Slower?

Postby hererjeg » Sat Mar 26, 2011 8:18 am

Is there any way the new beta could be slower than the release version? I'm on Vista home premium 3GB RAM Athlon dual core 64x2 4400+ (if that is of any help) and 100 Mbit/s fiber cable with 8 connections to Giganews. Don't know how to test this, but I have a feeling it is slower now... Could this be or am I just crazy?

I think you would have to do some measurements to find out, and state exactly what it is you are measuring as it is always possible that some things are faster and others slower due to the change in internal structure.

On my system (which is much lower spec than yours) the beta is much faster than the 5.59 release in my normal daily usage.

I understand, yes. Might just be confused by the download window also; some of the files were paused, but this is normal for some of the files? Also, should not all downloaded files be removed from the download window?

files will get removed if complete and have been extracted, they will stay in the list if incomplete or you have autopar turned off or if there are no par files

With default settings all par2 files except the smallest are autoamtically paused if you add them as part of a compact entry. This is why the PAR tab is no longe necessary.

Also, should not all downloaded files be removed from the download window?

Not necessarily. Entries that are single files are removed after download regardless of autopar settings. If you have autopar enabled then file sets which are downloaded, checked/repaired/unpacked are removed. If you have autopar disabled then they are left for you to take some manual action. The assumption is that if you disabled the autopar facility you are intending to take manual action so the entries are left visible. I believe that Quade is pondering on providing a configuration switch to allow entries to be removed even with autopar disabled.

Just a side comment, I have 100 Mbps cable too and I can't get full speed with only 8 connections to giganews (which kind of surprises me).

I have Autopar on, but some files remain in the download window.

Looking now at my download window/list, I have a lot of rar-files (all part of a large file) marked "Downloaded", but they remain in the window...

But also; even with autopar on, the are not unrared in the destination folder... Why/what/help... ...plaese...?
This was also a problem with the release version, and this problem seems to have come quite recently; in earlier days I did not encounter this often. I understand deleting the Autopar2 file should help, but do I need to do this for every download?

Is there anything I should look for in detail to give you better information?

Quade; I do get full speed with 8 connections mostly :-)

I assume you're adding full sets to the download list, if you select a parent of the set and then properties, you should get the autopar view of the set. Tell you if it's complete or not. This works if there are par files.

I put everything to download, properties says All available...

I have only a trial version of WinRAR - is that a problem?

No - Newsbin comes with its own unrar library.

If you don't see autopar properties then it doesn't sound like you've downloaded any par files. No par files = Newsbin is waiting for you to manually deal with the files. The autopar properties will show you block and file counts. The other option, if you do have par files is to run quickpar on the par file and see what kind of state the downloaded files are in.

I don't really have enough information to suggest anything in detail. It's not clear to me whether you added a set of files including the PAR or just some rar files to the download list.

Downloaded all files connected to the posting.

After manual unrar the file performs fine. No pars in the folder, just rar.

This is then performing exactly as expected. If it is a file set and the set is not processed by autopar it is waiting for you to manually take some action.

Well, but why does not autopar unrar the files? Will autopar only do anything with the files if there are missing rars that needs parfiles to be generated?

If a set of files is completely downloaded (the whole post), shouldn't autopar put together the complete file/files?

No - to operate autopar needs a PAR file.

I can see two possibilities for the future:
- autopar is enhanced to operate on file sets even when there is no par file present. I suspect this is seen as a low priority feature as very few rar sets are posted without accompanying par2 files nowadays.
- an option is added to allow file sets that are not going to be processed by autopar to be removed from the download list once download has completed. This would leave the onus on the user to remember that they need to find the set and do whatever they intend with it (presumably unrar in most cases). A number of users have already asked for this.

I'm pretty sure there were Par files put in the download window, but the did not trigger the Autopar.

If that is the case it is a bit strange. I was going by your statement that there was no par file with the rar set downloaded. If there is par files in a compacted set then Newsbin should not even try and download the rar files until at least one par file has been downloaded.

You do get cases where the par files get put into a different entry in the download set. In such cases I have found that normally Newsbin manages things OK, but not all cases. This is one area I have seen steady improvements as the beta program progresses.

"No pars in the folder, just rar." Ok, I meant no pars were put in the folder I download to - but pars were downloaded by Newsbin...

Then it sounds like no pars actually completed a download. That's when you need to look at the labels on the files in the expanded download list items and make sure they're all tagged "downloaded". If some are "downloading" still. newsbin doesn't think it's finished.
