'Unexpected Error' when downloading from a Newsbin Search

Postby EviLFazZ » Mon Mar 04, 2013 5:00 pm

So... not always... but a few times now... I do a Newsbin Search, I click on an something I want and it says:

Image

The URL calls MS Internet Explorer to open, instead of my default browser which is Google Chrome, though my default browser is opened when using any of the Help options in Newsbin :?

Back to the error itself, the selected file is not also not added to the download queue, but is marked as downloaded. I then try Bypass filters, but that gives the same Unexpected Error message :?

The only change I've made lately is I'm using different servers now (recently moved to AstraWeb) and I'm wondering if that it causing some issues, as I'm sure I haven't set it up correctly and can't get it to work in SSL mode (keeps failing) and NNTP error with the News server, but disabled it and kept to US and EU only, which doesn't give errors now, but still the above 'Unexpected Error' on random search selections :?

I've also noticed when selecting some files using Newsbin Search, the actual file placed in the queue, isn't the same file I selected at all and isn't even closely related to the original file I chose. Never seen this problem before and will try to give a better example the next time I see it and what maybe going wrong :?:

When this happens again, click on the Logging tab and tell me what messages are there.

Newsbin uses IE internally for the MOTD and for any custom messages from the search server, that's why IE pops up.

About the queued files being different from what you searched for, did you queue the files right after performing the search or was it after some amount of time? We just switched over servers this morning so if you searched for something but didn't queue it for a few minutes, it's possible that the server got swapped out during that time. This happens so infrequently and impacts so few people that I don't even announce it. It only happens a few times a year when I have to perform maintenance to the production server.

If it happens again, PM me the exact post that you tried to queue for download, or use our technical support form.

Thanks Dexter and will certainly try to grab a copy of the log tab next time it happens.

Personally, I'd like to suggest you removing the usage of iE within Newsbin, but I guess it does the job, but it's just a bit odd that it calls up iE (the full browser) from the Newsbin URL rather than the systems chosen default browser. I've pretty much blocked iE from doing anything accept auto update via the OS updates only and it only gets used for when I do page testing for website development

Bang on Dexter, I didn't go through the searches I made on five of the search tabs I opened until about 3 hours after I created them, so what you've detailed makes complete sense and is now just my loss of search allowances. Will keep this in mind for my future searches, thanks again :)
