NewsBin error = "windows does not have a viewer"

Since I installed beta 2, I cannot open any downloaded photo or video from the download list. I get the error message that "Windows does not have a viewer for this file: . . ."
All of these formats and extensions are configured in Windows to open with a viewer and work correctly.
What has happened?

I uninstalled beta 2 and reinstalled version 6.42 final. Same error message now.

Newsbin just asks windows to display the file. There's no magic. If I had to guess, I'd guess one of your security programs is preventing Newsbin from invoking files.

It was working okay before and I have not changed anything, so this is still a mystery.
I was planning to wait until you posted the fix for beta 3 on Monday, but when I got home this evening I decided that if going backward wouldn't work, maybe forward would. I installed the latest beta and everything came back to the way it had been. The associations work okay now and other weirdnesses have vanished.

You know, if something like that happened to my PC, I'd think it was time for a wipe and re-install.

Actually, none of the problems have disappeared. I had loaded an older .nbi file by mistake. Using the current .nbi file brings back the errors.
One other annoyance is that multiple tabs are no longer displayed. Only one group shows at a time, no tabs.
There is no time in my life currently to rebuild this machine, unfortunately.

It's an option. Sounds like you might still be using the wrong NBI. If you look in the options, you'll find multi-tab mode.

Okay. Found it. It's all coming back together.
One more favor, por favor. Some time ago you explained how to set up a hot key to zap spam. It was control-q and it would remove all posts in a group by the selected poster. I can't find my notes for that. Would you repost those, please. [Disregard - I found the original posts. Didn't realize they would still be on the server.]
Still can't get anything to launch from the list of downloaded files, though. My security app gives newsbin full permissions to do anything, so I can't find the problem.
Thanks, JL

Completely disable any and all security apps and try again, at least that identifies one of them as the culprit once and for all. It's always possible you've found an obscure bug, but everything points to something happening after newsbin attempts to start something. Otherwise it tends to be a bit like whack a mole. Remove the variables then add them back until it breaks. Many 'security' programs are fairly nefarious in how they seem to ignore the 'ignore' options.

Found the problem. It was in the Microsoft security level settings. I had to lower the level a notch and stuff is working again. Some Microsoft update must have reset this because I didn't.
Thanks for the concern.

Recently this problem resurfaced. Changing the MS security settings no longer works.
I found that the level of my log-in was a key. If I am logged in as just a user, I cannot open videos or photos from inside newsbin. I get that "windows does not have a viewer" message again. But if I am logged in as an administrator, there are no problems in this area.
For security reasons, I really don't want to have to use the administrator level.
Can anyone help with this?

Maybe you're saving the files to a folder your normal user doesn't have permission to access. If running as admin works, the problem is permissions to the folders.

The files and folders that Newsbin can't open are all accessible to the user. I went through all the permissions (pain in the butt) and I can't find anything there that would cause this problem.

Did you check windows associations for those file types? Maybe the program you use for these file types was installed as administrator and the user account didn't pick up the windows association or something.
