Version 6.00 B2 Available...

Beta 2 is now available. A number of bugs found in B1 have been addressed as well as a few new features. Here's a short summary:

  • Added option for Newsbin to detect and reject RAR sets that are password protected.
  • Fixed issue launching NZB's from IE8
  • Added a refresh button to AutoPAR properties screen (right-click on a rar/par set in the Download list)
  • Added ability to decrease priority of par repair processing.
There are many many other changes that are listed on the Newsbin Beta Page and in the text release notes that are available to you after the installer completes the upgrade.

The wiki buglist reflects current known issues and the list of fixed issues. This does not include inter-release issues that are found and addressed on the IRC channel.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page

I created a test NZB where I removed one rar. I turned off unRAR, but left AutoPAR on.

Newsbin grabbed the .nfo, .sfv, .par2, and .srr, but skipped the RARs altogether. Nothing was downloaded.

I added the same nzb to nzbget and it grabbed everything and repaired the collection.

I did the same thing, deleted 2 files and it worked fine.

I also tried the NZB with sabnzbd -- that also downloaded and repaired OK.

Here's the NZB: http://rapidshare.com/files/448328110/s ... 212031.nzb

Hmmm... I just tried loading it in to Newsbin for a third time and it worked. Odd. On that third time, I double-clicked the NZB, I didn't drop it in the autoload folder. I'll try that again.

i used the autoload folder with an nzb missing a single rar and it repaired

Well, it downloaded the rars, then tried to download a par and then sat there doing nothing. I tried "Assemble incompletes". Nothing.

EDIT: It repaired the files, but I didn't see the yellow bar and the files were not removed from the list (as you can see in the screenshot).

I turned off unRAR, but left AutoPAR on.

Still? If so then that's what it's supposed to do. Turn off unrar and the files will sit there waiting for you do do something with them.

Did you turn on "Fail Encrypted Files"?

Repair the damaged files. And not unRAR. Why aren't the files removed from the download list? They've been downloaded. This is what every other usenet app does!

i think it is there because there are users who do not use autopar because it deleted the rars and pars and they want them to archive along with the actual file, its doing what it should, but i do think it should remove the entry from the list

OK, I just attempted another one -- a different collection this time. Exactly the same problem as the first time.

I created an NZB from Newzbin, selecting all files in the collection apart from one (to test the par repair function). The NZB was packaged in a zip and saved directly to the Autoload folder.

Again, Newsbin grabbed everything apart from the rars. It even grabbed the sample. There's something weird going on here. Again, Autopar on, unRAR off. I've been using Newsbin and NewZbin for a long time. Many many moons. :D

I'm willing to believe there's something wrong. Not really getting enough feedback to guess what though. I'd exit, delete all the DB3 files in the data folder and try again.

Well... at least now it doesnt drop speed to zero when unraring+downloading. Just to 2-3MB from 10.5-11MB

And it still does par2 verification on the fly for the second job while the first one is active..thats where the bottleneck is.
we need INI option to disable par2 verification on the fly for the next item that is being downloaded while the previous one is getting unrared\repaired,that is. Like the one introduced in this beta(repair=1)
if it is possible, than that would be nice. Those who doesnt need it, they wouldnt even know about it existence, Poor folks like me on the other hand could utilize it lol

I have an idea. Go into the Autopar options and select "Fail Encrypted Files" and try again.

Edit: I just tried that and it made no difference

OK, deleted all DB3s, tried third collection with one rar missing. Same problem. It did download a subs.rar file -- maybe it doesn't like having a rar missing.

Turned on "Fail Encrypted files". Fourth different collection tried (with one rar missing). Exact same problem.

RE: Why we would turn off unRAR and/or Autopar -- some of us download 45GB rar collections every day. Often we know or suspect that the rars will be damaged. So, we download with Newsbin (it's fast and powerful) and use Quickpar in Monitor mode with AutoRepair off -- this lets me monitor the state of the files. If there are damaged files, I can try other NZB sites for more complete sources or look for reposts or whatever. Auto-repairing a very damaged, large collection can take hours, and tie up a PC. Doing things manually lets me keep control over the process.
For smaller collections (up to around 5 or 10GB), I'm happy to let my client do all the work.

Yeah, I don't care why you turn it off. I stopped asking "why" years ago. If you want it to clear the download list after download then that'll have to be another option. Lots of people turn off autopar, like to let the downloads collect, then unrar when they feel like it.

PM me the subject of this collection and tell me which one you delete and I'll look at it specifically. Maybe it's one of those screwy "Camel Systems" posts with a bad first Edit: "PAR"

You know another thing you could try is delete the file AND delete the smallest PAR2 and see if the symptoms change. The small par2's posted by "Camel Systems Poster" are bad. Maybe I broke the bad par filter.

And another thing,

I would like to suggest the following:

"Unpack\Repair Task: [custom speed limit (KB)]"

When something gets unrared\repaired NBpro limits speed to the one specified by the user.

That could also help if the solution proposed by me earlier doesnt help somebody

At the very least it would prevent disk from trashing in auto-mode without making user to pause\unpause nbpro's downloads manually

I see it neil. It's actually not the repair. It's an artifact of the NFO and SFV's being covered by the PAR file.

I'm thinking just the opposite Semel. Throttle the unrar to permit the network speed to run full blast. People with uber machines would get full speed unrars, people with lesser machines will get slower unrar but, high speed downloads.

I just downloaded a 4.4 GB file and noticed that, on the bottom status bar, the time remaining did not decrease until the whole file was downloaded and the amount of download remaining did not decrease until the file downloaded and was decoded. In the download pane, the file download progress bar was working.

ywah it doesnt yet, it was like that in b1 aswell, it uses the size of the compact set and keeps the time accordingly

It sounds Ok in theory =)

But custom autospeed limiter or even pause during unrar\repair sounds like a nice feature to have maybe at some point in the distant future after all the essensial stuff is done nevertheless imho
For those ones who cares deeply about their drives
But do whatever you see fit.

If you select a single rar in a rar set in a post list (from groups or nzb), it shows the size of the entire rar set in the status bar. If you select 2 rars from the rar set, it shows twice the size of the entire rar set in the status bar. If you select 3 rars from a rar set .... (I think you get the picture).

First of all, I'm really loving the new v6 GUI. You have really brought the user interface out of the stone ages & no longer has that Windows For Workgroups v3.11 feel about it. ;)

Awhile back, Quade, I had made a suggestion to you that I'd love to see a way to exclude files with certain file extensions from download (why NZB sites insist on including the posted NZB in with the NZB they create is beyond me and if I'm downloading a movie of some sort I don't need to download the preview-avi as well) and you had stated that it sounded like a good idea, but that it would have to wait till a new version or v6 was under development so.....consider this your polite reminder/request for this feature again, pretty please. :)

I'm really enjoying v6 and there do not seem to be very many bugs in it as far as I can tell thus far. I wish I could weigh in on the RAR/PAR/unRAR conversation, but with an i7-930 setup feeding a 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Black (that has its own dual-core processor...I just can't get over that!) I'm not seeing too many of the bottlenecks and performance hits others are seeing. However, to be fair, a good portion of the time I queue up all my downloads and wander away from the PC till they are done anyway.

Oh, before I forget....the built-in access to QuickPar is friggin' brilliant! I flipped when I first saw that spring into action.

The only way I can see Newsbin getting better is if it were to be able to interface with the search engines of other NZB web sites like NewzBin, NZBMatrix, and their adult counterparts, but I can see how you may not want to do that as it might cut into your revenue stream.

Just keep up the great work Dex & Quade. I love NewsBin.

How about the Global filename filters?

Thanks for the kind words. B2 IS sort of borked though.

Same problem here.
I used 5.55 and 5.59 version without any problem of this kind ...

after an "assemble incompletes", files are repaired, but still in the list.

Do you have "automatically unrar..." set in autopar? If not, the files will sit there will you delete them by hand. If you do, then you could try unpausing one of the other pars and see if that kick starts the unrar.

I wasn't kidding when I said this either. Been working on a B3 to address the B2 problems among other things.

Another bug I think.
When newsbin is reduced and I double clic on its icon, i need to enter the password twice. ;)

This is probably a side-0effect orf the fact that you now only need to single-click to restore Newsbin. I agree, however, that a double-click sgould still be allowed.

1 - Already fixed the password thing on tray icon click. It's in B3 (someone reported it the other day).

2 - If you don't have pars, it doesn't matter what the unrar setting is. Newsbin'll wait for you to decide what to do with the files. It used to go ahead and unrar the files and be done with it but, this damaged downloads that hadn't been completely uploaded yet. It's better this way. In B3, when you try to manually unrar from the download list, it'll tell you if the files are corrupt or not when it's unraring. Since you don't have pars, that's the only way to know if the files are any good. It's how you unrar encrypted files too (also in B3).

Did a quick test and this build correctly joins split files, .001 .002 .003 etc, tried a split AVI and it joined the first 3 parts correctly, however all the parts were left in the download list and didn't remove themselves after download.

Also 'retry downloads' doesn't appear to work in the download list!
