Version 6.50 Release Candidate 4 Available...

We think we've finally fixed the last intermittent crash issue in 6.50 and plan for RC4 to become the final release unless some other critical issue is found.

Summary:

  • Fixed crash problem (hopefully)
  • Fixed issue where messages in the logging tab could consume too much memory
  • Hooked up ability to unrar from the right click menu in the Files list.
  • Made change to suppress header processing for any group where the current article number matches the stored article number.
  • Filtered out message-id filter messages for header downloads
The download link for Release Candidate 4 is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Reply to this thread or contact us through the Newsbin Support Form for bug reports or issues with this release.

Just installed this release version and just noticed that my last updated column under Groups List is not resetting when I do my updates. Under options, I have it set for showing age and not the date. They should be zero'd out but they do not change. Updates are coming in fine.

Kirm

Append: The only groups that are zero'd out are actually the only ones that have received files. If the group does not have any files on the update, it shows the hours since last time updated. Is this by design now?

I'd call it unintended result of the change. I'll have to think about it.

Kinda got mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, always liked to see that everything was updated, but now, not sure if I prefer the fact that if nothing is updated in some groups, it now reflects the last time it was updated. Maybe this could become a switchable option. Not sure how others feel about this. It does have its merit though.

Even if nothing downloaded, the group is current so, I'm leaning towards zeroing it out every time the group is even looked at.

Yea Quade, I have to agree with you on that one. After using the program like this, I find it hard to spot especially with my older eyes....lol. Just may go back to RC3 for now unless a fix comes up shortly.

I'm happy to report that I downloaded and installed RC4 yesterday, and haven't experienced a single crash.

I'm finding a lot of *.r00 files remaining after the autopar/autounrar functions performed by Newsbin. The other RAR files are being automatically deleted, but not the .r00 files.

And is it too late to mention that the list of filters displayed in the drop-down "Filter Profile" menu are no longer being displayed in alphabetical order?

Regardless, I'm back to using Newsbin Pro 6.50!

"Connections" popup is empty ... no connection information shown, although several connections are indeed active.
Not critical, but I like to look at that info occasionally, to see which connections have failed.

(I am using Win XP, 32-bit, if that makes a difference)

Go under View/Servers. The connection info is there now. You shouldn't be able to open a Connections window anymore unless it was opened from a previous version. It's empty because it doesn't exist anymore.

If you got to Options;>Performance select High Powered PC

Make changes, select OK
Then go back in, the changes do not appear to have been saved

That's odd. It seems as though it may be doing what I set, but just not showing it

I've been using 6.5RC4 for a bit and I'm noticing a strange behavior. I have my filter set to display 12 hours of files. That works fine when I first bring up NBP and open a group but it looks like subsequent downloads of headers are displaying quite a few files from the past (though not all.) This is happening with both alt.binaries.teevee and alt.binaries.etc.

Any ideas?

Look in the server options and see what the overlap it set to.

You know the dates of postings are arbitrary. If it's spam you're seeing, they can set the dates of posts to anything they want.

My overlap was set to 5000 which I had done back when Easynews was having major complete issues. With the new beta server there's no need to use that any more so I set the overlap back to 0.

What I said before was incorrect. When I first load up a group it displays just the files posted within the last 12 hours (as I've set it to do.) When I double click on a group so it refreshes headers it displays all posts available. So it isn't spam being displayed but real posts. This is new behavior as with the previous beta I didn't see this behavior. My OS is Windows 8.1 64 bit and I'm using 64bit 6.5RC4.

Just had a wierd error. My server login id had changed for some reason. And ALL had been changed to NO Header download.
I had discovered it yesterday when it added a OLD (2+ years ago) astraweb account to the server list, but today it wouldn't log into my normal server.
So a corruption of the ini file?

Could be. I honestly don't know. I'm thinking if you fix it and it never comes back that it'll remain a computer mystery.

While using Newsbin Pro Version 6.52B1 Build 3181 I realized that the list of filter names is split into two sections, each sorted alphabetically. The first section consists of filters whose filter names begin with an uppercase characters. The second section consists of filters whose filter names begin with lower case characters.

Example:

Ayy
Azz
aaa
abb

Renaming the filter names so that the first letters are all either uppercase, or all lowercase, resolved the issue.

Is such segregation necessary?

Pretty sure I'm just letting windows handle the sorting so, that might just be how they're sorting.

I can look at it though.
