This one will become the final release unless some showstopper bug is found.

Summary:

  • Reorganized startup procedure to decrease startup delays.
  • Changes to better support language translations.
  • Other cosmetic changes.
More details and the download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page.

Kudos. Startup once again is instantaneously. I do notice that the logo pops up a little later but I guess that's because you are doing the SSL initialization stuff after NB comes up instead of before.

btw... is there a way to prevent the logo from displaying?

If i accidentally open two instances of the program, both will open and try to download the same thing. Never seen that happen before.

Used to say something like "exiting to preserve configuration"

doesn't appear to be leveraging the complete power of my Intel Core i7-3770K overclocked 4.3 GHz it seems to only use a very small amount. Even when I am extracting large files
high performance mode is all as well as high-speed file creation mode. I would have thought it would be optimised to take full advantage of my high-end CPU
granted, it is extremely quick compared to my previous processor Intel core two Quad however, I am simply surprised that is not taking full advantage of the CPU

Newsbin is typically I/O limited rather than CPU limited. To maximise performance you need to spread I/O across multiple disk and channels if you can.

Normally the limit is your disk drive, not the CPU. Basically an unrar is copying data out of one file and pasting it into another. There's not much for the CPU to do. You want it see it use all of your cores, download a badly damaged file and watch task manager when it's doing the repair.

I can get a total CPU load close to 50% of my machine but, I have to be downloading at 400+ Mbps to actually hit it.

You're complaining about a feature basically. Low CPU usage is a design goal. I mean if I wanted to waste CPU cycles I could easily do so. I'd rather download as quickly as possible with minimum CPU usage.

The bug is still not fixed in Release Candidate 3

When you Enable a news server, you have to close and reopen Newsbin to enable that news server. Connections show up but if you try to download something it doesn't work.

Please test it
Disable all your news servers, quit Newsbin,
start Newsbin, enable your news server and try to download something
it won't work before you close and reopen Newsbin.

The problem started with nb640B2 and is present in all the following versions.

Tested on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit

I mean, it might not get fixed in 6.40 even if I can reproduce it. 6.40 is pretty much complete.

Did you try what I suggested and see if a retry-download would trigger the newly activated server? Just sort of curious.

I have a note to myself to look at this but, I haven't yet.

Download won't start even if I retry-download or try to download something else.

Same problem if you enable another news server that second server won't work until you close and reopen Newsbin.

I use 3 different servers and it is very annoying to have to close and reopen Newsbin every time I enable one of the news server. (I am sure I am not the only one using more than one news server.)

I know for a fact that I can enable and disable servers at will and the download goes. That's why I consider this to be sort of odd. I use 2-3 servers myself and can enable and disable them. Are any if your servers set to "Fill"? None of my servers are. How about "Typical Retention" is that set?

1 - With all servers disabled, I can't even start a download. Newsbin won't add the file to the download list from a post list. It pops up a download warning. So, I generated an NZB and drag and dropped it to the download list. This makes me think you're using NZB's.

2 - I enabled my Giganews server and the download started. Then completed. 230 megs or so. So, right there my symptoms don't match yours.

3 - I disable my Giganews. Now I have no servers active. I generate a new NZB, different set of files. Nothing is happening because the servers are all disabled.

4 - I enable my AW server. Download takes off. This time from AW instead of Giga.

5 - I disable all servers again. Connections tab shows zero connections.

6 - I add another larger NZB this time. I open it up so, I can watch the download.

- Activate AW. The download starts.
- Activate Giga. The download starts from giga.

A this point the sets are downloading. It's about 50% from AW and 50 from Giga.

So, the bottom like is I can't reproduce your results currently. I'm wondering what options you have set for the servers. Are they good servers? When click the + icon and look at the file, does the small par try to download? Maybe you're not downloading RAR sets? I don't know where to take this next.

I had a crash, but wasn't able to reproduce it, as a par repair process was involved.

After a fresh header update and while downloading and a simultaneously occurring par2 repair,
while still loading part of the gog which just updated and right-clicking on a new post,
with hide old enabled, Newsbin 6.40 RC3 crashed.

Hw: Q9550,6gb ram, xp64, 128gb M4 SSD

Without the par2 repair everything went fine.

I'll look forward to test this build some more, if it really can fully automatically download the problematic sets I encountered too often lately it'd be a godsend,
thanks for your continued effort improving this program Quade!

If found the problem is with "upper arrow" (Enable one or more news Servers) in the Servers Tab in the lower part of the screen.

If you enable a server with "Options, Servers..." that work.

Just disable all your news servers, quit Newsbin,
start Newsbin, enable one news server with the "upper arrow" in the Servers tab
load an NZB, try to download something and you will get "No News Server!"

The problem started with nb640B2 and is present in all the following versions.

Ha! servers tab. I forgot it was even there. So what's you're saying then isn't that there's a problem with the servers but, that the servers tab won't start the server.

I'll check it out.

Hi,
I can confirm that enable/disable servers from right-click menu doesn't work anymore.

NB crashes when opening an NZB before the 'Load Download list' logo appears. i.e load Newsbin, click the Load NZB toolbar button and click an NZB BEFORE that Logo appears and it crashes!

I though my NZB's were corrupt until I realised what was happening, I'm just too quick for NB to cope :)

Right clicking after the selection of a file or files from the post list, and selecting "Download to New Folder", used to produce an editable box where I could choose to accept or modify an offered folder name created from the subject name of the (first?) of the selected posts into which to save the selected files. Now it displays the same as what is displayed if I had selected "Download to Existing Folder" and shows the last existing folder used. Is this a bug, or by design?

Hi, i seem to have problems with internet search since upgrading to Release Candidate 3 yesterday.
If i search for common subjects the blue beam loads but don't create a list.

That suggests they're all getting filtered out.

Do you have anything in the global filters or have you set anything min/max/age filters in the search window?

I switched the "show filenames" to none and all is good, switched back to show filenames and still
all good (had no other filters set).

Problem solved :)

Greetings, alex

I'm having an issue where it is saying the file is already on the disk despite the fact it is a totally separate release even after I delete both files and try again. It still complains it will not let me download one is a 720p rep and the other is a 1080p rep
both are trailers for movies
as I collect movie trailers as a hobby

normally I would get around this by selecting download bypass filters
however, should a close.

The program. It goes back to complaining about the file already being on the desk instead of finishing the download

The dupe detector, any new bugs aside, is pretty foolproof since it uses checksums, I'm guessing this is about the setting to rename or overwrite. I can see if someone posts things like two resolutions of trailers named the same(either the final file or the par/rar files) there could be some confusion on newsbin's part. Do you see anything like that?

It's the "delete the files and try again" part I don't get. I had an idea of what it might be but, this part completely throws me off. Once you delete/move the file nothing should prevent a Ctrl-Y from re-downloading the file.

Found what seems to be a bug in RC3, and probably has been in previous versions...

I generated a NZB via BinSearch that happened to have two identically-named and "sized" (i.e. number of RAR parts) RAR sets. After downloading the first set, Newsbin marked the second set as already downloaded and then after completing the other contents of the NZB, it "finished" -- the second of the identically-named set was NOT downloaded. And FYI, in "Newsbin Options: Filename Options: Auto Rename: CHECK!" and no, I'd not previously downloaded any of the files in the NZB.

For quite a while now I've been having "disappearing downloads" -- Newsbin indicates they downloaded but I can't find them anywhere on my drive.

Also, the problem with multiply-loaded NZBs not merging is still in RC3.

Pretty sure where I left this is "it ain't happening to me". Using the load NZB button, twice in a row then the same group of NZB's. I either get one NZB tab or I get N one for file. All depending on the option I set in the NZB Options. Have you tried toggling the option?

Sounds like the same set of files posted twice. Which means the duplicate checker will fail the second set. I'm unclear whether they're really the same file or not.

Absolutely two completely different sets: Same RAR filenames in both sets, and same number of RAR parts in both sets; MD5 hash of each file is unique.

How I was able to download both sets is: Move the first set to another folder, then reload the NZB, (both showed as previously downloaded,) then CTRL-Y the second set.

Are the hidden settings ChunkCacheSize and MemCacheLimit not working anymore? Or is it a bug?

Thanks for the great work you guys do.

They're both hooked up and appear functional when I look at the code.

[Performance]

This is probably the problem. They're under the "performance" section now since they're performance tweeks.

Here's something that might shed some light on the multiple-NZB-not-loading issue:

Just now loaded a NZB that showed NO posts/files... :?: (Totally blank!) So I diddled around a bit and found that by selecting "None" in the "Display Settings" pulldown the AWOL posts/files showed up in Newsbin.

So then I went back to a set of NZBs that were exhibiting the only-posts-from-the-last-selected-NZB-loading problem...and what SEEMS to be happening is:

a) In Newsbin, select "Load NZB"
b) Select several NZBs to be loaded
c) Note that only posts/files from the last-selected NZB display
d) Select "None" in the Display Settings pulldown
e) Note that (what appears to be) ALL posts/files from all of the NZBs now display! :D

So it appears as if Newsbin thinks posts from the other NZBs are "old" and is hiding them...?

Wasn't able to reproduce the crash I encountered at all.

But RC3 (and prior builds) had problems assembling parts from nb2 to rar and thus unraring them on my machine on certain two digit gb size posts, reproducible on my system. Have to try on another OS but it's fairly consistent so far.
