Version 6.00 B4 Available...

Postby dexter » Thu Feb 24, 2011 4:03 pm

Several issues in B3 have been addressed in B4. Specifically the crash problems being reported should be resolved.

The Installer no longer prompts you to launch Newsbin when it is done. We've found it was launching as administrator which was causing strange issues for some. We are working to resolve this problem as well so the installer will again offer to launch Newsbin in the future.

The Installer now prompts you to reset the GUI upon upgrade. You can do this every time to be safe if you like. If you don't reset and Newsbin crashes on startup, run the installer again and reset the GUI. Hopefully this will not be necessary as we get close to the final release.

Here is a short summary of the changes for B4:

  • Poster Lockouts now work
  • Fixed Crash/Hang issue when going under Help/About or when viewing Thumbnails.
  • Right and Left arrow keys now expand/contract compacted items in post lists
There are a few other changes that are listed on the Newsbin Beta Page and in the text release notes that are available to you after the installer completes the upgrade.

The wiki buglist reflects current known issues and the list of fixed issues. This does not include inter-release issues that are found and addressed on the IRC channel.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page

The 'cursor left' and 'cursor right' keys do not work in the text input field of Internet Search.

Shouldn't that be fixed?

Works for me. Did you reset the GUI when you did the install?

No, I didn't reset the GUI, because I don't have problems with crashes.

Do I need to reset the GUI to see that fix?

Okay, I re-installed beta 4, and this time I reset the GUI. Now the problem with the cursor keys is fixed for me too.

The problem was fixed in newsbin but, the shortcuts saved in the registry were over-riding the fix. Thats why you had to clear the GUI.

I don't know if this is unique to Version 6.00, or if the problem existed in version 5, but I'm reporting here as it does appear to be a bug.

I use Newsbin with my subscriptions to Giganews and Easynews, and use the names "Giganews" and "EasyNews" in Newsbin's server options area.

I had two categories in the groups list. One was named Easynews and contained the newsgroups in the easynews.* hierarchy. The other was named Giganews, and contained the newsgroups in the easynews.* hierarchy. After installing 6.00 B4 I decided to delete those groups and categories. I first deleted the groups by highlighting them, then utilizing right click -> Delete Group. I then deleted both categories by utilizing right click -> Delete Group. I soonr discovered that the settings for both server's options had been deleted as well. I've since verified that it's the deletion of categories in the groups list which bear identical names to server(s) in the server options which causes the server settings to be deleted.

Does this qualify as a bug? Or should it be filed under the category of "Things not to do while using Newsbin?"

The bug was probably allowing you to make a topic with the same name as an existing entry in the config file. Still, it's not clear to me how I'm supposed to know one is correct and not the other.

It's worth thinking about though.

Thanks,

Hi Quade

Lockout posters does not work fully / the posts list isnt reloaded after you lockout a poster
the locked out posters only get filtered out if you close and reload the posts lists

anyway - its a big help - and its still beta so no need to rush - I am just reporting

Please add an option to disable the warning pop-up dialog box for "UnRAR failed - RAR files Damage, Needs Repair or Incorrect password." It will be useful to the folks that use the sampling feature often. Thanks for the consideration!

Seems like there is a small problem to work on.....
If i have been running Newsbin before i upgrade to b4 and exit to upgrade, I get the message that it's not posible due to the fact an instance of Newsbin might be running and you should exit it to continue the upgrade - but Newsbin is not running - i have tried to upgrade both with reset of gui and without resetting and is not able to upgrade.

But if you reboot and have not been running newsbin before upgrading it's possible to upgrade to b4

Smile to the world and the world will smile back

The installer has two ways it checks to see if Newsbin is running:

1) Checks the process list for the exe.
2) Checks to see if the .dll file can be renamed

If you are sure Newsbin isn't still running in the background, it is possible that you are getting hit by #2 if the installer is unable to rename the .dll file. It means something (assuming Newsbin) has the file locked. It may be that a virus scanner has it locked or something.

Just re-run the installer and answer "Yes" to the question about resetting the GUI.

Ooops ! Using now B4 and NB crashed again, exactly at the end of download.
I reset the GUI when installing B4.

NB was running in background.

I'd say that is not GUI related then. Can you pinpoint what Newsbin was doing when it crashed? Was it in the middle of repairing or unraring a file?

In Options --> Filename Options, there is an "Advanced..." button. When you click it, nothing happens.

Hi Dexter,
It's exactly at the end of a lot of downloads. Files are repaired if needed and are finally OK. When all process are finished, sometimes newsbin crash (not a freeze, a real crash). It runs everytime in background.

No problem of this kind in B1. I didn't used B2 enough time to know if there is a regression à this point. B3 crashed like B4.

We'd have to find a way to recreate it here to really fix it. Quade plans to do more work on AutoPAR for B6 (skipping public release of B5) so hold out for that and if it isn't fixed, we'll look into it further.

I wonder if it has anything to do with running non-English windows. Nobody else has reported this yet. We'll keep an eye on it. Hopefully B5 will be out this week and we can see if that still has the issue.

Do you use "Right Click/Download to Folder"?

Nop, only using NZB as always from 5 version. Never had this kind of problem.
The error message is in french, but NB is installed in english

I will reinstall B6 in english this WE, and will make a report.
Thanks for the good job ;)

It'll be called "B5" after all. It got named to B6 internally because of huge changes, but since it was not a public release, we'll still call it B5. Hopefully it'll cause less confusion this way.

Hi Guys,

I grabbed B4, didn't try any of the earlier betas, and went to install it this morning with plans to do it as a second separate install to leave my NB5 install alone but the installer won't let me do it. It seemed like you could do this before in earlier versions by answering no to the installer instead of just exiting. Any suggestions here or am I safe to install over NB5 and then reinstall NB5 if I have issues I can't live with? I'm not too concerned about retaining my NB5 spool files.

Version 6 creates a new spool folder and performs a conversion when you access each group. You can always go back to V5 and pick up where you left off before you upgraded. You'll only lose headers that you have downloaded with V6 if you go back to V5 later.

Version 5.59 spool folder is SPOOL_V1 and will remain there until you manually remove it
Version 6.00 spool folder is SPOOL_V6

I suggest backing up your .nbi file just in case but the spool folder will be untouched.
