ERROR - Resolver: Unable to open Source Data file

Hello, I upgraded to ver 6 64bit (registered user) and now when I download headers from any of the groups from my groups list, I get the topic error message
(i.e. ERROR - Resolver: Unable to open Source Data file).

All folders and files (spool V_1 & V_6, images, loaded, Read posts, Temp an other files in a "nutshell") from ver. 5 is located at: "D:\Users\Dan\AppData\Local\NewsBin".

In ver. 5 I had no error message like I get now.

Could you explain the error message an also how to fix it? TIA!

(i.e. ERROR - Resolver: Unable to open Source Data file).

This means there are no existing records to load into the post list. That the group is starting from scratch. The process of importing 5.59 headers is manual. It's done from the group right click "Post Storage/Import 5.59 headers". You might want to try importing a group to see how it works.

If you double-click a group with no headers in it, to trigger a download and a load, I'd expect to see that error first time through, until some posts are placed into the spool_V6 folder.

Thanks Quade but after importing from spool_5 to Spool_6 do I still hang on to Spool_5 folder or can I delete it to save space on hhd? TIA!

Once you're done with it, you can delete. 6 doesn't use it.

I did this procedure. I no longer get the error message. I also have no headers, for groups that I knew had headers just a minute ago, before upgrading. In what sense is this "importing?" I would think an import would transfer all the old data to new data. Am I missing something?

When you did the import, did you see progress screens showing something was being imported? If so, they should be there, maybe you just aren't loading them up properly. What is your Display Age set to? How about right-clicking a group you know imported and select Show All Headers and see what happens.

I saw the progress screen flash up briefly. Maybe half second. Display Age is set to "Show All" I select Show All Headers and I get nothing. I think, given that the progress bar flashed only briefly, that the import was not successful. But it is acting like it was and no longer issuing errors. And if I go back to 5.53, everything is still there.

Is the old spool_v1 folder in the same folder as the new v6? Wondering if the data folder is different. If so, you could drag it over to the new data folder location, try again. Newsbin won't delete the old one so you can always move it back. You decide when to delete it.

They are both in the same folder already. Comparing similar newsgroups, the spool_v1 version is 5.5 MB and the imported spool_v6 version is only 120 kB. I realize it isn't an apples to apples comparison but if they contain the same data that's a 50 to 1 compression ratio.

The spool_v1 version is 5.5 MB

This means the spool_v1 folder for that group is basically empty. That's probably why import doesn't work, there's nothing to import. Right click the group, "Download all Headers" and then see what happens. On a larger group, the spool_v1 and eventually the spool_v6 can get into the GB range. It's also possible that 5.53 is too old to import to 6. Still, 5 Mb means either the group data got wiped or that it's a tiny group and you might as well download headers instead.

Two points: it isn't completely empty, since I can view new headers in 5.53. So *something* should have imported. And if it is losing headers on a small group, what will happen on a larger one, where the difference might be more difficult to detect?

Re-downloading might be reasonable on this group but would be a pain on large ones.

Well, you don't have any large ones, right? The import is working for most, although personally I just re-downloaded. Not sure what's going on in your case, but with all your spools totaling that size, really, you should just re-download. It's not very much time or data.

All my spools don't total that size. That is for a single test newsgroup. The full spool_v1 folder, including all groups, is 12.5 GB.

I don't even know if 5.53 to 6 import works so, you're right, it might not be working at all.

Import was tested with 5.59. It might have worked and you've got all the results filtered out. There's no way for me to know. I know import is working for many other people and import works for me so, you're sort of the outlier here.

Maybe try another group and see what happens?

The only reason I can think of why it's failing is because the spools in v5.53 are rv3 but the importer in v6 are looking for rv4 spools.

I had that problem myself but I ended up downloading all headers instead.

There you go. Yeah, RV3's files won't import. If you install 5.59, let IT import, then import with 6 it'll probably work.

Me, I'd just re-download.

Hah! Yes, I found the 5.59 download link last night and installed it to try this very strategy. I'm glad to know it will actually work. Thanks all!
