b10 minor issues and comments

Postby g51 » Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:25 am

- Doubleclicking on a new group opens it in a new tab but does not give focus to it. Is this intentional? In b9 the opened tab received focus immediately. Personally i think it's better in b10 but it might be even better to have this behavior configurable.
- Doubleclicking on a new group, when it opens, if the default sorting is BySubject then the number of headers is not displayed in the tab. If it is By any other column then the number of headers in the list is also displayed in the tab. Also, the first item displayed in the list on a newly opened tab is not the actual first, if you use the mousewheel to scroll up, you will see that there are 3 more items above it.
- When doucleclicking a group, newsbin automatically opens a new tab but it also connects to the server to fetch any new headers. IMO there should be a way to disable this behavior.
- The "lock the display" buttonbar button doesn't seem to lock anything at the moment. Is this an unfinished feature?
- The icon in "update all the groups" button in the buttonbar could easily be used for any other task (like "shutdown the pc") but it doesn't seem to be related to the task it executes. One could also say the same thing for the "filters" and "servers" icons.

There was some discussion about this so I expect the change is deliberate. One can get too many configuration options, so not sure this would qualify for one.

This has already been reported.

Newsbin has always worked this way. If you want to separate downloading headers from loading the Post list these are on the right-click menu as separate options.

What an inconvenient way to achieve that! It would be easier if doubleclicking on a group was configurable: "fetch headers when opening a new group". Of course it would depend on how many users would like such a feature (which could mean just me :( ). Anyway...

I have key equivalents setup and I like single punch solutions, so I use the F keys heavily and also assign those to my custom keys on my logitech gaming keyboard. The upshot? I hit a key, posts for the selected group loads. Far faster than double clicking.
I also have them for dloading, force dloading, and heavily used, delete all posts from poster.

Key equivalents will let you blaze through the session, especially if you disable some confirmation dialogs.

Ctrl-L will also load a group w/o updating headers.
(Much easier than messing around with RMB-menus:-))

Personally, i prefer to have more control in what i'm doing than following someone else's idea on what's efficient. Single-punch solutions as you describe them are very convenient but i would prefer to be able to define the exact single tasks such a solution is composed from. In the case we're talking about, doubleclicking on a group executes 2 tasks because the developer thought it's better that way. For most users this maybe be true, it just doesn't feel right for me, that's why i asked for a config option.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have it in mind even though i'm a mouse user and my instinct is to just go and doubleclick on a group and not singleclick and then press CTRL+L.

Nobody's trying to tell you how to use it, key equivalents are a new feature and I'm pointing out you might find it faster. I'm utterly unclear on the 'exact single task' comment, my single key simply performs a ctl-l, you can't get more atomic than that!
Anyway, I get it, you want to to change a basic feature that's been there for some time. Guess it's up to Quade if he'll entertain the notion...

Let me clarify what i said a little because i get the feeling you misunderstood me. I'm not saying someone (i.e. you) is trying to tell me how to use it. When i said "following someone else's idea on what's efficient" i was referring to the developers of newsbin. Compacting 2 tasks in one doubleclick action seemed efficient to them so at some point they decided to implement it. Granted, it is an efficient shortcut from one point of view. From my point of view, it is preferable if the two tasks could be separated as far as mouse doublecliking is concerned.

Nice. I didn't think of that like this because it involves the keyboard, i'm talking about mouse behavior. Anyway key equivalents seem interesting but you got me confused there. Is it a newsbin feature or not and if it is, where is it? :)

Sorry to revive this old post but there was never an answer from Quade or any other person responsible for Newsbin's design on whether this request can be added or not. I still thing it would be nice to have such a feature for a mouse-oriented user.

To sum it up, i'm requesting a configuration option to disable automatic header fetching when a group is double-clicked in the groups list and a new tab is opened for it.

Thanks.
