downloads stop in v6 b2

Technical support and discussion of Newsbin Version 6 series.

downloads stop in v6 b2

Postby nethead » Mon Feb 21, 2011 10:51 pm

I loaded a number of items to download in newsbin v6 b2 on this past Saturday; in v5.x they would have finished downloaded long before today.

But, over the past 3 days, I have had to close "Giganews Accelerator" to break newsbin's connection to the newsgroup server; and after reopening "Giganews Accelerator" (not doing anything with newsbin, left it running) the downloading starts again.

i have used "Giganews Accelerator" since it's release and this is the first time i've seen this happening with newsbin. :shock:

thx

Don't use Accelerator - what it does is built into Newsbin. Even v5 had that capability. You don't need to do anything, it just works.

I have the same issue, and I don't use the accelerator.

I have chunks of files that show like they are downloading, but are just stalled. In order to get those chunks to begin downloading again, i have to close NewsBin and restart it.

I set a bunch of downloads, and within a few hours, all my connections are stalled. Didn't do it before v6.

that is what is happening to me...; good to know you are not using the accelerator. I'll keep mine in place for now.

Definitely don't use it. It gives you zero benefit, might have a slight negative impact on speed, and is another thing that can cause potentially bizarre behaviour in the future.

Well, unless of course you're using another package too that needs it...

You can keep it installed, make Newsbin bypass it and STILL use if for other applications. Just Newsbin won't use it.

Installed b3 last night and went to bed. Woke up this morning and had stalled downloads. Checked the logs. Over 4k entries, no errors.

Restarted and let it continue.

I tried throttling my connection and went to work, and when I came home I had no stalled connections. Didn't do it pre-6.0.

Otherwise though, I'm loving 6.

Same here;

using v6 b3 (updated today); no longer using Giganews Accelerator; downloading halted at 20:52pm EST per the logging tab; no errors reported in the log;

closed newsbin pro; reopened and downloads started again;

would appear we have narrowed this to an issue in newsbin pro itself. :!:

I have around 20 threads set, and two slow DSL connections, it takes around one or two days to consume all of them but eventually they all go.

When a thread stalls there is no convincing Newsbin (b2) to close the connection other than close and reopen the application, retry download, pause and assemble incompletes are ignored. I too use SSL and do not use any accelleration. Sometimes the missing piece is missing and sometimes it can be downloaded.

Regards,
Francis.

I just upgraded to Beta 3 today, but I have seen this happen in Beta 2 too. The downloads appear to stop. What I do have done is change the sort order of the downloads. Like change them from sorting oldest to newest to newest to oldest and that seemed to fix it before. But this time it did not so I used the "Kill all Connections" Option then everything started right back up. Below is what the log showed just before it stopped and just after I restarted it. Sorry for the length. These are all PST times. As you can see it stopped logging about 1812 and started again at about 1926. Hope this helps. If want I can increase the logging and send that to you when and if it stops again.

Lets see what happens when B4 comes out. I've made a couple changes to how connection timeouts work and turned keep-alives back on.

Well, so far, b4 seems to have fixed my problem. I'll leave it running over night to be sure, but looks like the problem is gone.

Getting there errors listed in the log

[08:07:42] ERROR Socket - Error: SSL Socket Error Code: 0:991
[08:07:42] ERROR news.supernews.com - NNTPServer: Timeout - Waiting for Server to send Data: Socket - Read or Write Timeout
[08:07:42] ERROR Download Engine Supernews_NA - DL_SDM - Network Read Failure

I assume this is dead connections getting killed, because it's working perfectly now. I even think my overall download speed has been increased, or it seems to.

At any rate, no more dead connections.

Yeah, basically Newsbin uses 2 methods to give up on a connection.

1 - Keepalives - where TCP periodically checks the state of the connection

2 - Processing timeout. 120 seconds from the last command to the server, Newsbin will give up and re-connect.

This isn't new code. It was just disabled in the Beta because of some tests I was doing.

I too have installed B4 and newsbin has been running along fairly happily since 10:00 PST it is now 03:17 PST. Only time it seemed to be unhappy was when I deleted 160,000 posts from the download list. That was due to me re-adding all my groups and newsbin wanting download everything instead just the last 15 days.

Nice work on interface, I really like it.
