Some more cleanup work, getting ready for final release.

Summary of Changes:

  • Implemented new content filter to address false spam positives.
  • Removed focus requirements so password manager should always pop up now.
  • Cleaned up inconsistent password manager menu item strings.
  • Hooked up the "Pre-allocate files" option under Options/Performance.

The complete release notes as well as the download link are on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Ugh. Yes, I have re-created the issue. We'll look into it. Thanks for the report.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this. It appears for several versions now, the new file count is almost always double what is actually there. I do the manual thing with certain groups, sometimes twice daily, and even if I turn off the filters, it is usually almost exactly half of what the new counter column shows.

Nothing serious, just thought I would let you guys know about this.

I am usually always running latest releases of newsbin.

I'll check it out. I've seen the number go up but not visibly increase the number of files when it's completing files that were only partially there in the previous run.

I have to report a strange problem: I always get the message "Display update pending..." everywhere - even in the "Servers" tab. Every line only shows this message.

And no downloads start. It seems the program is totally busy. I waited three hours for it to complete the display update this morning :) But guess what - it doesn't finish at all...

To me it seems the display update is being triggered every 20 seconds or so. In this case it'll never finish before it starts again. Even when I'm in "Pause" mode!

Does this behaviour maybe have someting to do with the broken performance options?

It's very strange to me that even in the "Servers" tab every line only shows "Display update pending..." when I expand the servers being listed. I don't see "Connected" or "Disconnected" or anything...

I now had to install version 6.60 which is working fine with exactly the same settings file and data folder - I just downloaded 6.60, installed it and started it. Download list was loaded, displayed, and all connections to the servers were up and running very quickly. As I already mentioned, I didn't change any Newsbin files in between, just over-installed the last release.

What could cause the continuous display updates and program lockdown in 6.61 RC4?

Worst case, you should only see this momentarily. What it means to see it continuously is that something internal is completely stuck. If you see it for >10 seconds then you know something is broken.

How many items do you have in the download list?
What's the number down in the cache line? (XX/YY) I'm mainly interested in YY.
Is there anything odd about your setup?

My mailbox says 53%. You can send it to ts@newsbin.com too. Dex and I both get email to that account.

And thanks.

I had 56 items in the download list, but every item was compacted (collapsed). You could say per item I got approximately 20 files, but one item had 180 files in it. Download value due was 168 GB.

Cache line displayed 170/200. The maximum value always is 200 as far as I remember.

But even when I set Newsbin to "pause", the display update never finished. Although the program wasn't downloading anything at that time. No connection to the servers either. It just was unable to finish the display rendering somehow. I let it run for three hours in pause mode (!) without any success. From my point of view the program should have been idle during that time, but it was totally busy with something I don't know. My computer's fan was spinning at high speed for three hours (very loud). Closing Newsbin then silenced it at once.

Regarding my setup: I can only tell you that V6.60 has been working fine from Saturday to Monday. It was running through all the time without any interruptions.

What has possibly changed in the display updates in V6.61? Does it use more memory maybe? I'm adding NZB-files only, I'm usually not downloading any headers. So I've got nothing in the groups list currently. I don't use the image database either. Just downloading NZB! There were no repairs or unrars pending. The program really should've been idle (which was the case in 6.60 but not at all in 6.61).

Sounds like there's a problem reading the downloadsv2.db3. That's where the rendering data comes from. Clearly something is broke. No other reports of it suggests maybe the DB is corrupt.

Failed and Wish lists use the same DB.

You could try using 6.60 to finish the downloads or delete downloadsv2.db3 to start over.

I already finished the downloads using 6.60. But I still wonder what went wrong in 6.61 (and why nobody else is reporting this problem). I wish I could tell you more, but I really did nothing special. I have no idea what could have caused this problem.

I added a lot of downloads in 6.61 last week, but I always had "Pause" enabled for that. Because I have a very slow internet connection and wanted to collect unattended downloads for the weekend. My plan was to disable "Pause" and start downloading on Saturday morning - right before leaving for a trip to visit friends until Monday.

And when I wanted to finally start it on Saturday morning, Newsbin was stuck... As I said, I waited as long as three hours, with no success. Then I had to leave, so I quickly installed and started 6.60, which loaded and displayed my downloads DB at once. I disabled "Pause" and it started downloading immediately. When I came back after the weekend, it was still running, but nearly finished. Everything as it should be!

Strange: The same downloadsv2.db3 works with 6.60 but not with 6.61. Unfortunately this file does not exist anymore, hence my downloads already finished... I only remember that the file had app. 3.5 MB in size, not more.

It's still there and you still might want to delete it. DownloadsV2 doesn't get deleted when the downloads complete. That would start you with a clean slate.

Files with PARS are given some extra leeway. I could probably revisit it I guess. 6.61 is more aggressive about downloading pars and assembling the results but the math is fuzzy and it's hard to know if assembling is the right thing to do 100% of the time. Most of the time it's pretty obvious but there are edge condition downloads where it's not obvious. I've noticed other download clients are more into the "one and done" mode. It either works on the first go or it fails. I'm toying with the idea of switching to that mode.

Something is wrong, as i get it installed in german even though it informs me twice during install that it will be in danish and during install it is infact in danish but when starting newsbin its is german.

Having a lot of TV shows that are fully downloaded except for an sfv* or something + additional pars but not unrarring because they need renaming (which happens in seconds if I par check manually) because they're named in a weird way to avoid certain "pitfalls"...

*the missing sfv is probably due to my filters so I don't think it's relevant to the issue.

I'd suggest removing SFV from the download filter and adding it to the post-unrar filter. See if that fixes this. 6.61 should still work even with the missing SFV though.

You can email us the subject and/or NZB for this download so I can check it out. ts@newsbin.com. Don't post it here.

I had a memory crash with newsbin 6.61
Looking at the resource monitor I could see it was eating memory and not releasing it until windows 7 64 bit told it to quit. Or until I quit newsbin.
During a normal 10GB download it would eat all memory, increasing about 1% usage per second.

I had a parameter chunkcachesize=4000 set in my newsbin.nbi file in the performance section. I removed the line and now it seems to run fine again.

I have an older core i7-2600 with 8GB of ram so maybe the 4000 value was too much? It ran fine using the 4000 value with the previous version i was running 6.55 or 6.60 (I believe).

Just to let you know. I am fine with leaving the chunkcachesize line out.

4000 = 4Gigs of memory use. With 8 gigs you might get a little tight. I'll have to try 4000 and see what happens.

Minor bug/corner case.

Removing entry from failed tab also removes it form download tab.

I started a download from headers, it went to the failed list and the error column was blank. So I did an internet search and <CTRL-Y> the same file as before and it started downloading. I then went to the failed tab and deleted the failed download. The entry in the download list was also deleted, but the file continued to download and assemble.

A feature that seems to have disappeared recently.

If you accidently add a download you now have to find it in Downloading Files tab to remove it. Before you used to be able to just select what you added and cancel it.

Could we have it back please.

I can think about it. It wasn't always reliable but maybe that doesn't matter.

reject if filename contains french
reject if subject contains french

has no effect on internet search

Yeah, global doesn't apply to internet search anymore. It caused too many problems.

This isn't actually correct, the global filter can still apply but only if you apply it after the search. it's not filtering Search by default. So if you searched and then applied global it'll filter from that point forward.

You know when you search if you add "-french" to the search string, they won't even show up in the list?

"something -french -german"

Will remove all results that contain "french" and "german".
