Files won't transfer

While it isn't officially supported, we have many users who successfully run NewsBin under Linux with a Windows emulator (Wine is the most popular). This forum exists for you Linux guys to share your experience getting NewsBin running on Linux as well as report any strangeness that we may or may not be able to fix. DThor is the resident expert.

Files won't transfer

Postby tokalosh » Fri Sep 11, 2009 12:51 pm

I have:

installed wine 1.1.9 on Fedora Core 8,

installed Newsbin Pro 5.35,

copied msvcp60.dll and mfc42.dll from my XP windows32 to the system directory under .wine as specified in the sticky on this forum,

Set the Download Folder and Data Folder to /home/userID/Newsbin Downloads
in the configuration. Note that in the app after setting this, it appears configured to Z:\home\userID\Newsbin Downloads

So now,

The app starts fine. I can do searches within Newsbin. If I select a file for downoad, it is added to the queue. Then nothing. No transfer occurs.

Download Speed Limit is neither configured or invoked.
Pause is not invoked.

Any ideas for a remedy?

Thanks!

Sounds like you're not getting a connection to your news server. What server are you using? Considering search works, that tells me networking is working.

Okee doke. I've upgraded to 5.53. I should also mention I'm using the GigaNews version of the app.

At the end of the upgrade install, it prompted for my giganews username and password and it tested the validity of the account and the result was successful.

I subscribe to the search service. I can search fine. Based on this, I assume that the app can access the internet without problem. It's a 20Mbps+ connection so that shouldn't be an issue.

You need to look in the logging/status tab. You can't really assume anything at this point.

I did a search for txt and selected a file for download.
In the status tab, I see the following entry after I select a search result:

[10:14:11] MSG=&NBKey=<something>&FILEIDs=261346125
[10:13:58] MSG=Search Data Corrupt: 262838420 From > 255 bytes - Ignored: 432
[10:13:58] MSG=Search Data Corrupt: 0 Too Short - Ignored 337
[10:13:54] MSG=Query=txt&Limit=5000&Days=90&NBKey=...

[10:13:46] MSG=Uber Thread started 458

What does this mean?

It probably means you can't get the file information needed to download. I'd try a newer version.

Edit: File not Fine.

I've just installed the latest, fanciest available to man. 5.53.

Is there any better available?

5.53 doesn't show logs like the ones you listed. That looks more like 5.35 which is pretty old. 5.35 goes to an old search server we're considering disabling.,

5.53 looks like this:

[17:14:52] Level: LOW MODULE=InterSocket, MSG=SSL Connection Server: is.newsbin.com Stats DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA 256 Bits Compression: zlib compression Version: TLSv1/SSLv3

OK. Right. Was still running 5.35 somehow. Now I'm running 5.53. Verified.

Here is what I see. Tells a lot more:

[14:28:36] Level: ERROR MODULE=NNTPServerWorker, MSG=Failed to contact Server: Giganews - Will retry eventually
[14:28:36] Level: ERROR SERVER=news.giganews.com, MSG=Error talking to Server : Giganews Requires a username and password and they're not set

So I'm failing the connection. Is there a certain way newsbin needs to be run in Wine to make this connection work?

You go into the server options and add your Giganews username and password. The message says, they're not set.

Interesting. It was set. Somehow it wasn't registered correctly in the application.
I had to delete and attempt to re-add it 5 times before it started working.
The first 2 times, the app locked up when I hit OK to save.

I also notice that if I bring another xwindow to the foreground while this app is running and then bring the Newsbin back to the foreground, Newsbin then locks up. I have to kill and restart it.

Working now. Thanks!
