Version 6.53 Release Candidate 3

PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2014 8:55 am

We are getting close to final release of 6.53. Anyone still running 6.52 should upgrade to this version as several significant issues have been found and fixed in this version over 6.52.

The last couple of changes in this release are:

  • Fixed issue unraring RAR sets that have no associated PAR2 files.
  • Changed how header importing works in an effort to reduce total load and speed feeding.

More information and the download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

If you have any questions or issues, please reply to this thread or contact us through our Support Form

Still not unraring for me.
Checked with 3 separate posts.

EDIT: PM'ed you one of the 3 I tried.

Well, it's a tradeoff. Newsbin isn't unraring these single file .rar posts on purpose because subs frequently are in .rar files like this and people didn't want them to be unrared. So we either make ebook people happy and piss off sub people or we make sub people happy and piss off ebook people.

Quade and I are discussing it now.

How about making it a switch option? (In the settings)

Looking back, Newsbin has never supported unraring this type of file automatically. I just tested in 6.42 and it behaves the same.

The changes required to support this are too dangerous at this stage. Quade is thinking about supporting it in 6.60. For now, it'll be one extra step for you to right-click in the Files tab and select "unrar". Newsbin will unrar it with this manual intervention.

I can simply do the same in caja, it will extract to the local folder/where I tell it.

Hope to see it in 6.6 then.

You could add it to the per GoG settings if you don't want to do it globally, that might make more sense.

Yeah, that might make more sense. Add to Properties for GoG and individual Group settings. Setting it in the GoG would apply to all the groups in that GoG. Setting it for an individual group would override the GoG setting.

I just updated to to 6.53 rc3 and now it's crashing. I queued a bunch of files to download and every time I crash I restart and it downloads a bit then crashes. I was using newsbin 6.53 rc2 with no problems before the update. My rig specs are:
Windows 7 pro 64bit service pack 1
8 gigs ram
intel i7 2700k

It seem to happen when I was trying to download files that aren't on the server. The current progress "red" marks

I'll switch over the the stable version until they get it fixed.

Hi

Huge speed increase of header downloads, probably over three times faster this morning! (Using EasyNews if that is of interest.) Normally I see 10,000 headers read or so with each NewsBin update, this morning I was seeing as many as 60,000 read each time ... hope this is the new 'normal' ;-)

Thanks for the many improvements over the years!

Do you recall if there was a backlog of headers being processed? Or did you previously download headers before it started crashing? You can tell if there is a backlog by checking the Cache display at the bottom of the Newsbin window. It should be something like "Cache: 90/100 (xx)" and if there are numbers in the parenthsis, that would indicate a backlog. I was able to create a crash issue myself when some header files were getting corrupted so I'm wondering if the same thing happened to you.

I've also had the same crash issue as the poster above. Ive never had an issue before. Upgraded a few hours ago and i've crashed 3 times. I have 3 files in my download list. Also I'm not downloading headers at the moment and there is no backlog.

I tried to make it crash again on purpose and I did it by queuing up a bunch of files I know aren't on the server anymore. I got newsbin to crash and this time it gave me an error "OpenSSL:FATAL ./cryto/evp/digest.c(270: OpenSSL internal error, assertion failed: ctx->digest->md_size <= EVP_MAX_MD_SIZE"

What security software do you use?

It looks like something is messing with the SSL data on the secure connection to the server. You could try disabling SSL and see what happens.

ok I tried to download the same files as last time on a non ssl Usenet server and I got Newsbin to crash again. There wasn't a ssl error this time. Just a "NewbinPro Newsgroup Reader has stopped working" box. I was trying to download <Some shit of which we don't speak> on a.b.teevee. I guess there was a take down notice and it's off the server. Newsbin is suppose to try getting the files a few time then put them in the failed files instead of crashing.

The issue is that right now I have two reports of crashing but, it's not crashing for everyone. You also have that really weird error that suggests something is messing with the data as it's being downloaded.

So, while I don't doubt it's crashing for you. I'm having a hard time making it crash here. I tried the files you mentioned. They're all gone from one server but, not the other so, I disabled the good server. They're all turning red.

I'll ask again, what security software are you using? Are you using a VPN or Proxy?

I use Norton Internet security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro. Are you letting those red files run for about 2-3 mins? if so it will crash before it goes to the failed files section.

I let it run till they got sent to "failed". I'll try some more.

Might be worth exiting, deleting "Downloads.db3" and then restarting. In case the download DB got damaged.

Might also be worth uninstalling your security software, restarting and then trying these downloads again, then reinstalling if it makes no difference. You can also probably tell them not to mess with the connection Newsbin makes to the news server. Really weird stuff like this is often traced to security software and both Norton and Avast are known to cause issues.

Newsbin seems to be running ok now that I deleted the " Downloads.db3".
Thanks for your help :-)

Good catch. We've recreated it and Quade is looking into it.

Do they have pars? Incompletes with no pars or files that have been DMCA'd get dumped to the failed list. If they have pars but, never ever finish, they get dumped to failed eventually too.

Ditto this candidate keeps crashing on me too.

Is this NZB's? Are you using path variables in the download path?

Seems to be a 64 bit issue. You could try installing the 32 bit version.

I confirmed a problem in 64 bit. Trying to figure out what's going on. It's not at all obvious.

I'm part of both those groups. Make it simple when the user asks for NB to rar a file it should unrar the file, in the ebook case it does nothing.

Hy!

Updated to RC3 and also had a crash issue when trying to download an incomplete file. Tried to remove this file from the download queue -> crash.
Deleted Downloads.db3, restarted Newsbin, found all downloads missing :-) copied the Downloads.db3 file back, restarted Newsbin (so effectivly deleting downloads.db3-journal I think) and I was able to delete the incomplete file and Newsbin is running and running and running....

Maybe this helps you fixing this problem in this great program.
Oh btw I'm running the 64bit version on Win 8.1, 8 Gigs RAM installed...

Appreciate the feedback. It's an out and out bug which I struggled with and found yesterday.

When Newsbin runs through all the pars trying to find one to download, when it hits the last one, it damages itself internally and a crash is inevitable. I've fixed and and will try to get a release up this morning.

with an without pars they are dropped within 1 hour. In the logging i can find the following message: "HIGH Retry Failure: Ran out of retries:"

It doesn't think the files are downloadable. Are you finding that not to be the case?

Tried it with the same, crashing file and... everything works as intended - after a couple of tries moved to the "Failed files" list - and no crashing Newsbin

Thanks, Quade!

Speed limiter

PostPosted: Tue Aug 12, 2014 1:29 pm
by Questar_99
Hi Guys,
Did the speed limiter change in this version? Setting a 22mbs speed limit in 6.52 gave me a nice steady 22mbs. In 6.53RC3 while I get a 22mbs average, my speed bounces around between 3mbs and my max of 30mbs, changing about once a second.
