We have moved 6.51 into Release Candidate Status. This means we are ready to make this the production release unless any showstopper issues are uncovered.

Here are the changes since Beta 5:

  • Fixed issue where Search downloads weren't changing state to downloaded.
  • Folder Dup Bypass - changed to default to off to reduce false positives
The download link for 6.51 Release Candidate 1 is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Reply to this thread or contact us through the Newsbin Support Form with bug reports or issues with this release.

someting strange I've noticed in the last couple of beta builds:

I do a download of the latest group header updates, wait until all of the local updates are done, including the 'new records' (called "New Files") counts against each group in the groups list.

If I do a local search of a Group of Groups, then the 'new records' count in the groups list gets set to zero, even though I have not loaded any of the groups being searched.

I'm fairly sure that it didn't do this before...

Well, a "search" is the same thing as a "load" and it's the load that resets the group counts. I'm saying it's the exact same code except when you search, your search string is used to filter the load. I don't know if it did it this way before.

OK, I just thought I'd mention it, in case it was an oversight that needed fixing.

what plans do you have for the folder dup bypass option?

None at the moment. I almost removed it altogether but, Dex convinced me not to.

Why don't you just disable it?

There seems to be an issue with NZB's after upgrade to RC1

I normally use binsearch, select files, create NZB, open. They do not always appear in the download list. If I then create another it seems sometimes the first one will appear and the second , and other times the second only. If I save the nzb, and drop on the download area , all is fine. The issue may ne dependant on if there is just 1 or several items in the nzb

The failed files list has not changed, so it is not as if they are dupes.

I am sure there was an issue a bit like this in an older version, but cant remember exactly Using IE 11 ... OK it was in 6.0

NB has started random crashing again. I just closed a grp tab and it crashed. Yesterday it started to unrar a file and did the same

I'd probably wipe the downloads.db3.

You can still delete and close the tab before the tab is done and induce a crash. I've made delete and mark old much faster so, it should be harder to hit but, the potential is there. Do you just close the tab or are you closing it after doing something?

Magician, you don't see any error messages in the logging tab?

i'd added several files, and had the tab open for about 10 mins after they'd all added before i closed it. I del downloads.db3 see if it helps

Adding won't make a tab crash. It's more of an issue marking a crapload of posts and making them old or deleting them, then closing the tab before it's done.

thx 4 the info. Indeed I've had several tab related crashes before closing a tab before an operation is done. I now keep tab open a while after ive finished processing the posts, due this behaviour.

Quade, logging is currently set to verbose I tried 3 different files, nothing appeared in either Download Files, Failed Files or Logging. Took another file, saved the nzb to desktop and dropped on Download Files, appeared instantly.

It does seem to have an element of intermittence.

If a file gets "stuck" opening one from desktop seems to kick the previous one to the Download list.

How big are these NZB files?

Hi Quade. 28K

I just opened Newsbin went to binsearch, selected 1 item for download (about 350MB) Created NZB and opened from IE, nothing happened. Saved the file to desktop, double clicked, nothing happened. Dropped the nzb on the download window, instantly added.

Hope this may help

These both use the same mechanism to feed the NZB. D&D directly into the download list doesn't. It's a direct feed. This suggest there's something wrong with the NZB to Newsbin association in windows. Like the wrong program is being started.

I'll try to reproduce it.

Quade if it helps, I found the previous case http://forums.newsbin.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=27703

I checked my file associations, they are correct, Newsbin is in fact the only program I have for NZB files - Are there others ? :D .

As an experiment Created an NZB with many files opened from Internet Explorer loaded straight into newsbin. Also saved the files to desktop ( 950KB. I then created a single file, opened the nzb nothing, saved size 40K. Tried a multiple file 215k, nothing.

I will try a different variant tomorrow when I have more similar items to download.
Current thoughts too small a file,
Maybe the first one works, but subsequent don't

magician1962, as you are using IE 11, you could try this: In IE 11 > Tools > Compatibility View Settings > Add the domain of the site you download the NZB from there.

trying to open grp/grps using the Unsorted GoG causes the grps not to display and a process in NB to use 25% of my quad core. The tab will appear but the list will not. Even when closing the open grp tab NB process is still showing the same CPU usage. You have to close NB to stop what ever is running. This onlys happens if you show all posts using the Unsorted GoG, not if you select one or more grps under that category to display. I have have grps that work fine under different GoG but when moved upto Unsorted will show exactly the same behaviour.

You might have to wait awhile the first time you do this. I believe Newsbin is adding a new index to the DB files and if they're large, it might take awhile.

Magician,

viewtopic.php?f=43&t=35071&p=202241#p202241

Sounds very similar.

Hi Quade, tried running as administrator, no difference. I came to RC1 from B3 which was fine

As to other suggestion of compatibility mode, tried that as my first step :)

As an experiment I opened and nzb from binsearch without newsbin being active, newsbin opened and loaded the file. Repeated several times, seems consistent in loading.

Now with newsbin active. I tried the same, files failed to load, but after about 3 attempts I started to just notice a warning dialogue appear for less than a second. The one relating to configuration.

Is there a location I can download B3 again, to confirm the issue clears ?

Sounds to me like you might have multiple versions installed and they're conflicting.

I might just re-install the latest version and see what happens. I think the wrong instance of Newsbin is getting started sometimes though I can't explain why. That's what I think the configuration file error means.

Hi Quade, just did a re-install of the latest. First three NZB opened straight away. Will test further in the morning during my next session.

So if this now works, could we assume a corruption during install?

Possible clue.
I had several items in the download queue, some partial, when I exited newsbin and upgraded. Might this have caused the issue?

It's more like an incomplete install and an old version hanging around on your PC somewhere. I'm not sure why but, the different versions don't seem to like to talk to each other to pass off NZB files.

Not sure about the old version thing. This machine was reformatted November last year and the first version installed was 6.50RC1 (importing the old data) . I always select the default install options, other than unselecting put an icon on my desktop :)
