With the holidays, Beta 1 never really made it to a public release. We are here with Beta 2 which addresses issues in 6.41 and changes the behavior of one function that lots of people were complaining about.

Summary:
  • Bug fixes and cosmetic changes to 6.41
  • Changed behavior of "Download to Folder Named for Subject". It is now configurable to either use the subject of the first file in the list of selected files or download to folders named after each subject of each file in the list.
  • Fixed potential crash problem that occured if a news server returned some unexpected response.
  • Fixed issue with a misleading error appearing if there was a timeout performing an Internet Search.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

If you find any issues, either reply to this post of contact us through the Newsbin Technical Support form.

Is that the Default? Or do we need to configure it somewhere?

You'll have to re-download headers if you want it to apply to groups you're already current on. Basically it's a change to how headers are stored on disk so, it'll only apply to headers downloaded since you upgraded.

It works the same as regular RARS and PARS. You don't have to do anything.

Is it possible to turn this feature off? If I set the min size and max size, is that honored within the compact list?

In other words, let's say I have max set to 500k with the following list:

asdfg
asdfg.0 = 1m
asdfg.1 = 1m
asdfg.2 = 4k
asdfg.3 = 1m

Would this still produce the filtered result and display the following:

asdfg.2

It's just like rars and pars.

I don't really get what you're asking for though. No you can't turn it off but, you can stick with 6.41 that does no compaction.

asdfg.0 = 200 megs or whatever is what it'll show.

It's an advanced setting if it involves editing the configuration file - just be aware that doing this is the sort of thing that can bite you in the ass down the road - it's easy to set something now and forget in a week. A year later, that obscure setting is causing bizarre behaviour in combination with something else.

But lectures aside...

You need to edit the nbi configuration file. Quit Newsbin, *make a copy*, edit it with a text editor, then put the entry as mentioned in the release notes in the section after the heading "[SETTINGS]"

ok, I've tested the new feature now and it seems to work well.

But I still miss the feature that I called for about 3 years ago.

NewsBin should be able to create new folders, depending on the composition of the character file names.
If you want such as downloading large amount of files (collections) with the same file name but sopm have different end numbers so should these sortearas automatically in the folder that is automatically created by News Bin.
Think if Iike to download all images whose names begin with: "mustang_78_001.jpg"
"mustang_78_002.jpg" and so on ... and then othern files called: mustang_80_001.jpg and mustang_80_002.jpg and so on.
Often all those files have same subject...
Then I like to have an option That i state manually that the NAME of each group of files is the first 8-10 characters: "mustang_XX" (Base="mustang_" and the changing part : "XX" = two digits in the file name)
Then NewsBin Should be Able to create one folder called "mustang_78" and another called "mustang_80" and then place all the accompanying images in each folder.
This feature would certainly be appreciated by all who devote endless lot of time afterwards having to sort them downloaded files.
Some similar function is available in software called "NewNamePro" . In this software there is options to sort files in automatically created folders. (But this software is old and working very slow.)

Would you please consider whether the function I describe could be possible to implement? I know that many users liking that my proposal was very good and was also interested, but then nothing happened more from you when I asked last time
