watch list start

Postby Smoker » Mon Oct 07, 2013 6:56 pm

I have searched and checked the help without success.

I have even went through all the panels, tabs, options etc and can not find anything useful to help me get even started with watch lists.

Can someone please point me to something to get started ?

They really only work with headers at the moment. You can make them work with search but, it's not intuitive yet.

1 - Make a new watch item. Lets call it "Booty"

2 - Right click "Properties"

3 - Set a search string in the "Search For" field. "Big booty" or "Big booty S12"

4 - Set the min and max size filters (or not, it's optional).

5 - If you know what group your files appear in, select the "group of groups" on the "Look in Groups" drop down

6 - Set whether you want them to download automatically or just queue up.

Click OK.

At this point you have a watch list set up to find "big booty" or "Big Booty" from season 12. Now when you download headers, anything that matches. The size, subject and even the poster if you like specific posters, are fed into a virtual group called "Booty". You can load this group like a regular group. Filter, delete or anything else you'd normally do in a group.

You can feed the group using the right click "Rescan Topic" command. This will make it search through your existing groups and feed any matches into the "Booty" watch. By default it only looks back in time 30 days. If you're using a "group of groups" you can make it search all 3000 days or however many days of headers you have stored.

Then when it's done scanning, it'll show the number of hits. You can then close the window and open "Booty" to see what it collected.

I don't typically even load some groups any more. I just let the watch lists collect stuff for me and look in my watch topics.

I tried what you mentioned

How do you open it ? I right clicked and no options. Even double clicked and it opens a search tab but is empty.

Where are you right clicking? I right click "Booty" and get a 10 item menu. Look at the groups tab. You're right clicking on the item under "Watch Topics".

It sounds like you didn't get any hits from your scan.

I too get a 10 item menu.
I have a watch list item under the Watch_Topics group.
Right clicking and selecting "Rescan Topic" pops open a "Watch Scan List" window.
Start Scan and I get
Records: 772000
Matches: 173
I click on OK

That is when I don't know where the rescan items are.

So, you click "OK" in rescan, then right click "booty" and select "Show all Posts".

Can I get a little help with setting up the matches ?

Instead of separate watch lists for each I was trying something like

(wordONE wordTWO)|(wordTHREE wordFOUR)|(wordFIVE wordSIX)

I found that somewhere else in the forums but it's not work as I thought it would.

It's not clear what you're trying to accomplish with your search string.

It looks like:

"W1 and W2 or W3 and W4 or W5 and W6"

If that's what you want, they way you show it here should work. You can test these strings in the watch list setting and by using them in the "Find" field of a post list.

Is what I am trying to do

for example I want to search "bing crosby" and "the beatles" and "elvis presley"
but I don't want separate watch lists.

EDIT: Actually I meant "bing crosby" or "the beatles" or "elvis presley"

Hey Smoker - I've been struggling with this too. I don't know anything about search strings, so this has all been trial and error. Today I loaded headers from alt.binaries.boneless. There are a few topics with multiple headers and I chose 2 words to search - gizmo and DEH - and wanted to create a watchlist which found both sets of headers. The search string "gizmo|DEH" [with or without the quotations] works. Why I was having trouble is that spaces, either before or after the pipe make the search string fail. Don't know how to build on this to include multiple words (as ANDs) on either side of the pipe, but this is a start.

Let me know if you have any success.

I see it's not working... You can test it in the "Test Search" field.

I entered this:

"(big tits)|(Monster cock)"

Then:

"monster cock" in the test expression and it didn't take but, it should have.

"big tits monster cock" does match. It's like the OR is ignored.

I'll check it out.

"Test Expression" is there to let you test things.

| as OR does work but, apparently the parens mess it up.

"big|tits|monster|cock" for example works like you'd expect.

Could you please add another feature to the watch list? Something like
"Only download from this watchlist once every X number of days"?

It's working brilliantly, the problem is I'm getting multiple copies of something posted by more than one person. :)

I understand that issue too.

Will this solution resolve that though ?

What I would like is to be able to change the default rescan days from 30 to something else.

I don't see why not. If I like to download "the news" every day then I don't need to check the box. But if I only want to download "the weather" on Thursdays, then if I enable the search on Thursday and set it for every 7 days, shouldn't that take care of it?

For Pete's sake, I can't even figure out how to do that.

When you announce a new feature in a beta, how about adding at least a clue as to where it is in the GUI? Which menu, at least. My vision is limited and can't handle a detailed search of submenus, etc. I need a simple goto direction.

Everything in Newsbin is done with the right click menu.

Look in the groups tab where it says "Watch Topics" right click and "New Watch".

Any word on this suggestion for NB ?
Or have you come up with an alternative solution ?

Thanks

6.50 is being polished for release. This is new devel meaning it's going to have to wait till 6.50 is out.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

Suppose I was hoping for an alternative solution in the mean time.

As always a more focused search will probably work better.

"full 720p filename"

instead of just:

"filename" would reduce the number of dups. If you have a posting group you like, add their name to the watch.
