Extremely Slow Decoding - NB 6.91 RC3

I've been downloading 3-5 gig rar sets to an external HD connected to the rear USB ports on my PC using NB version 6.91 RC3.
It takes a very long time to Decode/unrar each file set. Is there anything I could do to accelerate the decoding process?
I do have my external drive connected to a 10 FT USB cable which plugs into my motherboard.
Could the length of the cable be causing the issue?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I unrar downloads on the main hard drive and then transfer the completed file to the external hard drive using the usb-c connection from the motherboard - saves a lot of backand forwards over the usb connection.

What kind of USB speed is it? USB3 should be about as fast as the drive can go.
