NB6 - Fresh Install, use of updated v5 .nbi - will it work?

Postby nbwul62 » Sun Jul 17, 2011 3:27 am

No doubt NB6 is a great product. I've been a happy NB-user for many years.

That said, whilst reading some upgrade-woes here, and NOT yet having installed/upgraded
frankly speaking, I hesitate to upgrade. Should I wait for version 6.1 or so ?

Or... in an attempt to avoid upgrade problems, what about if I were to do the following:

a) do a clean install, i.e. at the point where the Newsbin installer detects a previous
version and ask "Ready to upgrade?" click on : No.

b) at the point where the Setup Wizard asks to launch Newsbin Pro: untag "Launch Newsbin Now"

c) go to Newsbin5, make a copy of the v.5.x .nbi and edit the paths

e.g. :
DataPath=F:\Newsbin5\Data\
DownloadPath=F:\Newsbin5\Download\

to:
DataPath=F:\Newsbin6\Data\
DownloadPath=F:\Newsbin6\Download\

* assuming NB6 is installed in F:\Newsbin6 folder

d) copy the updated .nbi files to F:\Newsbin6\data-folder (assuming Newsbin6 created a data folder)
e) double click the .nbi file from there

My question:
When doing the above, sshould then NB6 run without problems, or did I forget something above ?

TIA

I would take a slightly modifed approach to keeping v5 around and available for use:
- Copy the current newsbin install folder to create a newsbin5 install folder
- Copy the current data folder to create a newsbin5 data folder
- Put the current nbi file into the newsbin 5 data folder you have just created
- Edit this copied nbi file so the paths reflect the new path for the newsbin 5 data folder
- create a shortcut for running newsbin 5 from its copied install folder
- edit the properties of the shortcut to add the newsbin 5 nbi file as a parameter
You are now ready to run your saved copy of Newsbin 5 via the modified shortcut if needed.

Now you can run the newsbin 6 install as normal accepting the normal upgrade path. You can try out v6 and if you are happy you can delete the newsbin5 folders that you copied earlier.

If you want to be able to select between running v5 and v6 then create a shortcut to the newsbin6 binary, and edit its properties to add the nbi file you arre using for v6 as a parameter. Now by running the appropriate shortcut then you can run either version of newsbin. Ideally you would give the two versions a different download folder as well, but as long as they are not running at the same time this is probably not necessary.

Of course the above assumes that you have a the disk space to make a copy of the enwsbin5 data folder which can be quite large. However this is probably not a problem with the size of modern disks being what it is.

Most probably I did not explain myself clearly enough. Very sorry for that.

But just for sake of clarity.

Currently NB5.x is installed in F:\Newsbin5 (plus data- and download folder)
For me, there is no need to run NB5 next to NB6, so, actually, if the NB6 is up and running, I think I will uninstall NB5
as I will not be using it anymore.

So, in my post, the idea is to freshly install NB6 in a new folder, say Newsbin6, NO upgrade.
In the end of the setup doNOT launch .
Then update the paths in of the nb5 nbi, like I wrote.
so from newsbin5 to newsbin6
copy the new .nbi file with updated paths over the the newsbin6\data folder
and double click it there.
Then settings are -hopefully!- taken over by NB6.

If they are and NB6 is working same way as NB5, then NB5 can be uninstalled.

thanks and sorry for the confusion.
