Version 6 Beta 9 Available...

Lots more cosmetic fixes and some functional changes in this one.

Summary:

  • Hooked up a number of options that were in menus but were not hooked up.
  • Changes to how retries work and when incomplete files get assembled
There are too many small things that were addressed to really make a good summary, it's better to just get the details from the Newsbin Beta Page where you'll find the download link, too.

Quade is working on getting the search function back in the Download list that exists in 5.59.

Autodownload via filters while stuff is being uploaded still doesnt work

Image
This is supposed to be 2x800mb files. Instead Nb has a mess in download window.
They just stay there forever =( nothing happens. Files are complete.

I didnt quite get from release notes if this issue was addressed in the new beta so i decided to post this.
Sorry if it hasnt been covered yet

Works for me. You've got a crapload of incomplete files. Maybe it works for me because I'm using giga for headers right now.

Looking fine in wine - had to update to v 1.31beta to get the window positions fixed - so it was a wine issue

Deletion of post seems to take FOREVER
I was removing a spammer from one of my GoG's and to remove 30000 posts is taking 30min +
Update:-
took 45 minutes to delete 20K posts
Then did a lock out poster and it removed 11K in a few seconds - guess I will be using this in the future :D

if you delete from a right click it is the equivalent of a shift+del so it will remove them from the spool, lockout poster just hides them i think

True but why so long it seemed like 2 posts a second it was so slow moving down the screen. I would suggest that delete first update screen later maybe a better way to do this ?

again this possibly could be a wine issue or it might be something slow in the removal of the posts from the db3 file

Yeah, I can do 1000's of deletes a second. Wonder if you have background database inserts going at the same time? Still, that shouldn't slow the display that much.

No update going on, NB the only thing running really (FF & TB open but not downloading anything)
I had 3 GoG tabs open and was deleting from one of them - Very SLOWLY as I said 45min to delete 20K of posts.

Might be a wine issue again but as I don't have a M$ system to try it on ...

Newsbin does database inserts in the background after a header download so, just because it's not downloading, that doesn't mean the inserts aren't happening.

Ok it had been about 5 min since I had done a header update, no noticeable HDD activity before I deleted the headers and little then, I will try again when I get some more spam

OK today’s spammer has 10K posts. (same newsgroups)
Right click choose lock out poster and it is taking 10+ minutes to delete these posts. Mark old = immediate delete long time.
Checked the processor activity before - idling during delete 60% no additional memory/swap used (Running at 1.5Gb out of 3Gb of real Ram)
This was after downloading the headers about 5 minutes before idling since then.
No real HDD activity either.

If this is just a wine issue then I will have to live with it.

I just did a delete all posts from poster around 20k posts and it took 4-5 sec , so my guess would be wine.

Yeah, I've been leaning in that direction too but, other people use it under wine and don't seen to see this. Maybe some other Linux people can chime in. Dude on the IRC channel running linux, seems to have locked down his data folder so, the download list doesn't save on exit. Weird stuff like that is sort of expected, running a beta, under Linux.

The symptom for me, which is critical to indicate, is that the *scrolling* is what's brutal. Selecting all posts, doing some sort of automated process like this, will murder you, depending on the release of newsbin and the version of wine. It's absolutely a redraw issue, and in one form or another I've seen it since mid-v5 days. Redraw == wine issue.

My guess is if windows ran at an unthinkably slow speed, you'd see the same thing, a post getting deleted, the page redraw, it scrolls up by one, it redraws...repeat until end of time.

I stopped doing anything involving large selections of posts a long time ago. A couple of internal releases, probably before this new GUI code, it seemed to go away. I'm not sure what could be done on Quade's end to deal with it...probably should be reported to the wine team. I'd suspect if you're noticing stuff like this on wine and everyone else goes 'huh?' it's OK to take this discussion to the linux forum, in terms of updating things with the wine team, etc. Of course, they'll prob not do anything until it's released...

Seems already downloaded posts get re-downloaded if accidently tagged again.

Also, do failed files in the Failed list stay there even if you click the post in the post list and it then downloads without issue?

Nothing gets removed from the failed list till you remove it.

If the file is still on disk, the first chunk is downloaded and then the file is verified. The whole thing doesn't download. If it's not on disk, the duplicate checker will catch it.

Shouldn't the Failed list be linked to the download status though so it gets cleared after a failed file is successfully downloaded?

The re-downloading issue works on large files, I think it's images where it downloads it again, maybe because some images only have one chunk?

One chunk is the minimum it always downloads but, the dup checker works on the first chunk. If you add the same file to the download list that was already added, it will re-download at least on chunk.

As for the failed list, I just clear the whole thing from time to time. Typically it's just dups anyway.

It does help to have 'Use Duplicate Detector' ticked

The value of the duplicate detector feature grows along with the growing number of internet service providers who have started capping bandwidth.

As a matter of fact, that feature, and the use of description.ion files are why I use Newsbin Pro. I do miss file descriptions being written as metadata to the Windows file system, as its often hard to find source and descriptive information about automatically unrared image files found on my hard drive.

Duplicate's not going anywhere. I use it all the time, too.
