newsbin50 failed to create empty document

The .exe and notes file are the same date so ... Version 6.50 Beta 8 Build 2721 - May 10, 2013 ... so using it fine for 2+ months
Needed bandwidth quickly so I shut NB down. Upon restart - missing backup ...I selected the most recent .NBI to restore. Now it keeps saying "failed to create empty document". Program shows no sign of starting.
Yes I'm using the newsbinpro64.exe from the program directory. There is no other .EXE.
I also deleted Newsbin 4-6.nbi in the appdata newsbin folder and used older backup when prompted. 'creating another newsbin 4-6.nbi. newsbin.nbi still exists dated 4/6/2013.
Opening a .NZB results in the same 'empty document error.
I don't have a .INI in the program directory or elsewhere - only .nbi (right?)
