Found a few more problems we decided to get fixed before final release:

  • Fixed issue with Internet Search where a date filter seemed to get applied even though none was set
  • Fixed issue where Download to Folder named for Subject didn't always work.
  • Change to the Remote TCP Interface to use the same pathing as the post lists.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

I've noticed that some of the files I get end up in the subject named folder of another file. So far it has happened twice to the best of my knowledge. I have it set to download posts to folders named after the subject and they were added via the posts tab.

Hi, I'm having problems with the built in search. This started when I install nb640RC5. Doing a seach, I can see the progress bar cycling, but once it's done the results window is blank. I spent some time looking at various settings trying to figure out why, but didn't find anything until I search on the forums. I just now downloaded and installed the nb640RC6, but am still having the same problem. The key word I search on is "the", which should return a results (well actually a lot. :-)). The results window is still blank. As far as I know, I still have search enabled until Jan 2013 (just renewed in July). But in some ways it like I don't have search enabled. I've tried setting the date to something other than none. Exit out of newsbin and then restarted. Still no joy. Thanks Tim

I'm surprised it ever worked. I can't get "the" to work here so, I'll have to wait for Dex to get back. Looks like search doesn't like "the" all by itself. Might want to add some more detail to the search. Other short things work. For example "to" works.

This isn't an issue inside Newsbin. The search server simply isn't returning any data. At least not to me.

If you also have this with other keywords then maybe this will help:

alexander038 wrote:Hi, i seem to have problems with internet search since upgrading to Release Candidate 3 yesterday.
If i search for common subjects the blue beam loads but don't create a list.

alexander038 wrote:I switched the "show filenames" to none and all is good, switched back to show filenames and still
all good (had no other filters set).

Problem solved :)

Greetings, alex

The word "the" is configured to not be indexed because it is so common. There are other common words like this included in the list to help keep the indexes under control. The common words in our list won't return any results by themselves and will be ignored if it is included with other keywords.

Hmmm, I used "the" as an example, since I know it's one of the most common words used, so I know there should be at least one item that would show up in the results window. If I use binsearch.info, it of course returns literally thousands of items. But I am seeing this as well with other words. Like "end of watch", "hope", "spring". What is strange is that if I do a search on "roxio nxt" it actually returns a error dialog window saying this wasn't found.

Ok, I can see why certain words would not be indexed. So let's try laboratary diagnostic, that should be unique enough to be indexed. This returns the same results as the above keywords. Also playing with the display settings as suggested by alexander038 didn't work for me.

I hope this isn't a problem specific to Usenetserver.com.

BTW is there some kind of purge of the search input field?

So my configuration:
Win7 Ultimate
AMD 4 core 2.8
8gb of memory
2tb of hard drive space
Radeon video
Newsbin Pro v6.40 build 2059

News Provider: Usenetserver

Thanks, Tim

Initially, I thought your issue was filters. It was when I tried "the" specifically that I saw this issue with that word specifically.

"End of watch" returns 475 hits.

"Hope" returns the max, 2000 hits.

"Spring" returns the max 2000 hits.

If you search, see something happen and then nothing shows up. The results are likely getting filtered out. I'd check the global filter and make sure the size and age options aren't set.

This has nothing to do with your news server.

Wow, I would have never thought of that. I do use filters but I have them associated with a specific news groups and I forgot that I made to specific settings in the global filter. What puzzles me now is why the versions nb634 and early seem to have worked with this global filter enabled. Since this is something I did several years ago. :D

Any way, I'm happy that my searches are returning results! Thanks you guys for your help once again! Just wish other software companies could do support like this! I've been fighting a adobe flash plugin for IE 9 crash for nearly 4 months. Each of them point the finger at the other, so I'm stuck in the middle using google search trying to find answer and dodging websites that claim "you computer is running too slow" or "your system is infected". Yeah right. :D

Thanks,Tim

Global should have always applied, the bug was that it didn't. Fixing it just had unexpected results I guess.

These days, I consider Adobe to be nothing more than a virus vector. I try to expunge any Adobe software off my machines. They just recently had their code signing key compromised so, some current malware has adobe signatures saying "it's A-OK".

Well, I guess I should start reading the release notes more carefully. But what you said makes sense. Again thanks! Tim"A satisfied user of Newsbin for over 9 years and counting!"

Just updated from an early beta and noticed something odd In the status bar
Cache = x/100

In my old setup it was x/1500 as my .nbi has

ChunkCacheSize=1500

This begs the question, is it broke ? or have I missed something

Where do you have that setting in the .nbi file? All recent betas have it in the [Performance] section. In earlier releases it was in the [Settings] section.

Mine is in the settings. I updated from 6.40 beta 1 from what I remember. So it looks like the .nbi doesn't get updated?

I have manually moved the setting and the correct data is displayed, though not sure if this might cause other issues in the future if there needs to be a fix.

Thanls for the pointer

It was in the release notes for one of the betas that it had moved, so I do not see it causing an issue. It sounds as though you skipped the relevant beta which was why you had missed the change.

It does seem that way :)

Most people don't use that setting so, I didn't think to update it automatically. Sorry.

Is there a way to format $(DATE) to YYYY-MM-DD
so that things stay in date sequential order.

$(YEAR)-$(MONTH)-$(DAY)

Is one way. Instead of "Date".

Many thanks Quade, that will do perfect.
