possible bug in 6.5 (very minor)

I can't permanently clear the downloaded headers in a group.

I only am using one group on this PC. I've set it to update headers every 30 min.

I can delete all headers, but the next time I download new headers, about half of them come back. Some from as long as 3 days ago. This wasn't a problem with Newsbin from 2(3) months ago.

Yes, I set it to hide old headers. The headers are highlited 'green - no yellow triangles.

I've set it back to - filter [age] 1 day to keep out the older ones

If I push things and download, delete 3 or 4 times in 10 min, I can trim the "ghost" headers down to about 9. Some were dated 5 hours ago, and I know they were deleted. Given time, older ones re-appear, so I end up with over 100 old ones on auto update.

------------------------
I use 'easy as my master and 'astra as the slave (or whatever you call the ones you don't download headers for).

I notice ALL the ghost headers have 'astra in the message-id. Again, under that server, I have the download headers left unchecked
------------------------

It's not important, but it's annoying. Right now, I sort by date, but out of habit, I look thru all the ghosts.
I just want the 'dead to stay dead. 'Not be greeted with 155 headers I have to go thru to make sure I don't miss one new post.

Just wanted you to know in case someone else has the same problem. Maybe it was the "Free Registry Tune-up" I clicked on ... JK.

Thanks for making such a great product. Please don't make it easier Usenet doesn't need to be scrutinized by governments like P2P is.

In the server options, set the "overlap" to 1. Basically you're trying to reduce how much Newsbin overlaps one header download with the last one.

Of course, adjusting the header overlap worked. THANKS!

I guess you've taken me to my word and NOT made it easier. That's one tweak I'd have NEVER figured out.

Again, thank you.

I spoke too soon.

It's still displaying headers I deleted 7 hours ago( but no longer showing from 3 days ago, thank you). I delete them again and they just come back. Not duplicates, they've got the same time stamp. There seems to now be a 3 to 7 hour gap between new posts and the ghost posts... so it's easier to ignore the ghosts.

FYI, I've set 'easy* as my master and "no header download" for my 3 other servers. And yes, I shut down and restarted to be sure the changes took effect.

Think it would help to bump the 'header overlap? Or else is there some folder I can flush?

I see the same issue. I have tried bumping the overlap and have completely deleted the data folder to no avail.

I'll see if I can repro. The lower the overlap, the less likely you are to see things re-appear. Assuming nothing else is going on.

Easy way to see if it's overlap.

1 - Delete the files.

2 - Wait 20 seconds.

3 - Exit Newsbin.

4 - Start Newsbin then load the group

If they show back up, either 20 seconds wasn't enough, or the delete isn't happening. If you download headers from multiple server, you can see come interactions there too.

Quade,

Thanks for checking into this. I can send you the groups in my GoG where it happens consistently if that will help. This issue is the only thing keeping me from making the jump to the new version.

I've tested it for about three hours now

Delete, shut down, wait 20, start... They're GONE!!! The posts I deleted are GONE.

Now it appears only the files I deleted AFTER the shutdown are reappearing. Again, delete, update, they come back.

I made sure only one server is downloading headers.

Is there a setting to tweak so I don't have to shut down to clear reviewed posts?

Thanks for the help.

Mine still come back. Maybe I have a different issue.

24 hours later and I can't repeat the problem. I'm only downloading headers from one server (but posts showed up complete sooner with 4 servers).

I guess after shutting it down a few times I cleaned out 'something. So the problem was me. or tweaking the overlap.

Thanks!!!
