Failed files, assembling incompletes and Par

Hi, I am having a frustrating problem with files "failing." I am running 6.50 B14 Build 2927 64 bit in a Windows 7 64 bit environment. I have a quad Intel processor and 4GB memory. I'm using astraweb eu and us servers.

So I have had intermittent problems with large files failing. The files are composed of multiple Rars and have Pars and a nfo. The collection of Rars is marginally incomplete as are the Pars. Newsbin's autopar and rar seems unable to associate the Rars with the Pars to auto repair the group. I think this is because the Pars are poorly named and if I que up several of groups of like files all the pars have identical names. (or something deeper is failing I don't know about.) At any event, I would end up with the Rars files sitting in the failed files folder unassembled. And maybe a par or two downloaded. Interestingly I know that the majority of the download succeeds because my chunks folder is fully populated with the files I am trying to download.

My first attempt at a solution was to disable autopar / rar. This ended up with the Rar files sitting in the failed files folder again. I was able to successfully download and repair the files by downloading the files again then watching as newsbin "downloaded" the files again, (downloaded is in quotes as the rate of the download is too fast and it must be verifying the chunks), and waiting to the last second and right clicking assemble incompletes. And holding by breath. If I timed it right then after minutes the assembled files will start appearing in the download folder, if not then its back to the failed folder.

Whats frustrating is that if I can get all the incomplete rars and pars into the download folder Quickpar and WinRAR work like a charm, so its not an issue of insufficient files to complete the whole.

Is there any way to auto assemble the files in the failed folder?

Where I suspect pars may not be well identified is there a way to get Newsbin to mindlessly download regardless if Newsbin thinks there are enough parts?

Or should I uninstall and try the 32bit version?

Thanks for any advice.

32/64 bit version won't matter. They're functionally identical.

1 - Newsbin will fail any incomplete download that it doesn't have pars for. Meaning that it can't associate a par with the actual file. Your symptoms suggest there's an association problem.

2 - If you pause, then add the files back from the failed tab, into the download tab, you can assemble-incompletes in the download tab. Pausing will prevent them from being sent back to the failed folder.

If you PM me an example subject and group, I can look at the files. Don't post them here. I have a feeling I know which kind of files you mean and if so, the problem is the poster has used an odd naming convention for the files that confuses Newsbin.

So I have been trying to return the files from the failed files folder to the download folder, then pausing and right clicking assemble incompletes but Newsbin just sits there unwilling to assemble them. If I let the download process play out I've noticed it will only assemble the parts when the icon switches to "downloaded" from "downloading." Reasonable but the file will fail and move to the failed folder before all the parts are "downloaded" and assemble leaving a few assembled files but most still in chunks.

Its frustrating that Newsbin thinks it knows better then me about when not to D/L a file.

I realize that if the original post was proper there would be no issue. But I remember having no difficulty in earlier versions of Newsbin working "Assemble Incompletes and Remove." So Im puzzled why the ability to simply brut force a file down is gone.

Thanks again

The problem is all the pars have exactly the same name. That means they'll be renaming/overwriting each other if you download more than one set at a time. Having a bunch of incompletes just makes it worse because that means you'll really get a bunch of overwriting.

Basically to fix it, I'd have to rename the PARS as they land into some non-repeatable filename.

For now, you could solve this problem by adding them to download from the right click "Download to Folder named for Subject". I'm going to try one to verify it works but, it should work.

If you try to assemble the entire set and there's not enough to fix, Newsbin won't let you assemble them because it doesn't think they can be fixed. If you hit the + icon and select the individual files and then assemble the groups of individual files, it'll assemble no matter what.

Basically expanding with the + icon and assembling the individual files, even groups of them, lets you bypass the safety features.

I ran a test using "Download to folder named for subject" and so far, it seems to be working.

I'm on board with you. And that's exactly what I did when I originally D/Led them. (Download to Folder). I still had difficulties. Could it be related to Newsbin grabbing the small par files first in a bulk download?

I can't say for certain. Having pars with the same name is certainly throwing a monkey wrench into things particularly with partials. In my testing, I didn't have any partial downloads. I tested one download with "download to folder named for subject" and it worked. As long as the small par is going into the same folder as the rest of the pars (meaning you're not trying to change the path after you added the download), I'm unclear why it wouldn't work.

I'm going to look into giving each par a unique name.

Thanks for your help.

(also I'd love an assemble incompletes in the failed file tab) Just a wish...
