This release adds a couple of new features and fixes some more bugs.

Summary:

  • You can now type a group in to the Search in Groups dropdown in addition to selecting a Group Folder
  • Added Windows 7 task bar integration. Progress is now reported in the task bar icon and dwelling over the icon gives you some options.
  • Logging messages now spell out socket errors in addition to giving the socket error number.
  • Made a number of bug fixes

More details about these and other changes are on the Newsbin Beta Page, along with the download link.

quite a few groups have long names. and it seems that Groups dropdown field doesnt allow you to type in more than XX symbols thus making it impossible to search within a specified group.

Good point, I'll note it.

Repairing works kinda strange..

CPUs cores are almost not used during the whole process => its slow..really slow compared to other newsreader that fully utilizes my cores. Is there a hidden setting that tells NB to fully use CPU during repair process?

It is always less than 2-3%

Get faster disks (or possibly more memory)?
Repair should be almost entirely I/O-bound on a decent CPU...

ctrl+v does not work in the Filename field of the "Download To New Folder" dialog.

ctrl+c still does not work in the Subject field of the "Post Properties" dialog.

Deleting workspace.xml does not help.

Im sorry but you are wrong

If you didnt know PAR2 repair process depends mostly on CPU\how many core one's got.
writing to disk is minimal, memory ( we are talking here about having 3+Gb memory) is not a factor at all.

And for some reason NB doesnt use my CPU almost at all(several %) resulting in __comparison with another newsreader that fully utilize CPU or just simple quickpar repair__ in much more slower repair process..

Please, dont give me this "get more memory, decent cpu".
Ive got more than enough memory and CPU power which IS NOT USED AT ALL by nb6 while repairing.
Meaning my CPU is almost idle because i dont consider 1-2% as a sign of using it That is plain wrong
I didnt have that on NB5pro

im just stating that it shouldnt be so and asked if there was a hidden setting to make nb6 utilize full CPU power

Yeah, I've noted these. You can right-click and use copy or paste from that menu as a workaround.

My CPU's spike. Still, on a 2 core system, it'll only use one core. The par repair lib knows how many cores you have and by default uses cores/2. That's so there's some cores left for other processing like downloading.

...but _reading_ from disk is heavy. You cannot solve the matrices for a damaged block w/o having the corresponding data in memory. If your CPU is idle, it is likely waiting for disk. (newsbin's repair process might only use one core, but unless you are on a 48-core machine, that should still amount to more than 2%:-))

Thats the problem. I have 2 cores. And they never spike while NB repairs. It is never more tha 1-3% CPU usage per core

If your CPU is idle, it is likely waiting for disk.

Funny how QuickPar(! which uses single core only by design) and other newsreaders dont "wait" for disk though :)
Besides, it behaves like this both on SSD and HDD.=))

PS Updated.. Just tried another file.. and it got repaired OK....dunno why these two i had didnt use CPU properly..

we'll look into it

PPS

Nb crashed again when i was selecting a folder where i wanted to save stuff
+ ive just finished downlaoding 6+Gb file+repairing and unpacking
logging(555 entries)
..
[04:49:30] ERROR - FileIOThread - internal crash
[04:49:30] ERROR - FileIOThread - internal crash
[04:49:30] ERROR - FileIOThread - internal crash
[04:49:30] ERROR - FileIOThread - internal crash
....
i dont really get what does it mean.. nb seemed to work fine..

I'm seeing repeated crashes on B12 during multi-file downloads. Win7 64 bit, quad core 8gb memory. Log shows nothing much other than duplicate detections. I'll try to narrow down circumstances.

Also, old headers are still appearing-- thought this was fixed in B12?

The crashing and old headers might be related. I'm not getting either one.

Is it possible that in the Download List to see the status of all of the files in the download like in Version 5? I would like to switch between the full listing and the the compacted listing.

Click on the arrow and it'll expand the listing.

No more crashing. Don't think the old headers are related. Not sure how others eliminate old headers, but I ctl-a to select all headers and hit del key. Next time I startup and download latest headers by dbl-clicking GOG, I see previous downloads with the green icon showing it's been downloaded, along with a bunch of the old headers alongside them.

Suggestions?

1 - Do you have a header overlap set (Server options)?

2 - How many servers are you downloading headers from?

Either one of these things can make posts "new" again. Anything that downloads headers out of sync or downloads old headers over again.

- Zero overlap
- One server (astraweb SSL)

The header sort still isn't fixed.
i.e.

"A silly header"
"This is a silly header"
(Second one
An other silly header

instead of

"A silly header"
An other silly header
(Second one
"This is a silly header"

This was added a while ago in V5 when I asked for it.
