I would like to exclude files that:
end in
a four-digit number inside parens
followed by a period
followed by WMV
I've tried the following in my global filter, but it doesn't work:
\([0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]\)\.WMV
Any suggestions?

Setting this as a global subject filter and having Enable Filters turned off, I see a bunch of posts with an "R" in the box to the left of the subject and a status of "Subject Filter". The subjects that match the filter are shown as Idle/New.
What version are you using? Where are you expecting the filter to be applied?

Before the post is downloaded, all Newsbin knows about is the subject, it doesn't know the true filename until the post is downloaded. Usually people post the filename in the subject, that's why we say to use the Subject filter. Since spammers like to use a different filename than what is in the subject, like maybe a .exe file to get you to download something unknowingly, we provide a separate filename filter to allow you to catch that possibility.
Filters are documented in this section on Newsbin Searching and Filtering
