V6.0 Build 1019 - Not Working...? (Probably me ;-)

Postby derek256218 » Sat Jul 16, 2011 11:09 am

Hi Folks, i assume i'm doing something REALLY stupid but i just can't get v6.0 to work - previously i had 5.59 64bit working no problems.
I have been downloadng and using NB since v4 and each time, the updates work no probs.
When i downloaded and installed v6.0 a few days ago, i performed the transfer of 5.5x headers as instructed and nothing would download. Opening .nzb files also failed to initiate a download.

All of my connections are 'Disconnected' in the Connections tab - my host is Newshosting
Having searched NH, i can;t see any probs with their servers and they are still billing me so i know i haven't been disconnected.

Any help would be gratefully received

Windows 7, 64bit, i5, 8GB

cheers guys
Derek

What's it say in the logging tab? Do you have things in the download list? Most common problem these days is Newsbin being blocked by your software firewall.

Hi Quade - thanks for getting back so quickly

Log : [14:41:33] HIGH - High Speed File Creation Mode: Enabled

185 files in the Download List waiting for the flood gates to open ;-)

My AV had expired a few days ago (McAfee) and i thought perhaps this might have something to do with it - although everything else internet-wise is ok. I had been persuaded to try Norton so uninstalled McAfee and installed Norton within the last hour - first thing i did was change NB access from Auto to Allow.

cheers

If you are behind a router then NAT in the router is often an effective enough firewall so that you can disable it completely on your PC without any significant risk. Certainly worth trying while troubleshooting such a problem.

Hi itimpi,
just disabled Norton Firewall then selected everything in the Download tab then 'Retry Download' - no change to the Connection status, still 'Disconnected'

Hi,
Critical Error Message box just popped up...

[15:42:24] ERROR NNTPServerWorker - DownloadRecords - Reports Empty Group:alt.binaries.picture.xxxxx
[15:42:30] ERROR NNTPSocket - Socket HandleError - Server:nhxl.newshosting.com SendCommand - Server returned an unexpected response: 411 No Such Group "alt.binaries.pictures.yyyyy"
[15:42:30] ERROR - Server:nhxl.newshosting.com Unable to Select Group: alt.binaries.pictures.yyyyy

xxxxx and yyyyy added to save my blushes - don't want everyone knowing i'm a train spotter - oops

ps - i've had NB running for a few hours now - usually the Critical Errors pop up much quicker.

I'd cut the connections down to 6 maybe. Other than that, I don't have much to suggest. Sounds like it's having a hard time connecting to the server.

Hi Quade,
Newshosting report everything is ok re server and my account.
Tried reducing Connections to 4, still no joy.

Installed v6.0 32bit - same story.

Installed 5.59 - everything working... :?

I'll wait for the next update of v6 and try again.

Thanks for your help guys

I still think this tends to indicate a firewall blocking Newsbin.

It is worth noting that the name of the Newsbin binary is different in v5 and v6 so you will definitely need a different exception setting in the firewall for the two releases.

Yeah, probably something local. Lots of people are using it with no issue.

Hi, i'll try v6.0 once 5.59 stops downloading the few files i had waiting.

I'll dig deeper into Norton to see if i'm missing something obvious

I'll report back later today...
Fingers crossed

cheers

Nope - tried v6.0 again and fiddled with Norton with no joy.
Same with 6.01beta ;-(

Even disabled Norton but still no joy.

Back to 5.59 i'm afraid

Thanks again

As long as you understand that nothing much will happen in v6 to suddenly 'make it work again'. The problem is on your end, so if you ever want to upgrade, you'll need to figure out how to configure whatever is interfering with Newsbin. Almost without a doubt, it's Norton. Disabling Norton is far easy said than done, I'd just uninstall it altogether and never look back, it's a monster.
