How does Internet Search work?

I'm having trouble understanding the internet search i used searching for *.exe as an example

when i used this no search result:
[.][Ee][Xx][Ee]?
*exe

when i use this there are a lot of results but its not really what i need:
exe

i just need to look for files that have *.exe* Image link not allowed for unregistered users

the internet search doesnt use regex
