Version 6.30 Beta 4 Available...

Many bug fixes and changes are in Beta 4. The coolest thing is the new Growl support that Quade built in on a whim after one of our long time users, DThor, suggested it on the IRC channel. Read up on
Growl and consider using it to have Newsbin notify you when items complete downloading, or when Newsbin is started or stopped, either on your machine or any device with an IP address. Growl was developed for OSX but there is a
Windows version too.
There are way too many fixes and changes to list in this post but here's a quick summary:
- Growl support for notifications
- NZB load filter now acts as a filter profile for NZB files loaded to the post list.
- Enhancements to the Remote Control Interface
- Performance improvements
- More work on UTF-8 support throughout the program
- Different behavior when AutoPAR is disabled.
- Better integrity checking of the AutoPAR database
Details about all the changes and bug fixes, and the download link is on the
Newsbin Beta Page.
Any issues with this release, please reply to this thread, contact us through our
Technical Support Form or swing by our irc channel - #newsbin on irc.newsbin.com.

What does [07:44:05] HIGH - Par2Repair - Single-core 1.0 mean in the logging? I have a Six-core processor, so I was just wondering if it was related to that?

Is it AMD? The code in the installer that recognizes multi-core cpu's doesn't seem to work right for AMD

Hi everyone,
Still issue with boneless...45Gig .db3 file!!! since jan 04th, no more headers updates...
I erased all and click "download all headers" then it stops at 15gig again
Newsbin seems download but "storage" files don't grow anymore (only range files)
Am I the only one with this problem?
I use the 64bits newbin version.
Thanks in advance
Best regards,
Nicolas

Hmm, well if you've decided to keep a local copy of the largest(and most spam-filled) group on usenet, that qualifies you for leading edge. I must admit, though, 45G strikes me as a little small to start having catastrophic errors, but then I don't know your system specs and what operations you tried to do with it.
You should be getting some sort of message in the logging tab when you try to update headers, if there's an error. It's possible that, yes, the spool is corrupted, or yup, you've hit some sort of ceiling. I do know that Quade does some pretty serious torture testing on his local test rig, however.

Thanks for your answer
Now I've a new problem: When I click "download all headers" only 444000000 are downloading. usually, it was 4400000000 !!!
I think I'll use binsearch for downloading things contained in this group
Have a nice day

Yeah, that's recommended. boneless is the torture test group of usenet.

Yeah, boneless should work. What server are you using? What kind of disk drive is the DB sitting on?
Will there be a fix for that?
Dex is probably going to put the repair files up on the website so, you can download them and update you newsbin manually. At least that's what we discussed.

I've uploaded the multi-core par dll files so you can force them into place. Grab either the 32 or 64 bit as needed and put them in the folder where Newsbin is installed. You'll also need the tbb.dll out of either the 32 or 64 bit folders within the rar file.

I did a search on Growl on this forum and this was the only thread on it, but are there directions on how I might get this to work with VMware Fusion running Newsbin and MAC OSX Growl? I apologize if my search was inadequate and I missed it.
Thanks.

I wasn't able to test against MacOSX
What parts do you need help with? Maybe the easiest thing would be to get it working on the PC side with "Growl for Windows" and then try changing the address to the mac running the server. Now's a good time to do it, while 6.3 is still in beta.

I've tested with Newsbin running in an XP VM and growl running on Mac OSX. It works and wasn't complicated to set up. You just need the IP of the machine growl is running on and go through the registration process from within Newsbin in Options/Notification options. Only tricky part might be if you are running firewalls on your internal network.

Appreciate the feedback.
It's not clear to me why it was crashing. Dthor found a crash generating issue selecting "None" in the filter profiles but, I didn't think that bug made it out into the wild. Maybe I'm wrong.
Edit: Another major change is in how I build it. I found that turning on maximum optimizations broke the 64 bit version is subtle ways. Maybe it was messing up 32 bits too.

So I'm running a Win7 VM in NAT mode. If I open up a CMD within the VM, I see the local IPv4 address as 192.168.30.128 with a gateway of 192.168.30.2 (which I assume the Mac OSX host)?
I configure the Mac OSX side to accept incoming stuff, give it a password.
I go to Newsbin and configure the Growl Server address (192.168.30.2) and also the growl password that I configred in the OSX side.
I click Growl Register and it returns "Unable to Register with Grown Server".
So several questions. If the 192.168.30.2 address correct or am I supposed to be using my actual IPv4 address that I'm deriving from DHCP for my outside machine? If that's the case, how do you configure it so it works all the time with DHCP? It'll be constantly changing for me.
You mentioned Firewall. Are you referring to the Win7 VM side that I need to do something or the OSX side?
Thanks!
PS - The issue with unRAR not cleaning up S0* files is present in Beta 4 too
.

You have to use the IP address of the machine running Growl. I don't believe the gateway address is it.
The normal way to get around address changes is to use DNS. If your mac had a DNS address "mac.home.com" or something, you could enter that instead of the IP address. You'd have to make sure the VM is able to resolve this address though.
On my network, DHCP never changes the address of my machines. It just issues the same address for each machine every time they come up. I assume it's tracking the MAC address and that's how it decides.
PS - The issue with unRAR not cleaning up S0* files is present in Beta 4 too
I'll have to figure some way to simulate it.

In this case, I think the gateway address should be it as the VM is NATted behind the Gateway so it would like this.
Win7 VM -> Gateway (Mac OSX machine) -> Internet
The VM has to go through the Mac.
In my case, the DHCP addresses does change. I have 3 different networks that the Newsbin machine routinely connects to.
1 - My home network 192.168.1.xx
2 - My VPN network at home for work 10.x.x.x
3 - My office at work which is different from the first 2. It's a globally routed address.
So I couldn't use a DNS name either.

Lets keep it simple. Disconnect the VPN to work, find out what IP's the MAC has and what ports it's listening to.
On a Linux box I'd "ifconfig"
and "netstat -ant"
Growl listens on port 23053. You should see that listed in the netstat.
Ifconfig should tell you what your macs IP address is. That's the address you want to plug into Newsbin.
I switched one of my VM's to NAT

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : localdomain

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.242.2
C:\Documents and Settings\Quade>ping 10.0.1.5

Reply from 10.0.1.5: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Packets: Sent = 2, Received = 2, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms
10.0.1.5 is the machine VMWare is running on. This is the same thing you need to do. Get the IP of the machine the growl server is working on.

I tried every address that was shown in my mac terminal. I can ping any of those addresses. Where did you get the 10.0.1.5 address from? I see your ifconfig output but not how you derived the 10.0.1.5 from your output. If it was in ifconfig then I've tried every address listed and I selected one that pinged just fine.

At this point I'd install something on the mac that uses Growl and configure it to log to the mac. Once you have that working, mapping it to Newsbin should be fairly easy.
Edit: I changed my VM to use NAT. I copied Newsbin to the VM. Went onto the options and put on 10.0.1.5 for the address and my growl password and it worked. At this point you might want to see if you can get Growl to actually log anything.

Growl on my Mac works already. I've got other applications that talk to it and presents notifications on my screen.
In the VM, there's only one IPv4 address and that doesn't seem to work for me. I've also tried every IP address that could possibly be on the Mac. I just use the Networks connections to shows what active. FW is turned off on the Mac for me.
The address given in the VM is 192.168.30.2. It's the ONLY address given so it has to be it.
The Newsbin log/popup says "ERROR: InterSocket - Error: Socket Open Failed, Host: 192.168.30.2 Eorror Code: 10061: No Connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.
I'm guessing its something in my VM itself but no idea where. Growl already shows up in the Windows Firewall as being allowed.
I don't see Newsbin in the Applications tab if I'm running a local copy of Growl in the VM either.

I assume you're running this release. Some indication of what you're doing would save a lot of time. Auto downloading everything, trying to load all of boneless into memory, etc. It would have to be a fair bit to go as high as you're suggesting. I assume you mean 2G.

It mostly depends on what you have loaded into the posts lists and how large the download list is.
If you load up a number of large groups, this isn't really that unusual. Tell me more about when it happens and I'll see what I think about it.
