configuration file and make a backup copy of it, just in case.
2) Run the installer and let it do a new install BUT do not launch Newsbin after the installer finishes
3) Find your original .nbi configuration file and double-click on it to launch Newsbin

At this point, you should be updated to the latest version using all your previous settings and maintaining your stored header database.
