"Load the Download list..."

Postby apsen » Thu Sep 29, 2011 11:42 am

When I start V6 I'm getting "Load the Download list" box. It takes more then ten minutes to load and then there's nothing in download list - which is correct at the moment but why does it take so long to process it then?

Failed and scratch list? They're download lists too. I'd delete the downloads.db3 to wipe things clean.

Turns out 'Wish List' is also part of the downloads - I must have accidentally hit some shortcut with lots of headers selected for deletion that puts headers there. The problem is - I didn't even have that window enabled so I had no Idea what is going on. Why those headers were even loaded into memory upon startup if there's no window to display them?

The wish list exists. The display just shows you what's in it. So, whether the display is visible or not doesn't matter. If you add things to the wish list, Newsbin keeps track of things for you. That's how it's supposed to work.

Ctrl-Ins shortcut will add things to wish. I wonder if you've been hitting that by mistake?

Ouch! That hurts - Ctrl-Ins is usually reserved for 'Copy' operation (the same operation they later have added Ctrl-C for it).

You can change the shortcut to anything you want.

I have removed it from "Add to Wish List" but how do I make it synonym for Ctrl-C?

I don't know. I don't remap my shortcuts. No sure you can re-map Ctrl-C since the lists use them to copy to clipboard.

I don't think you've got what I want. I want Ctrl-C and Ctrl-Ins to do the same thing. That is I do not want to touch Ctrl-C assignment.

I could assign Ctrl-Ins to different commands but I could not find Copy on the list of available commands. Am I missing something or is it impossible?

It's an "I don't know". I've never tried it.

I know this is an old thread, but currently I run into similar problems (6.51):
Even though the DL list was empty (all downloads were finished, NB closed), when I start again it takes several minutes until the "load the DL list" windows goes away.
Now I deleted the downloads.db3, which sped it up a tiny bit, but it still takes about two minutes.
Is that normal? Is it possible, that the Downloaded.db3-wal causes this - it's about 2,5 GB at the moment...

I also have a very slow response, when I click the "download latest group updates" button. I can seee the data is transferred by the speed that is shown, but again it takes quite some time, until the entries are shown in the download window.

thanks!

I'd say downloaded.db3 is the culprit. Might want to delete it. I need to consider some auto-trimming too.

I'd delete downloaded.db3 and the associated WAL file.

Ok, thanks. The Downloaded.db3 itself is only about 250 MB.
When I delete them (Downloaded.db3 + wal), will already downloaded files still be marked as such?

This is just the files list. It's not used for any tracking.

I deleted both of them and they're smaller now. But it still really takes long for the "LTDL" window to disappear.
It also takes almost all of the time for the entries to appear (if they appear at all) in the download window, when downloading the latest group updates. Even though it is obviously downloading them (speed/data transfer is shown).
Would compacting the database (groups) help in any way with speed/reaction times?

I'd install "Procmon" and watch what files Newsbin is loading. You might want to clear the failed list too.

Download, Wish and Failed lists are all part of what gets loaded during startup.

Just FYI, I had this as well, about a 90 sec load time.....deleting all the downloaded.* files worked perfectly.

6.52 will cap the size of the downloaded.db3 files.

Good, I hope it helps. As I noticed, the downloaded.db3 grows pretty fast...
:D
Another question related to speed/size: the CHUNKS folder is pretty big (about 20 GB) right. Would that slow down NB in any way? Can it be cleaned manually, without causing problems?

You can wipe it. It suggests you have a bunch of partial file downloads though.

Might want to wait till the download list empties to wipe it though.

The chunks folder is self purging so, eventually these chunk will age out and be deleted.

Hm, mine seems to be growing, if I don't remove stuff from time to time.
For example partially downloaded files, removed from the download list, because they weren't complete and would not finish anyway, would not be removed from the Chunks folder.
