Version 6.30 Beta 5 Available...

Beta 5 has a new Sample mode accessible from the Download and Files tabs. After at least one .rar file downloads in a rar set, you can select this option to view what you have so far. Beta 5 also includes many bug fixes and better support for non-English characters in posts.
Highlights:
- New Sample mode implemented.
- AutoPAR no longer uses a database on disk during processing. Only writes out to disk to save state now.
- Better UTF-8 support for non-English characters in posts.
- Fixed a couple of esoteric crash and hang issues.
Many more changes and bug fixes along with the download link is on the
Newsbin Beta Page.
Any issues with this release, please reply to this thread, contact us through our

B5 is crashing when I 'Mark Post Old' in local search. Happens with display settings set to 'Hide Old' , but doesn't crash with display settings set to 'None'. On Win XP 32 bit fully updated.

Same here, did it every time I tried to 'mark as old'.
Have gone back 1 step, can't live with that happening...

Crashes when r-click and Delete All From Poster-- most of the time.. unless only two or three items.. more makes it happen.
XP SP2, 32bit, 2.66 Ghz, 3GB ram

It is a much more general problem than I first reported. Any operation (mark post old, delete post, delete all posts from poster, etc.) that would cause an item to be removed from the last (bottom) screen of a post list (group post list or local search) causes B5 to crash. It doesn't have to be the last item in the list, it just has to be on the bottom screen of the list. The problem is so general I've also gone back to B4.

Just some info for you.
I posted a while back about when deleting 10,000 posts or more(spam) I was left with a list of lines saying deleted - with this beta I got rid of 40,000 with no problems using 'delete all posts from poster' in about a second. Thanks.
I am not having any of the problems as the above posters - Vista 32 bit - but my setup is just to have a single pane and everything is tabbed across the top - hth.

Yeah, I tested the crap out of deletion. I'm not sure why they're having problems yet.

Hmm. Kairk, I'm unable to repro that delete all from user causing a crash thing. I make sure I have the same user on the last displayed post on the bottom, then select another post from the same person, delete all from user, and it's fine. I even tried the actual one on the bottom. I do know you can slide the post list so it's not entirely clear what the absolutely last one is, if you vertically alter the height of the post list, does it change things? I'm running win7 64.
On re-reading, I'm a little unclear what you mean. You said it doesn't have to be on the bottom, can you re-word what you mean? "it just has to be on the bottom screen of the list" doesn't mean anything to me.

Easy way to reproduce: In local search, search for something that produces less that one screens worth of results. i.e. there is no scroll bar on the right. With the display mode set to 'hide old', mark something old. B5 will crash.
Another way to reproduce: Do 'Show Posts' on a group, and then page down to the bottom of the list. i.e. the scroll bar on the right is at the bottom. Select any line/lines on the list and do "mark post old" (display mode set to 'hide old') or "delete post" or "delete all posts from poster". B5 will crash. You can choose the very last item in the list to get it to crash, but it doesn't have to be the last item. It just has to be an item on the last page of the list.
For me, B5 will crash every time under these conditions.

Dex was able to reproduce it but, only on 32 bit XP. Win7, both 32 and 64 it doesn't crash.
I'll have to figure some way to trouble-shoot it in a VM I guess.

So far on this Beta 5, if I do an internet search and then right click to download to new folder, I never get the selection box. If I select, download to subject based folder name, it works just fine. Everything else seems to work as expected. This is happening on my Win 7 Ultimate 64bit box.
BTW, when not using UnRAR, are there any plans to turn off the Retry: Next Retry thing?

Have a fix for the XP crashing and "Download to New Folder" I'm going to give Dex a B6 version to play with tonight.
We'll start testing and try to turn this around into the forum pretty quickly.

Anyone had incomplete RAR's downloaded where NB only grabs the first chunk and not the whole file?
Had this happen twice now since using B5, first download I deleted as there were more missing blocks than PAR2's posted but the second time I noticed that only the first chunk had been saved yet there were no errors in the logging tab? Re-downloaded them using the Bypass filters option and they downloaded complete, nothing has changed on my system only the upgrade from B4 to B5, just weird!!

I have attempted the last 3 betas but I am unable to use any of them. I am able to download new headers but when I try to show new posts the application stops responding and crashes.
I am running the 64-bit version on Windows 7 64bit within VMware Fusion 4.1. It is my bootcamp partition so when I boot directly to Windows 7, it works fine.

Servers in use aren't shown.
Re-install of beta 4 helps.
Noticed on PC and laptop.

Weird. Servers are in the nbi file, so if you're getting your other settings, the servers are there. Any possibility you're not using the same nbi?

There's only one .nbi file on my computer.
C:\Users\Edward\AppData\Local\Newsbin\Newsbin.nbi
So it must the same, never changed or removed it.

So assuming you've actually looked at that file and have verified the servers are in there, then it sounds like some sort of graphics glitch. Not sure what to do next, you need to figure out why you're getting different behaviour from everyone else, or wait until someone else finds this behaviour too.
So, with the latest, nothing shows up in that list, but it still works? Downloads still happen?
Btw, if you haven't done it already, back up that nbi file. You really need to have safety backups, and if, as you say, there's only a single nbi on the entire computer, that means you have no backup apart from the quick backup newsbin does.

When you're back, can you check and see if you have any non-ascii group names, or anything at all in the nbi that isn't straight ascii? That's a theory being suggested...

DThor, I checked the nbi file and I can't find any strange things.
So, here is the nbi-file. Accountnames and passwords are removed.
As you can see, I don't use any groups.
Downloads work fine, even when the servers aren't shown.
Logfile shows that the servers are being contacted.

@Edward: Your problem exist becourse i think you install the dutch language pack of 6.20. If i do that i can reproduce the problem (options tab is empty too). If you install whitout the languagepack everything is as it should be. Allot of icons are changed.

It wasn't really turning on before. It said it was turning on but, in fact it wasn't. You have to be administrator to enable this mode.

Just upgraded to B5 from 6.21 and get a crash whenever I try and a group.
Cant see any logging or cause for this. Tried reinstalling didn't help. Happened on any group not just a specific one.
Win7 64bit version.
Reverting to 6.21 fixed the problem.
Probably not much help as a bug report but something wrong in the loading of groups somewhere

Beta 5 is giving me an interesting bug. I am unable to Download to New Folder anymore. I can right click on the New Folder menu item but nothing happens after that. Newsbin restarts and reboots have not solved the issue. Dowloading to new folders is no longer functional. I can still Download to an Existing Folder, and even right click inside that to create a new folder to use as the existing one (which is how I am getting by). I haven't seen anyone else mention this but it's definitely new to Beta 5.
