Auto dl problem with 6.41b3? + filter question

I could be nuts, but it seems to me that auto dl isn't quite working right with the 6.41b3 release. I've got a windows scheduled task to run every morning at 2am, and it runs a certain .nbi file that auto downloads a few groups. It also kills the task if its run over 6 hours, I think. A couple of times in the past week, I've woken up (between 2am and whenever windows kills it x hours later), and noticed newsbin just sitting there. ? No posts? not very believable... and if there were no posts, it should have auto-exited when there was nothing else to do.

So I hit the button to update all groups, it sticks them (the newsgroups) in the download queue, and then adds the appropriate files from those groups to the dl queue. When finished, it beeps at me, and exits.

Seen it happen a couple of times, but you know me, I could be off my rocker. There could be plenty of times its worked and haven't noticed - OR - plenty of times windows has killed it after so many hours of sitting there. Could go either way.

A problem I've noticed in the past with auto dl of groups/files, is sometimes newsbin gets ahead of itself, downloads the various groups headers, decides nothing is in the queue, and auto-exits. If you hit cancel when the auto-exit prompt is up, it'll go ahead and fill up the download queue with whatevers to be downloaded. I dunno what you could do about it, except maybe check and see if the part of the program that looks for files to download has completed its task before auto exit kicks in? It will go ahead and add those files to the downlaod queue the next time I fire up newsbin, even not in the auto-download mode. Always a surprise to fire up newsbin and have it start downloading before I even get my coffee cup down.

So not a big deal with thae second auto dl item - next time I fire up newsbin they get downloaded, if I don't fire it up, I assume they get downloaded the next night when windows fires newsbin up to to that nights auto dl. I mainly ignore it, but thought I'd point it out since I was talking about auto dl anyway. Perhaps if i had a faster (or slower!) computer it would work just right. Or slower internet connection, to give it time to start processing the headers before it decides to auto exit.

And sorry, maybe I should have made another post for separate issue - I don't want to spam the forum - I notice that someone has been turbo-sporging a newsgroup with files that sound right, but are way too small. Poster name randomized. So I set my filter at the top of the post list to only include files over, say, 1 meg. No good, I still see the ones that are 600-700k, obvious spam/fake/whatever. I tried 100 meg, 500 meg, they still show up. ? Always seemed to work ok in the past. Mind you this is a busy group, I dunno, maybe I've got a corrupt database index file or something. If you guys even use that sort of db system anymore that its possible to get corrupted that way.

Thanks in advance, appreciate it. Mind you, the only changes to my system or newsbin setup at least, has been an upgrade to the 6.41b3 about 6 days ago.

I do wonder if it's timing. Maybe I shouldn't start the exit countdown while headers are still being imported into the database. I'll write myself a note to look into it.

Ok, so it happens just about, if not every, night. I can run the scheduled task via windows scheduled tasks interface, and newsbin fires up like it should, all the groups are marked with AUTO, but nothing happens, unless I hit the button that looks like a down arrow impacting the ground. ( smiley face :) I imagine theres a menu option to do the same thing, like download latest, or something.

Once that button is pressed, then it downloads headers, files, etc, and when done that, auto exits.

So I would go ahead and state confidently, with the reservations that something could messed up with my old .nbi or databases, that auto-download mode is broken in 6.41b3.

Thanks for lookin' into it,

b

I can also state confidently, having lived in portland oregon for over 10 years, that teh rain is teh sucks. bleh
