Some issues have cropped up in 6.60 so we decided to start a new beta cycle for 6.61. If 6.60 is doing everything you need it to do, there is no rush to upgrade to this version. Read through the list of changes and if something has been bothering you, maybe it's in this list.
Here is the list of changes:
- NZB files are no longer compacted in with the rar/par set
- Info from .SRR files are now included when you ctrl-r on a compacted set containing .srr files.
- When items are queued using Ctrl-Y, to force the download, don't make it start a download over from the beginning if Newsbin is restarted.
- Made change so new records don't get inserted to the top of the post list during header processing. Was causing flickering of the screen which annoyed people.
- Increased the number of watch entries you can have to 120.
- Fixed potential issue with Newsbin filtering out stuff it shouldn't be.
- Headers are now stored compressed again until they are processed. The tradeoff of disk space usage vs. CPU usage is not justified.
- Internal use of regular expressions has been sped up. Should improve overall processing speed of normal functions.
- Fix to make sure the NBI path gets set on exit.
- Added maximize buttons to the tabs.
- Fixed issue where Header downloads failed with connection errors instead of retrying.
- Changed column headers in servers tab and information displayed to make it more clear. Specifically Server Active/Disabled and if the server is set to download headers or not.
You can download 6.61 from the
Newsbin Beta Page.

Are you sure you don't have some other software conflict? For example, the upgrade may look like a different program to antivirus software. If the AV software is monitoring Newsbin's disk I/O, it can slow everything down.

My AV is setup to ignore NB program folder.
Downloaded all headers(Nb 6.60 4163) from a small group took 26 seconds inc download to all headers being imported(0) showing. Just over a minute using latest beta. Retested and results the same. I also opened Aviras main program window to see what files are being scanned by the realtime scanner and it is not scanning anything Nb related whilst header downloads/imports are taking place

I just tried it (under wine) and it imported all updated headers in a few seconds, no issues here.

It's somewhat group dependent. Picture groups are slower to import than large file groups. There are 2 groups I know if that you shouldn't use with Newsbin at all "tatu" is in their names. People are posting there in an incompatible format that can only be downloaded with NZB's.

im scanning the same group, waiting for the import to finish and then deleting group to retest using latest beta.

The install is treating it has a new one. Asks if I want an extended trial then goes through the process of setting things up the first time. Problem finding my nbi file?

Did the same for me in Win 10. This version fixes remembering where nbi was loaded from. Thanks.

I upgraded to beta 1 because my import folder took longer than 15 minutes to empty with the previous 6.60 version. It just kept growing. Beta 1 emptied imports in a couple of minutes, including some of the un-zipped files I forgot to delete. So it works much better for me on that front.
Edit: I jumped the shark here. Pretty much takes the same length of time as far as I can tell.

From the release notes:
- Added maximize buttons to the tabs.
I don't see them. Are they on all tabs (Thumbnails, Files List, Servers, etc) and what do they do?

You're right. They're not in all of them. Looks like I missed post lists. As to what they do, they allow you to automatically expand the splitter and then restore the window with two clicks. Like in download or logging. It makes them mostly full screen then restores the old size.

I'll play around with the interface when I have time. I did play a little bit and think I saw a maximize button once on the far right side. Probably have to have the right conditions (floating, dockable, auto-hide, locked or unlocked, etc). Right now all my tabs are set as 'Dockable' only - save the "Groups List" tab which is auto-hide.

FYI, I hit the excessive memory usage issue again with this build (saw once before on 6.60 release).
NewsbinPro64.exe is currently at 8.9GB "Working Set" and 16.4 GB "Virtual Size" (values from Process Explorer). 6.61B1, build 4195. NBPro is idle, cache is at 200/200 (0), and I've already tried Help->About with no change.
I've not done any "delete all posts by poster" during this session (mentioned elsewhere), I do have a few in the Poster Lockout db if that matters. The machine has Windows 7/64-bit and 16GB of RAM, so I'll leave it like that for a little while in case you can come up with anything you want me to check.
Random bits that I can think of that may or may not be involved:
* Most of the run when it allocated that memory was run under the Scheduler (paused or full speed), though a bit was also run manually under reduced speed (or manually paused).
* I have AutoPAR is disabled.

I was able to trigger it using "Delete all Posts by Poster". That's what I'm investigating now.
Thanks.

Is there any way to install this without going through the noob setup? I just want to update the existing 6.60 installation.
Tnx
Dave

It should do an upgrade install. Just don't uninstall the old one first.

Nothing has changed for the last few upgrades. I take that back, I went to Win 10 and relocated the nbi file to the data drive where it is properly pointed to in the registry.
newsbinpro64 in c:\program files\newsbin
data & nbi in N:\newsbin
