Version 6.00 B5 Available...

Postby dexter » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:42 am

This beta release has a performance enhancement and a total re-do of the GUI library. The display is more customizable now, allowing you to create 1, 2, 3, or more panes of tabs. Video demonstrating this should be available in the next couple of days. There have also been improvements in the installer.

Here is a short summary of the changes for B5:

  • Complete GUI rework
  • Performance improvement to reduce disk I/O bottlenecks
  • Better UAC support in the installer as well as well as a more streamlined install process
There are a few other changes that are listed on the Newsbin Beta Page and in the text release notes that are available to you after the installer completes the upgrade.

The wiki buglist reflects current known issues and the list of fixed issues. This does not include inter-release issues that are found and addressed on the IRC channel.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page

I'm trying to get the group tabs to all auto-hide to the top edge, but sometimes they go right, sometimes left and occasionally to the top where I want them. Is there some procedure I'm missing?

Ive just tested it with 2 2Gb files( as you can see not very large)
And that memory thing is a nice one. BUT i consider it to be more of a workabout than a real solution.
It does help, now download speed doesnt drop to zero, with 100mb size the least speed i saw was like 4MB of 12MB for the second job while the first one is being unrared

I still sincerely urge you to make it possible for us to
1) turn off par2 verification on the fly for the next job that is being downloaded when the first one is still running(repairing\unraring) via INI file

2)set auto retry failed articles time interval(1 min+)(via INI will do)

3)set extensions to be deleted after unrar(maybe via INI too)

4) allow us to save incomplete partials with auto-assemble

PS Docking\resizible windows look awsome.

PS now ive set 500 chunk + (500mb)1Gb ram. its much better, only 1-3 slowdowns to 40-50mbit (and to 10 with he first file being 4.7Gb in size )for 2 Gb files.
And they are kinda strange. I had about 400 chunk size free when the first job was getting unrared yet suddenly nbpro dropped download speed for the second job and i could hear intensive disk work at the background

PPS 4.7B

but i still DO think that there must be an option to turn off verification on the fly for the second job while the previous one is being processed via ini that is because it gets worse if download size is larger( 100 mb per file and more)

retries are purpoesely not hooked up yet so autopar can be thoroughly tested
that will be an option to delete files after clean uip via a filter

When i remove the second job (DEL) that is complete and par2 verified(the first job i still unraring) later on it still gets unrared though there is nothing in the download list.
(chunk=1000/memory=1000)
It happened several times already.

Am i doing something wrong?

Also ive got a question. Does AutopAR priority have any impact on a disk load or it only affects CPU? And in what way

PS
~3.4Gb+3+Gb.
chunk=1000\memory=1000, autopar priority=high
Nb managed to sustain 100mbit up to approximately 70% unrared (first job) then it started jumping and then suddenly went to total zero and continued to unrar the first job not downloading anything for some time (check the picture)
http://www.imagebam.com/image/76631b122810481

so i would say temporary freezing par2 verification for the next job when the previous one is active is a way to win
Well,i guess im doen now with this, DOnt wanna flood the thread.

The new UI looks very nice.

However, it can't handle the Taskbar being at the top of the screen.

This is how Newsbin looks before I close it:

Image

Then, if I close it and re-open it again, it moves itself up and under the Taskbar:

Yes, it can be tricky. I plan to put a new video up soon showing how to do it.

I'm aware of this. Have you tried it "full screened"? It seems to move around if Newsbin isn't "full screened" when you exit. I slapped in the same screen position code 5.59 had in it and that was a known problem in 5.59. Need to find some new code for to handle this.

Thanks.

1. Position as per screenshot 1

2. Maximise

3. Exit

4. Reload

5. Restore from Maximised

6. Window is in wrong place per screenshot 2

P.S. I didn't see this problem in 5.x

All I said is if you maximize it and leave it maximized it won't move around.

If you exit and it's not maximized, then it moves. Period.

Please remove the "x" close button from the tabs since it's too easy to hit. People can still right click on the tab and select hide.

Sure, well I already had a workaround for the behaviour, I'm just reporting the problem. I don't intend leaving Newsbin maximised -- I do other stuff with my PC, so I always leave it in a window occupying the left half of the display.

With the new scheme, Verification is happening completely out of RAM so, it has no impact on disk IO. It's really quick too. What you're probably seeing isn't verification but, writing 100 megs to disk in one shot. In my testing, True Crypt hurt performance measurably too.

The new GUI in B5 rocks but 2 things I dont like

1st - please bring back a graphic bar zu symbolise the dl rate - just numbers is so easy to overlook on a FULL HD screen

2nd - the x on the groups to close the displayed groups is good but the name display for the group is a little too small ,
so its very easy to hit the x by mistake - please give the group name a little more space

one problem still no solved fully is Poster lock out

if you use lock out poster it takes the poster you want to lock out to the locked out posters list but the
window with the posts does not update so to get rid of the poster in the posts list at the moment you
have to close the group and open it again - in V5.59 before the posts list would update automaticly after you
used lock out poster and the poster you want to get rid of was gone automaticly

Keep up the good work

Im sorry i dont quite follow you.. if its OUT of RAM then it must be done ON disk, no? And vice versa

The question is why it doesnt "hurt" that much using UE?
Also according to truecrypt docs it is CPU that is important when writing to disk because of the decryption\encryption process on the fly, and the writing capabilities of the disk dont suffer noticeably.
I monitored how much CPU Nb6 was using while decoding\downloading\writing and it wasnt much to say the least. I was actually surprised that even with autopar priority set to high nb6 used very little cpu power.

What was your experience with a truecrypted drive?Just some numbers so i can understand what we are talking about here

Alsdo what software can you suggest using to measure my HDD capabilities? Just to be aware of its speed.

I could use ATTO Disk Benchmark for this but what setting should i choose for more accurate testing?

If you dont mind, just PM me, since we dont want to turn this thread into discussing just this one thing , i suppose=)

Think of it as "from RAM". "Out of RAM" means he is reading out of RAM (or from RAM) to perform the verification.

Good stuff, this program. :)

When opening tabs of groups this version allows multiple tabs of the same group, i.e., "a.b.bogus" can have as many duplicate tabs as you feel like opening.

Really like the new interface over B4.

I was curious if you are planning on making it so that the toolbar and the file menu bars could be placed together on one line instead of being separate? Meaning if you try to drag the toolbar up into the file menu bar one will displace the other rather than merging together.

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature :)

My persoal view is that you probably should not be allowed to have more than one Post list open for a given group selection, but others may like having multiple copies. I guess some feedback on use cases for having multiple copies might help with making the decision on the best way to handle this.

Does anyone else have nb6b5 closes unexpectedly?
It happens mostly when i try to download something and select a folder to save to.Then nb just closes and thats it.

Is there a way to check if there are any error messages?

Wierdie with b5 under wine.
The "auto hide" option is playing havoc with the viewing of the tabs. I cant seem to keep the group list open and view the headers (like <=b4) all I get is it disappearing.
Gone back to b4 for the moment.

Please, leave the 'X' tab alone.... it isn't harming anything and its where it has always been, I look there for it when I close. :) So far, so good on beta 5, nothing untoward happens and I think its grand. Keep up the great work, folks!!

Yes, Quade thinks he found something in B5 that could cause this. Hold out for B6 and hopefully it'll be fixed.

b5 does not remember the order and width of tabs in the Search pane. After closing and re-starting Newsbin, the tabs have again their default width and order.

I noticed very slow Autopar function. Fixing files takes significantly longer when compared to b4 and my Q6600 is getting 80-85% CPU utilization on all cores.

B5 crashes constantly while performing PAR decode operations. Not clear what's going on, as log file just says "decode worker unthottled (sic)". Yellow bar in par download I guess means it's repairing files? crashes after each yellow bar completion.

"decode worker unthottled (sic)".

So, Newsbin is running, repairing, then dies and you have to restart it? That's what a crash is. A log message isn't a crash.

That particular message means that Newsbin is slowing down the repair/unrar because it's impacting your download speed.
