Timeout - Socket error

Postby willi9999 » Mon Sep 12, 2011 3:56 am

Hy, using 6.0, 1019 (all previous versions too) with usenet-news, it downloads articles and sometimes a part doesnt load right away, then downloading the part times out, the server sends an error and newsbin marks the part red. When retrying to download (right click- retry) the part is downloaded, otherwise it stays red all the time. I get these errors frequently. What can I do to stop this?
Thx

Is this a server or a client issue?

Don't know. Have you done any upgrades recently? Firewalll or virus scanner? I'm not having any issues with my servers yet other people are reporting problems. If your server supports alternate ports, I'd suggest you try them.

tried different ports, ssl2 vs 3, more and less connections, antivir on/off, etc i have this issue all the time but it gets worse, i contacted the provider to see what he says.
strange thing is, that the missing parts load when i chosse "retry", but if i dont, newsbin justs finishes loading everything and leaves the red parts alone.

thx

What happens if you tell it to retry? Right click menu?

Your connection is majorly f'd up and I suspect it has nothing to do with your news server. If you're on wireless, I'd hook in with an Ethernet cable and see if it's any better.

yes, right click - retry, then it loads the red parts (most of the time - sometimes more retries are necessary). No, its cable-inet. You think my connection is bogus? ..I didnt supect that, as i can download i.e. linux-isos and stuff without problems. Must find a way to check that out - i will try another machine on the same lan.

I've seen a rash of these reports over the past 2-3 days. Either failure to connect or read timeouts. I don't have a handle on the cause. It's happening with both 5 and 6. To me, that suggests some software or inet change. Both Astra and Giganews are working fine for me. Nobody on the IRC channel is reporting this either. So, at this point, all I have are guesses.

Try port 23 instead of 80 if 80 doesn't work.

Typically it's your virus scanner/firewall. I mean the occasional disconnect and timeout isn't a big deal. If you get a long stream of them, it's time to check your firewall out. Avast and Kaspersky cause this problem all the time.

Had a guy a couple days ago running full connections and he was having problem. He dropped back to 10 and everything worked properly. I'd start with the the virus scanner/firewall and consider cutting back connections.

I was encountering the same socket errors only after this latest update, but changing my default port from 119 to 23 seemed to bypass it - at least with one full group update. Thanks!
