Beta 4 has more extensions to the pathing mechanism (described in this
forum post) as well as some fixes for bugs uncovered in Beta 3.
Highlights:
- Added $(RES) and $(GOG) pathing variables
- If a DVD is detected on unrar, now forces a new unrar folder if the filenames would collide.
- Re-enabled file summary information, even though it doesn't seem to work in Win7.
- Fixed issue where Chunk mode wasn't remembered between runs
- NZB Files in the post lists weren't including the NZB in the pathing.
- Upgraded the OpenSSL library to the latest version.
Many more details and the download link are on the
Newsbin Beta Page.

Thanks for the new beta, seems to be working pretty good!
Noticed this in the logging window , not sure if it's anything to be concerned about "[13:02:38] HIGH - SSL Unable to Add Zlib Compression", Also still having the same problem with the filters , like the the previous Beta.

It should have no impact on your downloading or downloading speed. Turns out 64 bit OpenSSL disables this by default. I had to re-enable it. It'll be in the next beta.
Thanks.

This has been happening in all the beta versions of 6.40 and I've been hoping it would clear up on its own, and since it hasn't...
When starting NB, it now takes almost 3 minutes to become usable (have an hourglass for that time). It pegs one of my cores (I'm using dual core) at 100% for the entire time, and the areas on the status bar at the bottom show the descriptive names for the different areas. Once it is done whatever it is doing, the core usage goes to 0, the status bar information is real information, and I can use the program. I tried deleting AutoPAR2, DownloadMarker, Downloads and Downloaded.db3 files, but that didn't make any difference. Changing logging to 'Debug' didn't show any extra information on the logging tab.
I'm using XP SP3 fully updated, 32 bit. Any ideas?

I'd run procmon and see if you can figure out what it's doing. Honestly though, it sounds like you're hit all the high spots already.
Actually, I have a theory. I'll investigate and get back to you.

My copy of this has started crashing after a few hours of downloading. Once it has crashed, it will stay open for only a few seconds and then it crashes again. Every time.
Yesterday, Quade suggested I do this:
You might try deleting the file "Downloads.db3" in the data folder./
1 - In the options select "Open Data Folder"
2 - Close Newsbin
3 - Look in the newly opened window for downloads.db3.
4 - Delete it and restart Newsbin.
This is hard to do if the program won't stay open,
but I was able to locate the file and delete it. Apparently it is only a temporary fix.
Any suggestions?

So, if you delete it again, it'll be good for a little while and then it'll start crashing again? If that's the case, it tells me where to look.

Since I started running it again this morning, there have been no crashes. Maybe it was something corrupt somewhere, but no problems now that I have seen.
Thanks, jlindquist

Makes me think it was related to what you were downloading.

Also, too, maybe the reconfigured download paths were confused. I did those over and no problems since.

How do I set the options on NZB files where I add the NZB Filename to the download folder and I clean the NZB path across the board as I did in the earlier versions. Those options are missing in this beta.

How are you loading the NZB's?
NZB can have their own download path (in the options). In this download path using "Edit" you can add "$(NZBFILE)" which represents the cleaned up NZB Filename
X:\Download\$(NZBFILE)\
for instance.
It depends on what you're trying to accomplish and how you're loading the NZB's.

Indexing service such as nzbmatrix creates nzb file which downloads to directory where newsbin autodownloads any nzb file it sees there.

Maybe, at the risk of seeming very unsophisticated, you could include an option for those who liked the old way of working with nzb files without individual download paths, to have the universal choices of the earlier betas.

Maybe I'm missing something but you have all the same abilities as before, but optionally more flexibility. I have my autodownload folder specified(you can have more than one if you wish, plus specifics for each one - again optionally), and I have my nzb download path defined with $(NZBFILE) in the path, and it downloads it in a folder named for the nzb. I can't see what's not there that was in an earlier version.

Yeah, Newsbin doesn't care where the NZB files came from. They themselves have no pathing information built in. It's always been newsbin settings that selected the download path.
In the main options window, check the box next to "Download folder for downloads from NZB files". Then hit the edit button, select the folder you want with browse and then double-click "$(NZBFILE) to include the NZB filename.

Is there a pathing option to unrar to a folder named for the par2 file like there was before? Frankly I hadn't been paying attention to the pathing stuff since I was happy with how it worked, but I don't see a way to unrar like it used to. FWIW, I use headers 95% of the time, so naming for an nzb file doesn't work for me.

There's only more flexibility, not less. Do you mean $SUBJECT? I'm not aware of an option that specifically targeted the par name, but I suspect that would cover it.
There seems to be a general perception that things have somehow been taken out of this beta release, but really the issue is something has been changed, and added to. Was gabbing over on IRC with Quade about this yesterday and was suggesting that for the official release there needs to be a way to auto convert existing path settings over to the new method. It's partially there now, but not quite all of it. Not all users are particularly comfortable or familiar with the concept of variables. It's really meant for power users.

IN 6.34, my unrar options are:
Override UnRar Path : Checked
Add a path prefix : Unchecked
Save to a unique folder named for a source file : checked
Example Rar Path:
H:\zt\<Filename>\Text.avi
It may be naming the folder after the file, not the par2 file (but I'm not sure what 'file' would refer to here, the stuff I download regularly usually has 3 files, a video file, a sfv file and and nfo file all referenced in the par 2 file).
So if the subject is
[32432] [a.b.niftyvideos.net][A.Really.Nifty.Video]-[1/70]-"A.Really.Nifty.Video.Rar"yEnc
(and there are corresponding ones for the NFO and SFV, with just the extension on the file name changed, all referenced in the par2 file, which also has the same name)
3.64 saves the video, NFO and SFV to the directory H:\zt\A.Really.Nifty.Video, so after the unrar the folder H:\zt\A.Really.Nifty.Video contains the files
A.Really.Nifty.Video.mp4
A.Really.Nifty.Video.sfv
A.Really.Nifty.Video.nfo
My question is how do I duplicate this behavior with 6.4? (Again, I DL from headers, not NZBs)

I installed 6.34 (to get the info for the pathing question I have) and then installed 6.40b4 and this problem has gone away <shrugs>.

This is what I think you have to do.
1 - Open the options.
2 - Check the "UnRAR Folder" thing to activate it.
3 - Click edit and pick a folder.
4 - Double-click "$(FILENAME)" to add the filename of the set to the unrar path.
See what happens.

I was stumped because you deleted the DB3 files. I was thinking it was checking whether to display the MOTD that was causing the stall.

That sort of worked. The file name was (char count is accurate, but the characters have been changed)
aaaa.bbbb.ccc.ddddddd.eeeeeeeeeeeee.fffffff.ggggggg.hhhh.iiii-jjjj.mp4
The NFO, SFV and Par2 all had the same name.
but the directory that was made was
aaaa.bbbb.ccc.ddddddd
Is there a limiter on the directory name length, and if there is, can it be adjusted?
It did put the SFV and NFO in that directory.

There is currently a limit but, I've already removed it for the next beta.

It seems $(GROUP) uses the short name of the newsgroup? but when I add 1 character in front of $(GROUP) the path gets expanded to the full groupname?
Example:
Z:\Download\$(GROUP)\$(NZBFILE)\ shows as:
Z:\Download\a.b.sample\Sample\
But when I add a 1 before, the results becomes this:
Z:\Download\1$(GROUP)\$(NZBFILE)\
Z:\Download\1alt.binaries.sample\Sample\
Is there a way to always get the full group name?

Hi there back again,
The problem NB stops downloading/writing to disk still occurs but with further testing i now have a stable NB 6.4b4.
I can get it stable when i don't do any kind of sorting in the download list maybe this points you in the right direction
Regards,
Jan

Even when you do this you still have to manually type in the download path/drive letter you want in front of the "$NZBFILE" otherwise it will not work. There should be a way to avoid having to do that like before when it would automatically download in the main folder.

If you don't enable the NZB download path, it'll use the main download folder. The NZB folder is optional. If you add "NZBFILE" to the regular download path, it's ignore if there are no NZB's.
If it doesn't work then it's just a bug that needs fixing.
I'm not completely clear what you're doing to, if you explain it to me, I might see what's going on.

Before if I chose the option to download to a folder the same name as the NZB it would automatically put everything in the main download folder. In this version if I choose the $(NZBFILE) option it doesn't choose a main download folder so I had to manually type in the folder in front of $(NZBFILE) for example typing C:\ in front of $(NZBFILE) when you click "edit path". Until I did this it would start downloading but then the downloads would just stop. I just wanted to mention that because I think some people mentioned they were having problems downloading to folders the same name as the NZB.

That's what the 'Browse' button is for, next to the Edit. It let's you specify the location, Edit let's you tweak that path with variables, should you desire. Maybe this is a valid issue, might be confusing for some if you make a beeline for the edit button. I wonder if it's as simple as swapping the buttons? I tend to go from left to right myself. Or maybe Browse on the left, Edit on the right of the path?

Ok, Thx for pointing that out. It didn't occur to me that you could use the "edit" option after using the "browse" button.
