Slow Startup

Postby OldGuyWalking » Thu Mar 12, 2015 12:18 am

I just timed NB startup on B7 and it took 3 minutes 58 seconds from the time I clicked on the icon to the time the screen appeared. During that time CPU% for NB stayed at solid at 25% (according to Task Manager). Since I haven't seen this come up in the forum I'm going to assume it is unique to my machine but I'm not sure where to look.

I'm also having a major slow down whenever I do anything with the filters. As soon as I hit OK in the filter dialog it will also take several minutes to close and several applications I use hang until NB is done.

Windows 7
Intel i5 w/16GB RAM
No disk issues.

Any suggestions?

Newsbin was probably checking the database files. I've since removed that. Probably have to make a standalone database checker because it takes too long inline.

So anything I can do in the meantime, short of adding an SSD (which I'm going to get around to eventually). i.e. compress database files?

Thanks

How much do you have in failed, wish and download lists?

I'd probably clear the files list first and see if that fixed it. Right click clear list.

I clear the download and failed lists after each connection. I've never seen a need to retain those past the session I'm running unless I've lost power to the computer. I've used the Wish List twice in the past and both times I'd forgotten I'd saved anything to it so it is perpetually clear.

Now that it's almost Spring I think I'll do some spring cleaning and get rid of some old filters and clean out or revamp the lockout poster list. Don't know if that will help but probably won't hurt.

Thanks.

Files list is what I'm suggesting you clear. I'll bet clearing that (which doesn't delete the files) will make it snappy again.

Some people maintain 1000's of files in their download list. Collections of files they intend to download..some day.

If it's the File List tab, that's actually what I meant when I said I was clearing out download lists after every session. I use NB search almost exclusively and I don't keep anything stored in the tabs. I rarely use the Groups and I have 0 files (or lists) in any of the groups.

It may not have any relevance but I deleted 6 filters that I haven't used for awhile (probably a year or two) and I just timed NB and startup went from 3m 58s to 1m 57s.

My start-up is literally 2-4 seconds. If it takes more than 10 seconds, it's too long.

I assume by started you means loaded and all the lists loaded up?. It's not taking a minute just to show the display is it?

1 - Start Newsbin

2 - In the options select "Open Data Folder"

3 - Exit Newsbin

4 - Delete the files:
Downloaded.db3
Downloads.db3
Autopar2.db3
DownloadsV2.db3 (if it's there).

Then restart and see if it's still slow.

Timing is from the time I hit enter on the icon to the time the display shows. I deleted the files you recommended (Downloads.db3 wasn't there.)

AutoPAR2.DB3
Downloaded.db3
DownloadsV2.db3

I don't know if it's significant but after deleting the DownloadsV2.db3 file it was recreated after I restarted NB. Downloads.db3 doesn't exist in the folder.

I restarted and timed NB twice and it took about 1m 36sec both times.

Note #1 - This only became an issue after I installed this set of beta version (I think I started with B3 maybe). Before that startup time was minimal.

Note #2 - On the off-chance that it had anything to do with the lockout posters file (because we had this conversation a few months ago) I went ahead and zero'd out the PosterLockout.txt file and NB startup went to 12s. I had about 5,800 lines in that file (accumulated over 5 or so years and the file size was about 206K). Just for fun I restored the file, closed NB and restarted it and it again took 1m 36s. I deleted about 1/2 of the records in the file and NB started in 30s.

Not sure what NB is doing with that file that slows down startup and makes it use 25% of the CPU but I guess it's time time I start updating that list anyway.

Good you found it.

Poster lockouts are pretty useless these days. The spammers are posting with random "Poster" fields. I'll bet with 5000 of them Newsbin in general ran dog slow. The more poster lockouts you have, the slower it'll run. I wrote a note to think about it. It's got to generate and test 5000 increasingly complicated regular expressions when it's loading the list.

My only observation on this though is what changed in the beta that caused the slowdown on startup? Your comment on it causing NB to run slower in general is interesting and I'll be curious to see if the slowdown I've had when working with filters improves including the problems I've had with some (not all) applications freezing when I open and then quit from filters.

Thanks
