Failed to create empty document

Postby duckegg » Fri Jun 24, 2011 4:27 am

Hi,

just installed 6 over 5, now every time I start i get the above message box. Soon as I press the ok message, the box closes, but thr program does not start?

I end up having to re-run the installation.

thanks

So it's working now? This suggests it couldn't replace the "Language.dll" file during the install.

It was not working, and every time wanted to start the sw I had to reinstall.

The language file already had an .old copy in it, so renamed the replacement one so there was no language file, but this still did not help.

The sw is installed on my f: drive, rather than c:. To fix it I renamed the old NewsBin folder and re-installed again. Although I have not changed any folder rights on the system from default ones, there seems to have been a permissions issue on the folder/files.

thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I am having the same problem with my computer.

Doesn't really tell me anything. I'm not real clear what you're reporting.

Earlier today I completed installing version 6.1019 over version 5.59. Newsbin started fine. I looked at its new features a bit and exited. Was looking forward to trying out this suave upgrade a little later on. Then hot rebooted the PC after uninstalling another app, did some browsing and admin stuff. Started Newsbin 6.1019 again to search for a file, but it failed to start -- instead flagging an error message (header reads Newsbin50) "Failed to create empty document" i.e. pretty much as previously described here.

Proceeded to re-install. Did not open the app immediately afterwards. Instead I rebooted the PC and then tried to open Newsbin. It failed to start again, flagging the same error.

Proceeded to reinstall a second time. This time starting Newsbin immediately after the installation -- no reboot. Newsbin now opened perfectly.. I closed it and rebooted the PC, but before I opened Newsbin, I deleted the version 5.59 shortcut I tried to use for starting version 6.1019 from the Windows (XP) start menu, and pinned a new one from the new install. Clicked it and Newsbin fired up smartly.

Hopefully this helps someone else struggling with the same issue...

What do you think the problem was? "Start In Folder" not the same location as the EXE? The error happens when Newsbin can't load the language.dll.

I really have no idea, other than possibly that shortcut. Could the clue not be in the error flag heading that reads "Newsbin50"? Unfortunately I did not check out the properties of the old shortcut properties before I deleted it. What I don't understand is why/how the language.dll file comes into play as I have done nothing but install the app three times.

If the shortcut tells Newsbin to start in a folder that isn't the install folder, Newsbin won't find the language.dll when it tries to load it. Then you get this error.

I thought it was generally considered a security error to attempt to load a DLL from the current directory in preference to the installation directory by default.

Just hit the same issue after upgrading to 6.
I have both an nbpro.exe dated 6/18 and a newsbinpro.exe dated 7/6.
Corrected my shortcut from nbpro to newsbinpro, seems to be good now.

When I "upgraded" it did NOT delete the old nbpro.exe file and instead just threw a new .exe file in there with a new file name, newsbinpro.exe. The desktop icon worked correctly, as it was a NEW shortcut but the quick launch icon did NOT work because it was looking for a completely different .exe file (nbpro.exe). Seems the installer didn't do all it should have done when upgrading. Might be helpful to look into it.

Odd, it works as expected for me. What OS are you running? What version did you upgrade from and what did you upgrade to? Anything non-standard about your system? Like running in a VM or running under Linux with Wine?

I explained to Dex that it's the self made shortcuts that start the wrong EXE. He gets it now and will check into why the installer isn't removing the old EXE.

Yeah, the old exe wasn't getting deleted since I've renamed it. Not much I can do about shortcuts the installer didn't create though.

Normally I launch NewsBin by opening an NZB, but after an unexpected reboot I got this error when opening NewsBin from its Start Menu link. I found that link was pointing to "C:\Program Files\NewsBin\nbpro.exe" (which still existed from prior to upgrading), but the correct working link is to "C:\Program Files\NewsBin\newsbinpro.exe" - opening that EXE works fine. So I created a new link to that EXE and replaced the old link; all is well.

Thanks, the 6.01 installer should be better about getting those links straight. The exe name changed between 5.59 and 6.0.
