Can't launch NZB files from Windows Explorer.

Postby Moondawgie » Fri Apr 17, 2015 11:20 am

With Newsbin Pro Version 6.60B9, the procedures for opening a post tab, or tabs for NZB files in Newsbin by launching or double clicking files with the .nzb file name extension displayed with Windows Explorer, or dragging and dropping them onto Newsbin, as outlined in the NZB File Processing section of the Newsbin Wiki for Newsbin Version 6.60 aren't working. At least not for me with my installation of Newsbin Pro.

If memory serves, double-clicking, an NZB file listed in Windows Explorer, or dragging and dropping an NZB file listed in Windows Explorer used to open a post tab, or tabs in Newsbin Pro allowing the manual selection of the files in an NZB file. But that's not working now. There is no reaction at all to the double-clicking.

I've verified that the .nzb file extension is associated with Newsbin Pro in the Windows 8.1 Default Programs -> Set Associations panel.

The settings in the [Nzb] and [NZB_Files] sections of my Newsbin.ini file are as follows

Code: Select all
[Nzb]
DownloadPath=F:\NB-NZB\$(NZBFILE)\
NZB_DD_Autoload=1
NZB_LoadSingle=1
NZB_PathClean=1
NZB_PathCleanRE=^(\d+_)|(msgid_\d+_)
PathOverride=1

[NZB_Files]
ColumnDir=1
ColumnSort=3
EnableFilters=0
ShowFilenames=0
ShowFiles=0
ShowNew=1

And I've verified that the method of opening tabs for NZB files using the Newsbin Menu (File -> Load NZBs) works.

Have I simply misconfigured Newsbin?

Or have I encountered a bug or disconnected feature in Newsbin Pro Version 6.60B9?

In the NZB Options is "Download Double-Clicked NZB" checked? If so then NZB's sent to Newsbin through D&D or double-click go right to the download list. Your options suggest it's checked.

I think you have more than one problem. If D&D works but double-click doesn't it suggests an association problem or some other browser weirdness. With Newsbin shutdown, what happens if you double-click an NZB?

Yes. But NZBs aren't being sent to Newsbin when double-clicked in Windows Explorer.

However, double-clicking NZBs in the Newsbin File List Tab are being added to the Downloading Files Tab and processed correctly.

Nothing happens when I double click an NZB (in Windows Explorer).

And I've again verified in the Windows 8.1 Set Associations panel that .nzb files are associated with Newsbin, as evidenced by this screen capture.

I first noticed the problem while running with a clean install of Windows 10 64 bit Technical Preview Evaluation Bulid 9926. And the problem persisted through all subsequent, officially released builds through the current build 10049. Just yesterday, assuming that the problem was due to something with Windows 10, I wiped my drive (SSD SATA III) and installed a clean installation of Windows 8.1 and Newsbin Pro Version 6.60 B9, while keeping and using only the contents of the Newsbin Data folder located on it's own dedicated SATA III hard drive.

Incidentally, I've tried several NZB files, all of which loaded correctly when loaded using the Newsbin Menu's 'File - Load NZBs".

The problem persists, I'm stumped, and really hoped that I'd found bug in Newsbin. As it's apparently not a bug, I'll continue trying to determine the source of the problem on my own.

Thanks Quade.

If it's not starting Newsbin then you know it's a windows problem. Even if Newsbin didn't pick up the NZB, it should have started if the association was correct. I honestly don't know what to tell you. Invoking the NZB from the files list uses the same call as double-clicking it in explorer. They should be functionally identical except Newsbin is invoking the call directly.

Still suggests there's something wrong with Windows. If you have multiple versions of Newsbin installed, you need to make sure only the correct instance is invoked.

Using B10 and Win8, I double-clicked and NZB when it wasn't running. It started Newsbin and the contents of the NZB was in the download list.

That's how I remember it working in the past for me too.

I'm confident that I'll eventually find the problem.

Again, thank you.

I'd be looking at your security software. 99% of the time when some weird shit is going down that should work, it's the security software cock-blocking you.

I seem to have resolved this problem with a virgin installation of Newsbin v6.60B9

I am both pleased and amazed that after several hours of effort I was able to incorporate the files from the spool_v6 folder and sub-folders into the new installation. :mrgreen:

When I was finally done with the project I started to compare the contents of the former and the new .nbi files, but stopped when I found several lines of gibberish in the former .nbi file. I'm left with the assumption that the problem was due to a corrupted .nbi file.

I'm now in the midst of running sqlite3's VACUUM against all of the .db3 files in the subfolders of the spool_v6 folder for good measure.

It's a good day! 8)
