This one has mostly bug fixes. The new mechanism for creating paths for saving downloads is pretty much complete. This is your chance to provide feedback on the implementation. We've had many requests in the past for some script-able download path mechanism and this is it. We hope it isn't too complicated for casual users so are interested in hearing what you think. You can either respond to this thread or use the
Technical Support Form.
Summary:
- NZBFile and NZBPath pathing variables now work for unrar path.
- Made change so when a PAR downloads, all related files also download to the same folder, no matter what the folder settings are.
- Fixed issue where size filters were changing randomly in the Filter Profiles.
- Fixed issue moving an item down one position in the Download List.
More details and the download link is on the
Newsbin Beta Page.

Regex field in Search tab doesn't seem to work in Beta 7. No matter what I type, everything matches. Other filtering options seems to work fine and regex works if I load a GoG into its own tab.

What's the build number? Those are the symptoms of an older B7 where that was broken.

Build # was 1995. Reinstalled and build # is now 1997 and Search is working as expected. Thanks!

B7 Builds 1995 and 1997
In the Groups List tab - the New Records Column is showing incorrect numbers again.
In B6 the correct numbers were being shown for the first time in any of the 6.4 Betas.

The fix for the numbers broke something else. I don't have a solution at the moment.

As a codicil to that and it might help point you to the problem - I update my groups several times a day and go through them downloading what I want and deleting everything else by highlighting them and using shift+delete, except for the ebook groups which I just use the delete key as I want to retain all the headers.
When I open the book group the next time, the posts re-appear even though I have " hide old" in the display drop down box, this wasn't happening with B6 although it was happening in a couple of the earlier betas. The next day the headers don't re-appear when I open the group - a 24 hour thing ??

There's a certain amount of overlap built into header downloads and the overlap is probably turning some old posts "new" again. it's a behavior you want most of the time but, not always.

setting a filter in the GoG Properties windows is broken. It defaults to Global each time. It remembers its active state, just not the filter choice. Happens on a number of GoGs.

It's actually being set properly but, when you go back into the options a second time it gets reset so, yeah it's broken but, the stuff underneath still works.

I like the new path definition capability. Are there more possible definitions other than those listed in Options, Setup, UnRAR Folder?

The pathing options are currently what's listed but, I can add more if needed. People just need to ask.

Thanks for all you're work.
I'm using and like $(SUBJECT) except that it creates a folder with a name that is a bit too long. e.g, I downloaded from a.b.teevee:
104967-FULL-#a.b.teevee@EFNet- <bla................................. >x264-C4TV -_NN - yEnc.
The file was extracted to a folder by that name. I can't remember the exact dialog in the non-beta version Options, Setup, I believe there's an option to extract to a folder named after the file. So, the folder created would be more like:
Ancient.X.FilesE11
Or something similar. Much shorter than the $(SUBJECT) result. It'd be nice to have that path definition option.

How's it supposed to know what to strip off the subject?

I'm not sure... Maybe up to a certain number of characters to the left and right of a certain position? How's it working in the non-beta version?

I believe it gives you the whole thing but there's some attempt to limit it, but I think you miss the point. One of my first comments testing the new pathing was that users are able to build too-long paths trivially. You can just keep double clicking on these nice short variable names but when they expand you're over the limit in a heartbeat. You're talking about just one variable, but how is newsbin supposed to know how you're planning on building your paths? If it was all one name, you could just arbitrarily limit it, but it's a path, you now need to make decisions on which parts of the path to limit and how. In other words, it's non-trivial.
I guess my point is you might ask for a 100 character limit on subject, but someone else who only uses the subject would find it too short, while someone else might find it far too long. I don't disagree this is a worthwhile issue to discuss, it's a matter of hammering out the details. I see it as a general issue, not subject specific, but there are probably certain hot spots, like subject, which would cause many of the problems.

Yeah, I'm not against the idea. I'm trying to figure out how it would in practice. It already strips off the filenames. I could easily limit the length of the subject but, you seemed to be asking for some smarter sort of cleanup.

I'm having some issues with the assigning new path to files. If I set them to download to E:\ drive, the rar files go there, but the completed files end up in the main download folder. I do not have a specific unrar folder pathway listed in the options, and the files were obtained via nzb.
C:\Newsbin Download\$(SUBJECT)\ - main download folder
C:\Newsbin Download\$(NZBFILE)\$(SUBJECT)\ - main download folder for nzb.

How about running me through this? You manually download to a different drive but, the rars unrar to the set download path? I'm just wanting to know the exact sequence. Are you using "Download to folder" and that's what fails?

I get the nzb, dbl click it, and since my main download location is currently not that high on free space, I've selected a group of downloads and chosen the assign new path in the right click context menu to drive E.

Ah, I get it. The unrar path is set now when you add to the download list. By then changing the download path but, not the unrar path, the unrar path remains the default download path.
I'll have to think about it. You might be better off setting the NZB Download path to the E drive for now. Till I figure this out.

*NOT working for me in Beta 7*
New NZB Watch Folder feature. You can create a folder for sending NZB files for processing and specify different download and unrar paths to apply to the contents of the NZBs in each watch folder if you like.
This beta feature in 7 does not seem to work. I have different folders set in my watch profiles for both download and unrar. Downloading to a different folder other than the main download folder works fine but the main unrar folder is over riding my nzb watch profile set in NZB Options.
Options "Setup" Unrar folder set as L:\Featured New\0-This Week\$(NZBFILE)\
Options "NZB Options" Unrar folder set as L:\Featured New\0-Auto\Movies\$(NZBFILE)\
EVERYTHING including NZB Watch is Unraring to the main L:\Featured New\0-This Week\$(NZBFILE)\ folder.
I deleted and re-recreated my NZB Watch Folders and used different folder AND reinstalled with default settings re-creating them a 3rd time. I can't get it to work. No issue in Beta 6 or any conflicts for the Unrar Pathing.

In the last beta's I'm getting a huge lot of '502 too many connections' errors..
Am I the only one with this issue? I've turned the amount of connections down to 6 now (I should be able to use 10) but it's still stalling my downloads.
I've got usenetserver as a usenet provider.
Is anyone else seeing this or should I contact usenetserver support?
Killing newsbin and restarting it doesn't work, I have to really wait for the connections to time out on the server side, then restart newsbin.

From context I'm guessing you are allowed 10 with the package you have and you have previously been using 10. This results in what you're seeing if you run the maximum, there are a dozen little things that could conceivably cause a problem that results in a disconnect, and when this happens Newsbin attempts a reconnect right away. The problem is, on the server side it might take a little bit for your disconnect to trickle down to all the servers, thus 'too many connections'.
The fact you haven't seen this in the past is probably just good luck. Run just as many connections as you need to max out your pipe, staying well below the max you are allowed. Note that this can usually sort itself all out, you'll still get your stuff regardless.

Are you wired or wireless? If wireless, it might be worth experimenting with wiring in and see if the problem goes away. Does is do it SSL and not SSL?
You might want to change your password too.

Running wired.
Wireless sucks when internet bandwidth is higher then wifi speed
I'll try changing the password but I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. I change it pretty often.
It just looks like connections get stuck.
For example, I boot my pc, start a huge download with like 8 connections (10 allowed).
Close Newsbin halfway. wait 5 seconds, start Newsbin.
"502 too many connections "
So, something's stuck.....
Like the server doesn't understand that the connections are closed.
EDIT: Sure, and of course it doesn't happen now that I'm trying to test it again...........

It takes servers awhile to free up connections after you disconnect. The issue isn't Newsbin, it's the servers. They track connections in such a way that after a disconnect, the connection remains in limbo until the server declares the connection closed. That's just sort of how usenet works. With the advent of 50 connection servers, this issue has sort of gone away because if you only run 10-20, there's so much connection buffer, you seldom hit the limit.
How about changing to 5 connections and see what happens? Are you using a simple or complex password?

Running 5 is just an experiment. You ought to be able to run all 10. It's a sign that the connections are failing from time to time. If they fail often enough, all of them will be in limbo until the server free's them back up again.

Yes that happened a few times.. all connections were getting 502 errors and not a single byte came through anymore.
That's when it became annoying
But if the connections get stuck on the server that's probably not a NewsBin issue.

NZB Watch Properties UnRaR path is not working for me with Beta 7, reconfigured my watch properties from scratch, no change. Win 7 x64
NZB Watch Folder: F:\Temp\NZB\
Download Path: F:\Temp\NZB Incoming\$(NZBFILE)\
UnRaR Path: E:\Incoming\$(NZBFILE)\
All files UnRaR to the Download Path, rolled back to Beta 6 and UnRaR path started working again.

just had a post after reloading NB this morning start to download its parts again. I dont mean the whats downloaded check that greys out the part progress bar. It started from the top and redownloaded then renamed Copy(1) and so on
Is there anyway to stop NB from deleting the whole post when indivdual blocks are selected.
So if if have the post collapsed and select to delete, then NB dels the whole thing, if i expand and select a handful of posts, delete just those. Would have been helpful with above problem
many thanks

Running B7 Build:1997
I thought I had screwed up and deleted some of my DL folders until I realized that NB now uses the abbreviated "a.b." instead of the full "alt.binaries" naming scheme to create download folders for the name of the group and is creating new folders instead of reusing the ones already in existence. Was this intentional or is it due to a change in how the name is derived? It's not a deal breaker, I can rename the folders but it's inconsistent with how NB has always behaved.

Path length has always been an issue, and now with the ease of using variables it's very easy to make a path which is too long for the windows file system. To make it worse windows doesn't come back with 'your path is too long', it simply fails, which makes it tougher to debug. I'm suspecting Quade moved the abbreviations over to pathing from the rest of the program to help with this.

Search tab items get marked downloaded as soon as they're added to the download list. That's because the subject of the listed items isn't exactly the same as the real subject so, downloading won't mark them old/downloaded. I don't think this is going to change.
Thanks for the report.

If you can isolate what group's it's happening in, it might be worth purging the group and seeing if the problem goes away. A "Download all Headers" will purge it before downloading again.

I would like to be able to open a nzb file and specify the download location just for that particular download. Currently to do this, I have to stop all other downloads, change my download location, then add the new download to queue. Then wait till it's finished before I revert back the download location and resume my previous downloads.

This sounds like a convoluted way of doing things! Have you tried using the Download to Folder options to specify where you want the download to go? Even if not, I do not see why you would have to stop existing downloads as the download location is set when items are added to the queue - it is not dynamic so does not effect items already queued.

Yeah. This is lots of extra work.
You have two ways to do this.
1 - Load the NZB, right click the files and "Download to Existing" or "Download to New" folder.
2 - Pause Newsbin, add the NZB to the download list, then right click "Assign new path".
#1 is probably cleaner.
