- Resetting download path resets unrar path in downloads.
- Now keeps the next line highlighted when deleting from the download list.
- Now attempts to pull passwords from RAR filename if it matches a known pattern
- Fixed issue where the subject listed in the files list for a post might be wrong. Caching issue.
- New keyboard shortcut, ctrl-o, will pop up the unrar password manager. This will work for new installs. For upgrades, you might have to clear your workspace.xml file from the Newsbin Data Folder to get it to work.
The download link for 6.51 Beta 4 is on the
Newsbin Beta Page.

Had just finished an update with b3 so loaded up b4 to test it:
First problem:
[10:40:35] ERROR Error: Unable to Convert Server Name to Internet Address: news-eu-ssl.newsgroupdirect.com Port:563 11001
[10:40:35] ERROR DG - Connection Failed: newsgroup direct Server Index:3
Repeated 3 times.
Now this was working litterly 5 min ago with b3.
Tested dns lookup with a ping:
- Code: Select all
ping news-eu-ssl.newsgroupdirect.com
PING de.sslusenet.com (81.171.118.146) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 81.171.118.146: icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=38.9 ms

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 37.673/38.145/38.985/0.505 ms
Might just be a glitch.

It looks like something is blocking Newsbin from accessing the Internet. What firewall or Internet Security software are you running? The update will look like a different program to software like that and you sometimes have to tell it to let Newsbin out again.

None, I run it under wine on Linux Mint.
Just ran it again. Same error only once this time though.
It seems to be downloading headers ok, as there is nothing in the download queue.
Woln't know for sure till tomorrow as none of the groups I use are particularly high volume.

Still there today. 4 sets of them = my 4 gog's I just updated.
I have headers so am not sure where the error is coming from.

You could bypass DNS and put an entry for your news server in /etc/hosts and see if it gets further.

One thing to note I am on an ipv6 trial, maybe it is trying to get an ipv6 address?
Adding it to the hosts file seems to have bypassed the error. Not ideal but working for now.

Well yeah, ipv6 could make a difference. You might want to confirm that it's getting handled correctly on wine/linux - I'm doubting this is a Newsbin issue now.

No way to disable ipv6 under wine.
Strange thing is this is the first time this has appeared. B1-3 were all fine. And I have been on the trial for several months now.

DNS failure pretty much falls out of the scope of a Newsbin problem. It's a networking problem outside of Newsbin. Newsbin says to windows (or Wine) "convert this address to a number" and if windows says "Don't know how" like this. There's nothing Newsbin can do about it.

But why would it start in this latest beta. It wasn't there before that, and nothing else has changed, no wine updates or changes to the pc.

You can't see it but, I'm shrugging. You've piled weird upon weird, Linux, Wine and IPV6. It's not really surprising that oddball things will shake out. Sounds like the DNS packets don't always make it to the DNS server so, it times out. Easy way to tell. If using the hosts entry fixes the problem then it's clearly a problem with DNS.
The difference between 6.50 and 6.51B3 is a couple lines of code here and there, nothing to do with the networking. I'll bet if you switched back to 6.50 you'd have the same issue.

What were you doing at the time?
What does it seem related to?
Appreciate the report. More details would probably help me find it.

Am getting lock ups too. NB has crashed more since i've installed latest beta probably since i've started using it. Lock Ups seam random. Nb just locked up adding files from search, but this has happened in all of areas of NB I use. Yesterday it took me several attempts just to download a few files without it locking.
EDIT argg Turns out ive deleted beta 3. Do you have a link to beta 3? Many thx

If you want to see if B3 behaved differently, it's still on the server
here.

thx 4 the link, see what happens. I did just remember that i jumped from beta 2 to 4, so will be interesting to see what happens. If I get the same problems ill jump back to beta 2, if you still have it.

I installed 6.51 B4 yesterday (upgraded from B2) and has since had 3 frozen sessions.
I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, e.g. by the third occurrence I had a smaller download running and was simultaneously busy clicking "Load older files into the list" (internet search) when NB just stopped responding and I had to kill it in Task manager.
I have never had these problems before in any version of NB.
I use Win 7 pro 64bit.
I'll install 6.51 B3
BTW The link two posts above this points to 650B3

I've reported a few problems over the last year or so and seen other users reporting problems and it seems to me that most of them are using Win7 64Bit - it's what I'm using.
It might be worthwhile having a little poll to see what OS people who are having problems are using.
Just an idea.

Certainly it's a good idea to track the OS that those with troubles are using, but many(most?) users are running win 7 64, me included, and I see no problems. Not sure it needs a poll, it should just be the standard information anyone having troubles submits. Anything like ohanberg's description of actually doing something that triggers it is useful information, too.

running win x64. Not had any problems running B3.Have tried doing grp updates, downloads from internet search and grps, grp updating, mass downloading of small files. All these things caused B4 to lock.

I'm building a low end Win7 X64 VM for some testing. I'll see if I can make it hang. Was it rendering thumbnails when it hung?

no i dont use the image database. If it helps I use the following:- Grps, GoG(updating, browsing & downloading), Internet search, mixed downloads of large and small files, filters in all areas they can be used. In my GUI I have download and completed file list visible at all times. B4 locked up in seemingly random areas. It locked most whilst downloading a list of jpegs. I have downloaded the same files again in B3 without problems. Infact ive still not had one lockup running B3.
btw i have all instances of "Dont download passworded files" checked in spam, yet I still get a lot of files that are passworded downloading(seeing this in B2 upward)
win x64
4GB Ram
Quad core q9550
thx

Trouble unraring download with password, does newsbin handle passwords with spaces?

It should. PM me an example file and the password. I just need the subject and password. I can find the files.

The problem isn't the password. It's that Newsbin doesn't recognize the contents of the set of files so, it can't tell that the password worked.
I'll have to look into it.

The stalling issue fix will also be in the next one. The problem was a deadlock when adding files to the download list at the same time Newsbin decided to update the download list on disk.
