Error Logging

Postby magician1962 » Sun Jun 26, 2011 6:39 pm

I have for a couple of revisions seen hundreds of error messages , causing the Critcal Error Message window to appear

[22:28:54] ERROR - Unable to Insert Subject record:..................

As far as i can tell these are not errors, these are matches to filters.

So they probably shouldn't be logged as errors ?

Well, the question is whether these filtered items should be silently dropped or not. I'd rather know what's being filtered out.

Would it be possible to calssify as "FILTER" rather than ERROR?

Possibly use an amber warning icon instead of red exclamation

And ignore from the critcal list?

Maybe this would be selectable by user, so when they have confidence that the correct items are being ignored, they can select not to see them

As an update, todays Critical Errors comprised over 10000 items ! I do not consider that useful information. And as more filters are added the bigger the list will potentially become.

Please re-consider, and maybe add an option to ignore for those who don't care if they miss something

Anything wrong with the ability under Options->Confirmation Windows to disable the Error popup? That option has been there since the latter 5.x series.

True, it does hide the window, but that also hides 'real' critical errors, which would be good to know about.

They're in the logging tab too. The popup window is primarily for the noobs.

Accepted they are also in the logging tab, but I think the point is being missed, that 10000 entries, which is likely to grow as filters are added, makes the list almost useless.

We use the filters in the main window because we don't want to be bombarded by things we don't want to know about, or are not interested in. Much of this is often SPAM. So we now move information relating to what we don't want to the Logging tab, and call it an error, that's the same information overload we didnt want in the first place. It's not an error if we have chosen not to want it.

Logging such as

[06:35:11] ERROR NNTPSocket - NS_Connect - news.......
[06:43:11] HIGH - HFC:Duplicate Detector Match...

are good

[06:35:10] ERROR - Unable to Insert Subject record......

are bad as they seem to relate to 'Filters'.

If the concern is that you need to check what your filters are doing, the option to include/exclude these would be ideal

Sorry if it sounds like I am trying to be contrary, I am not. It's just I have seen this type of issue before, too much missinformation, hid the real information, causing many hours to be lost.
