Version 6.60 Beta 1 Available...

Here is the first Version 6.60 Beta. The big news is the new SickBeard support. Also, several internal things have been re-worked since 6.5x.

Here's a summary of New Features:
  • All SSL connections are now TLS 1.0 instead of SSLv3. Drops back to SSL if the news server doesn't support TLS
  • Now supports SickBeard/SickRage. Go under the Options menu and look for "SickBeard Integration".
  • New Watch list interface.
  • Simplified Filter Configuration Screen.
  • Download List and Files List now perform a paged loading. It does not load the entire list from the DB, only what is needed to display.
  • Improved AutoPAR functionality, better repair capabilities.

NOTE: The Download List is incompatible with anything prior to 6.60! We recommend you finish any queued downloads before installing this beta. This applies to the Wish List and Failed Files list too.

There is a ton more information on the Newsbin Beta Page, including more details about how the AutoPAR support is better as well as many other enhancements and fixes over the last production release of Newsbin.

As you start playing with this beta, please either reply to this thread or send us a message through our Technical Support Form with any questions or issues.

Have fun!

Known Issues:

Bugs in B1
- GUI: Icon in groups list shows filter instead of blank.
- GUI: Filters - test button doesn't work.
- GUI: Filters - Consider making it resizeable.
- Engine: Reports that GOG paths might be bleeding into each other.
- Engine: Report that UnRAR filter is not working
- Seeing .srr files left behind.
- Probably changes to how filename filters work for compacted sets.
- Consider uncompacting meta files as a solution only in download list.

Fixed for B2:
+ Engine: Report that unrar folder isn't being used.
+ GUI: Display Settings doesn't show the previous setting. It's not persisting.
+ GUI: Filter Profile doesn't show the previous settings. It's not persisting.
+ GUI: Thumbnails don't work.
+ Engine: Manual delete from files list doesn't go through recycle bin
- Engine: "Download to Folder" uses the NZB Download path if the data was loaded from NZB.
+ GUI: Browsing to path with Asian characters doesn't do proper conversion. Path edits.

Post UnRAR filter is not working for me. Seeing .srr files left behind.

edit: It is also not obeying my "Unrar Folder" setting. I do not see either of these issues if I roll back to 6.55 RC1.

-

Couple of quick things-

- shows incomplete posts when settings prior did not. Have reviewed settings and am lost at where the previous settings were in order to hide incomplete posts.

- The Filter Profile window doesn't seem to display the assigned Filter, but appears to work.

- if I wished to sample a large (7 gig) post to discern the file's content, I would expand the post and Right-Click, Download Bypass Filters, on the initial rar, thus only downloading the begining file. Now, when the first rar is selected in the same manner, the complete 7 gig post becomes marked for download.

Ok, that was three, but only the last is the disconcerting one. :)

Edit:

Have an assigned download path of E:\down\AA\$(HOURS)$(MINUTES)\ for a file that commenced at 2354. When the file (580M) is downloaded, instead of one subdir of 2354, I have six- starting at 2354, then 2357, 2359, 0002, 0003, 0004, and upon completion of the download, all files are combined in the final (0004) subdir, without the other subdirs being deleted.

Previously, if I had selected eight separate, large files in a tab to D/L at once (Right-Click, Download Bypass Filters) those ten wold show up in the same timeslot (2354).

Since I only have a 10 meg line, longer files will create dozens of subdirs throughout the night. Think I'll hold off downloading that 39Gig file for a day or so. :)

is internet search not implemented in watch lists yet?

setting up a list and selecting search, sees it default back to headers when opened again

show filenames seams to be broken, or not yet implemented. Not working in DL or internet search

am rebuilding my list from an exported NZB I made before upgrading. On selecting files and picking "download to folder" the files are being told to download to the folder specified in NZB folder options. Any chance of overriding this if "download to folder" has been selected?

thx

It didn't seem to keep all my original settings when upgrading to the new beta.

Whenever I open a group the display setting drop down box was ''Hide Old'' the beta shows ''Display Settings'' - after changing it to ''Hide Old'' it still shows ''Display Settings'' next time the group is opened. I tried saving the configuration in the File drop down menu but that doesn't keep the change to the ''Display Settings''. The old files do not show when the group is re-opened.

This seems to be a cosmetic problem. I set "Hide Old", marked some posts old. They vanished. Then reloaded the group. While it still says "display settings". Hide old is still applied. It's still a bug but, it's also doing what you want it to.

is internet search not implemented in watch lists yet?

Not yet but, it will be before 6.60 is released. I might work on it today.

Should be mentioned in the release notes. Sorting the download list doesn't work either.

You could delete the "NZB Folder" path setting temporarily in the options. I have to decide if that's how I want it to work though.

1 - As far as I know there hasn't been a "hide incompletes" option in awhile. With PAR files, I consider the feature to be pretty useless these days.

2 - Noted. I think the filter profile thing is like the "Display Settings" thing. Working but, not visible.

3 - It mentions in the release notes you can't just add a single files from the compacted sets yet. The subject of the first file is used for marking purposes. Its the same as the file you sample.

Unrar Folder does not seem to work - all decoded files land in the Download folder despite you have a seperate active Folder for the decoded Files

I did go back to V 6.55 until this is fixed because I do not have the time to sort out the decoded files while other still running downloads write to the same directory.

seams counter intiuitive at mo.

found this in notes - "Perform database integrity check on startup. Could be slow if you have a really big (like 1000's of files) download list"
Can you explain more? Am about to generate a long list. Seams strange to go through motion of speeding up loading to cripple it again.

many thx

I'd suggest you wait it's actually a problem. Then get back with me. I see no reason to borrow trouble.

As for what it does. It checks the DB before it loads it and won't load it if it's corrupt. It gets renamed to ...db3.bad and it starts a new DB. If you have a really large download list. It would be in your best interest to back it up from time to time.

1. Ok, old age has its drawbacks, but I don't recall seeing all the incompletes until this version; I must be missing something (other than brain cells). :)

2. Kinda figured that-- it's liveable.

3. As usual, I missed that. Only a problem on the really big files. May switch to previous version if I can't handle it.

Other than previously mentioned, problem when downloading groups of files. Doesn't seem to adhere to the assigned path as the files in GOG A should go to ..\Down\$(SUBJECT) and GOG B to its different path, also by subject. All files were going to the same folder.

To bypass this, attempted to download wallpapers by Right-Click and "Download to folder Named for Subject" to which I now have three hundred-plus folders named

Wallpaper [001 of 355]_300_1773NAME.jpg_yEnc
Wallpaper [002 of 355]_300_1732NAME.jpg_yEnc
Wallpaper [003 of 355]_300_6288NAME.jpg_yEnc
etc.

Yes. I had seven tabs open, and set my choices to download. Normally, all ended up in different directories by morning's arrival. This AM, everything showed up in one directory, some in subdirs, others not.

I'll have to try it. There should be no cross pollination. Are these files that unrar or other file types? I wonder if they're going together because of a common unrar path.

All types. I figured I'd done something different, and with the new quirks (Download-Named-for-Subject issue), may have burped royally. Thought I'd mention it.

Overall, my settings haven't changed at all since way back.

Main Download- E:\Down\
for NZB- E:\0NZB\$(NZBFILE)\
UnRar [blank]

Two issues I'm seeing: (1) when the Auto Shutdown option is turned on (via button on the toolbar), a 30-second warning is triggered after every part of a RAR is downloaded - should only happen when the full download list is flushed. (2) thumbnails aren't appearing in the thumbnail window for downloaded images.

What I've done to get around this is to add the large file to the download list - expand the file and when the first rar has downloded, then pause the download. I then go to the download folder and use winrar on the rar file - this usually identifies what the post is in the unrar popup window, if i want the post then I just unpause the download or if I don't want it I delete it from the download list.

hth for now.

Will moving items to the wish list from the download list retain them when I install 6.60 - or should I just wait, as you suggested, to clear the D/L list? Or is the Wish List the same new format as the Download List?

Thanks

I should have been more clear about that in the release notes. The format change to the downloads.db3 database file impacts 3 lists: Download, Failed Files, and Wish List. You should clear all of them if you can before trying 6.60, or wait for the conversion function.

For some reason a bunch of my completed downloads are being deleted, no idea by what or why, but didn't happen with the previous version, they way I'm set up is Sickbeard finds new TV shows, sends the NZB to Newsbin via the folder F:\Downloads\Usenet\NZB Newsbin downloads the TV show and extracts them all to F:\Downloads\Usenet\ ready for me to move over to my Popcorn Hour in the morning, now for the last couple of morning a couples of the shows are there, the rest are completely missing yet Newsbin says it downloaded them in its files list...

For me this is normal because my install of SB grabs them and puts them into whatever folders setup it's configured to use.

So the question is, where are they going? Have you checked the recycle bin for them?

I don't have SB set up to move them to any folders because I want them staying exactly where they're extracted as I have to manually move them to my Popcorn Hour. It never happened before so I'm not sure if it's NB Pro that made SB start doing it or what, but yes now you mentioned that I checked my SB folder and it has some TV shows in it, so weird.

After running blind, if my experience is typical, I would recommend the following start-up BEFORE updating headers:

1. As documented, clear Failed, Wish, and Download queues
2. Review properties of all Watch Topics (WT) ensuring Auto Download is checked for appropriate WTs and The "Look in Groups" is specified.

My first two updates yielded nothing because none were Auto Download checked.
Then, I was flooded with spam because I found WTs w/o the "Look in Groups" specified.

Additional finds:
Sometimes I get the same file for downloading displayed at least twice. I think it's just a display glitch (maybe found in multiple WTs?). Closing and reopening Newsbin corrects the diplayproblem.

"Download to Folder Named for Subject" yields downloads to the first file named folder AND empty folders created for every file selected.

This doesn't matter to me, but I found "chunks" sent to my Recycle bin. I've never seen that before.

"Mark All Old" does not 'stick' when applied in a post list. It does stick when applied to a GOG in the "Groups List" tab.
"Mark Posts Old" and "Mark Posts New" may also have problems in a post list but I only took a quick look at them.

Sorry guys, but I'm back to 6.55. System was in "lockdown" perpetually crashing. I received this MS Virtual C++ Library message and the Supernews response below:

R6025 -pure Virtual Function Call.

Lee N @ Supernews.com

Hello,
It appears that your newsreader is attempting to open a new connection before it has completely finished closing a previous connection. This is causing you to exceed the connection limit. Usually after 15-30 minutes the stalled connections should terminate, so that new connections can be started.
If all of your allowed connections are being used, and you change newsgroups or try to download headers, the new connection will be denied causing the error you are experiencing. If this is the problem, simply lowering the number of connections in your newsreader will solve it.
This can also be interference from anti-virus or firewall software, even if you haven't made any changes. These types of software can cause a closing connection to hang open as the new one is trying to open, resulting in a conflict.
This error can also happen if your computer was recently disconnected and reconnected to the Internet or if your ISP has recently assigned your computer a new IP address. Sometimes the connections opened with your previous IP address remain stale and just need to time-out.
Please close your newsreader, wait 20 minutes, then try reconnecting with a lower number of connections. If this problem persists, please try connecting with all of your firewall, anti-virus, spyware, and other security software temporarily disabled. In some cases, you may also need to reboot your computer and router. If either of these are holding onto your connection, a simple reboot will fix most other issues.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
Regards,
Lee

Everything the Supernews tech said is valid. I'm not sure how it applies to 6.60 beta though.

How many connections are you running? If you are running at the max allowed then this situation can occur for any of the reasons stated by the tech.

If you explain what you were doing prior to this happening, maybe we can determine if it was something specific with 6.60. So far you are the only one reporting an issue like this.

I'm encountering the multi-connection issue as well. Using Astrweb, have it set to 18 (of my 20 connections) and it still happens at random. Once it starts, it floods the logs with it. It eventually gets what it needs though.

That said, I can't tell you if it was happening in the previous release version. I typically only look at the logs when playing with betas and looking at issues.

I'd run at 1/2 your max connections. You should still get your full datarate. That will give you more headroom.

Likely what's happening is you are experiencing some intermittent Internet connectivity issues and Newsbin is reconnecting to the news server before the news server recognizes the original connection as being lost. This is more prevalent if you are downloading over wifi.

I've moved the connection timeout into the NBI file so, it'll be easy for you to edit. By default Newsbin is using a 60 second timeout which is fine for me but, I know of at least one person where it wasn't long enough. It won't be in B2 but, will be in B3. When you get it, you might try a 120 second timeout.

In 6.60 B1 and B2 and 6.55, you can get it higher by adding:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DJI Interprises\Newsbin50\Settings\RecieveTimeout

As a DWORD and setting it to a decimal 120.

To the registry.
